For a new Shopify checkout UI extension, choose Shopify’s Polaris web-component model and follow the current API-version guidance; Shopify recommends Preact for extensions on API version 2025-10 and later. React-based UI components remain relevant when maintaining an extension pinned to an older version, but Shopify identifies 2025-07 as the last API version that supports them.
Moving an existing extension is more than replacing JSX tags. You may need to change dependencies, the entry point, hooks, TypeScript settings, metafield access, and component markup, then test the extension in Shopify’s hosted environment.
The short answer: use web components for new extensions
Shopify’s current checkout-extension direction is Polaris web components. API version 2025-10 and later use web components by default, and Shopify recommends Preact as the rendering approach for UI extensions on those versions. A JavaScript implementation is also documented, so “web components versus React” is not strictly a choice between two mandatory libraries: the platform supplies custom elements, while you choose whether to render them with Preact or use JavaScript directly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
React is a legacy implementation path for checkout UI extensions. Shopify’s versioned component reference calls 2025-07 the last API version supporting React-based UI components. That makes React a maintenance option for an extension that must remain on that version, not a safe starting point for new work on a later API version.

What changed in Shopify’s support timeline
API version 2025-07: final React-supported version
If an extension is pinned to 2025-07, Shopify’s React component wrappers and React extension entry point are still the relevant model. This can be the least disruptive choice while you plan an upgrade, but it carries the maintenance burden of an older API version. Verify the currently supported versions before committing to a long-lived pin because Shopify changes version support and migration guidance over time.
API version 2025-10 and later: web components by default
Shopify’s migration guidance says extensions upgrading from versions earlier than 2025-10 must adopt Polaris web components. The component reference uses custom elements such as <s-checkbox> and <s-button> rather than React wrapper components. Shopify recommends Preact for UI extensions on these versions, but the documented JavaScript route can be appropriate for a small extension or a team that does not need a component framework.
API version 2026-04: metafield API change
Shopify’s guide calls out a version-specific change for 2026-04: the deprecated metafields property is replaced by shopify.appMetafields. Treat this as an API migration, not a cosmetic rename. Search every read and write, update types and tests, and confirm that the target exposes the metafield data your extension expects.
| API version or range | Authoring model Shopify documents | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| 2025-07 | React-based UI components are supported | Useful for maintaining an existing React extension pinned to this version |
| 2025-10 and later | Polaris web components are the default; Preact is recommended | New work should use custom elements and the current extension APIs |
| 2026-04 | Web-component model with the updated metafield property | Replace deprecated metafields usage with shopify.appMetafields where applicable |
How the two component models differ
React-based checkout components
The older model imports Shopify’s React extension package, uses React component wrappers, and starts the extension through a React-specific entry point such as reactExtension. State, effects, and event handling follow React conventions, which can be convenient for a codebase already built around React.
Those wrappers do not give React unrestricted control over checkout. Shopify still controls the host surface, supported targets, component behavior, and security boundary. React code runs inside the extension runtime rather than inside the merchant’s checkout DOM.
Polaris web components
The newer model renders Shopify custom elements. A checkbox that was previously represented by a React wrapper becomes an element such as <s-checkbox>; a button uses <s-button>. Properties, attributes, events, and available slots follow the component reference for the API version and target you select.

Because these are platform-provided elements, Shopify owns their semantics, visual system, keyboard behavior, and supported customization surface. You can compose the elements and provide content, but you cannot replace their internal implementation or apply arbitrary CSS to force a different appearance.

Preact and the JavaScript route
Preact provides a familiar component-and-state model with a smaller runtime footprint than full React, which is why Shopify recommends it for the newer UI-extension model. It is not a drop-in React compatibility promise: imports, rendering, hooks, and event details still need review.
For a small extension, plain JavaScript can avoid a framework migration. Shopify’s guidance shows that simple reads and writes may use the global shopify object instead of convenience hooks. That can reduce dependencies, but you must follow the API reference for the specific target and version rather than assuming every React hook has a direct global replacement.
| Decision axis | React-based components | Polaris web components with Preact or JavaScript |
|---|---|---|
| Version support | 2025-07 is the last API version Shopify documents as supporting React-based UI components. | Default from API version 2025-10 onward, with Preact recommended for UI extensions. |
| Component authoring | Shopify React wrappers and a React extension entry point. | Shopify custom elements such as <s-checkbox> and <s-button>. |
| Best fit | Maintaining an existing extension that remains on the final React-supported version. | New extensions and upgrades to current API versions. |
| Migration impact | No immediate conversion if the extension remains on its existing supported version. | May require dependency, entry-point, hook, TypeScript, markup, metafield, and API updates. |
| Styling boundary | Runs within Shopify’s checkout-extension constraints. | Runs within the same constraints; custom CSS cannot override component internals. |
| Performance and accessibility evidence | Shopify describes the newer model as offering benefits, but the reviewed material contains no controlled head-to-head benchmark. | Shopify’s performance and accessibility statements are vendor descriptions, not independent comparative measurements. |
Limits that apply to both approaches
Changing the rendering model does not turn a checkout extension into a general-purpose web application. Shopify states that extensions:
- cannot override the CSS of Shopify UI components;
- cannot access the real checkout DOM;
- cannot render arbitrary HTML; and
- can render the custom HTML elements that Shopify provides.
Targets determine where the extension appears and which APIs it receives. Select the target first, then check its current documentation before choosing hooks, properties, or event handlers. A component that works in one target is not automatically available in another.

How to migrate a React checkout extension
Shopify describes the upgrade as a set of coordinated changes. Use a branch, review the generated or manual edits, and run the extension locally before publishing.
- Record the current state. Write down the extension’s API version, target, dependencies, entry point, hooks, component imports, metafield calls, and any assumptions about checkout data. Inventorying these uses prevents a markup-only migration from leaving an old API call behind.
- Choose the destination API version. Move to the latest supported version documented for your project rather than selecting a version solely because an old example uses it. If the destination is 2025-10 or later, plan for Polaris web components. If it is 2026-04, include the metafield property change in the same work item.
- Update extension dependencies and the entry point. Remove React-only extension packages when they are no longer needed, add the packages required by the chosen Preact or JavaScript setup, and replace the React-specific entry point. Check the resulting dependency tree for duplicate or incompatible versions instead of assuming the package manager resolved the correct runtime.
- Adjust TypeScript configuration. If the extension uses TypeScript, update JSX or custom-element type declarations as required by the new setup. Resolve errors for element names, properties, and event types deliberately; suppressing them can hide a spelling error or an API that the selected target does not provide.
- Convert component markup. Replace React wrappers with the corresponding Shopify custom elements. For example, a wrapper-based checkbox becomes
<s-checkbox>, and a wrapper-based button becomes<s-button>. Recheck boolean attributes, labels, slots, disabled state, and event listeners against the component reference because JSX property syntax does not always map one-for-one to custom-element attributes. - Port state and hooks. Recreate state management with Preact hooks if you choose Preact, or with the documented JavaScript APIs if you do not use a framework. Shopify notes that simple read/write operations may use the global
shopifyobject instead of convenience hooks. Review every hook for changed names, return values, asynchronous behavior, and target availability. - Update metafield access. For API versions that include the 2026-04 change, replace deprecated
metafieldsreferences withshopify.appMetafieldswhere the new API applies. Update mock data, TypeScript types, null handling, and write operations together so the extension does not render successfully while silently reading an empty value. - Review extension APIs and permissions. Compare every API call with the destination version and target documentation. A successful build does not prove that the target grants the same capability or that a permission is still named the same way.
- Run locally and inspect real flows. Exercise loading, empty data, validation errors, network failures, keyboard navigation, and the checkout states in which the extension appears. Test the actual target rather than relying only on a component story or isolated browser page.
- Conduct code review before publishing. Shopify recommends reviewing migration changes and testing the upgraded output locally. Have another developer check dependency removals, event wiring, API-version changes, metafield behavior, and the absence of forbidden DOM or CSS assumptions.
Migration example: what changes conceptually
In a React extension, the component tree commonly imports Shopify wrappers and is returned from a React extension registration function. In the newer model, the tree contains Shopify custom elements and is rendered through the Preact or JavaScript setup selected for the extension.
The important difference is not the tag spelling alone. A React prop such as a boolean or callback may become a custom-element attribute or DOM event; a hook that supplied checkout data may be replaced by a different API; and a property available before 2026-04 may have a new name. Treat each conversion as an API review with a visible test, not as a search-and-replace exercise.

You are starting a new checkout extension
Use the current supported API version, Polaris web components, and Preact unless your extension is simple enough for the documented JavaScript route. This avoids creating a new dependency on the final React-supported version and aligns the implementation with Shopify’s current examples and migration direction.
You maintain a stable extension on 2025-07
React can remain a defensible short-term maintenance choice while you schedule an upgrade. Pinning does not remove the need to monitor Shopify’s support policy, and new features may be documented primarily for the web-component model. Establish a migration branch early if the extension is business-critical.
You have a large React codebase
Separate the migration into platform changes and feature changes. First make the API-version, dependency, entry-point, markup, hooks, and metafield updates with behavior unchanged. Then refactor shared state or visual composition. This makes regressions easier to isolate and lets reviewers distinguish Shopify compatibility work from unrelated redesign.

You need deep visual customization
Neither model is a solution for overriding Shopify’s checkout component CSS or manipulating the real checkout DOM. Confirm that the required experience can be expressed with Shopify’s supplied elements and extension targets before investing in a framework migration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPerformance and accessibility: what can and cannot be claimed
Shopify describes later web components as native elements with built-in accessibility and better performance. Those statements explain the platform’s design direction, but the available material does not provide a controlled React-versus-web-components benchmark, test hardware, or measured accessibility score. Do not promise a specific load-time reduction or accessibility percentage.
In practice, evaluate the things your extension controls: bundle size, unnecessary re-renders, data-fetch timing, keyboard flow, focus management, labels, error messaging, and behavior under slow network conditions. Use Shopify’s component semantics and test the rendered extension in checkout rather than treating a browser benchmark of an isolated element as proof of merchant-facing performance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common migration failures and fixes
React imports fail after the version bump
Check that the extension no longer imports React-only wrappers or the React registration function. Replace the entry point and component imports together, then remove stale dependencies. A partial conversion often produces a build that contains incompatible packages.
The custom element renders but does not respond
Verify the element name, event name, boolean-attribute syntax, and target support against the destination API reference. React callback props are not automatically DOM event listeners.
TypeScript rejects a valid-looking element
Confirm that the project’s JSX and custom-element declarations match the Preact or JavaScript setup. Fix the type definition or property name rather than adding a broad suppression; the compiler may be identifying an API-version mismatch.

Data is empty after migration
Inspect the hook or global shopify call, target permissions, and asynchronous loading path. For 2026-04 work, check that all deprecated metafields references were replaced with shopify.appMetafields where required.
Styles look different from the old extension
Do not attempt to override Shopify component CSS. Use supported properties, slots, layout elements, and the extension’s documented customization points. If the desired appearance is outside that boundary, the target may not support the design.
The extension never appears in checkout
Confirm the selected target, the merchant’s plan, activation and placement settings, and whether the target is available in the chosen API version. Information, shipping, and payment-step checkout extensions require Shopify Plus.
Practical checklist before publishing
- Destination API version is the latest supported version for the project.
- New work uses Polaris custom elements; React is retained only with an explicit legacy-version decision.
- Entry point and dependencies match the selected Preact or JavaScript setup.
- Every React wrapper has a reviewed custom-element equivalent.
- Hooks, global
shopifyoperations, permissions, and target APIs have been checked. - 2026-04 metafield changes are covered where that version is used.
- TypeScript declarations and event handling compile without broad suppressions.
- Local tests cover loading, errors, keyboard use, and the real checkout target.
- Unsupported CSS, checkout-DOM access, and arbitrary HTML assumptions have been removed.
- A second developer has reviewed the migration before publication.
How Shopify’s migration documentation is organized
Shopify reported more than 60 component-specific migration pages on May 13, 2026, covering components such as Button, Checkbox, TextField, Banner, and View. That figure counts guide pages; it is not a count of supported components, extensions, adoption, or performance improvements. Use the page for each component in your extension alongside the API-version and target documentation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Shopify still support React checkout extensions?
Shopify documents API version 2025-07 as the last version supporting React-based UI components. React is therefore a legacy maintenance path, not the recommended foundation for a new extension on 2025-10 or later.
Can I use plain JavaScript instead of Preact when migrating?
Yes. Shopify’s newer guidance documents a JavaScript route as well as the recommended Preact approach. Choose based on the extension’s state and rendering needs, then use the APIs documented for its target and API version.
Can a web-component checkout extension use custom CSS or the checkout DOM?
No. Shopify says extensions cannot override UI-component CSS, access the real checkout DOM, or render arbitrary HTML. They can compose Shopify-provided custom elements within the supported extension surface.
Are checkout extensions on every Shopify plan?
Checkout extensions on the information, shipping, and payment steps are available only to Shopify Plus stores. Other targets and capabilities depend on the extension target and current platform documentation.
