You can assemble a finance summary from Shopify Admin GraphQL data, but the official documentation does not establish enough detail to reproduce every native Finance Summary card exactly. Treat the result as a reconstruction inspired by Shopify’s report unless you verify each card’s formulas, filters, date attribution, and field mappings independently.
What the native Finance Summary includes
Shopify describes its Finance Summary as an overview for a selected time frame, organized into cards for sales, payments, gift cards, tips, and gross profit. The cards include visualizations and links to related reports for more detail. Shopify’s Finance Summary overview identifies these categories, but does not provide a complete, exact GraphQL formula for each card.
Preserve the gross-profit cost distinction
The Gross profit breakdown separates net sales with cost recorded from net sales without cost recorded. Those two groups together make up total net sales for the selected range. Keep them as separate categories in your data model and display; a sale without recorded cost is not evidence of zero cost.

Order transactions expose amounts in both shop currency and buyer presentment currency. Each amount is paired with a currency code, so decide which basis the summary uses and label it clearly. Do not add values with different currency codes as if they shared the same unit.

Shopify’s 2026-04 OrderTransaction reference shows fields including transaction kind and status, gateway, fees, settlement currency, and unsettled amounts. These fields can inform a payment-oriented view, but the example query does not establish that those fields alone reproduce the native Payments card.
Build payment totals around transaction state
Do not treat every transaction record as completed money movement. Inspect its kind and status, and decide explicitly which states your displayed measure includes. Retain the gateway, fees, settlement currency, and total unsettled amount where they are relevant to the view, while keeping their meaning distinct from a completed payment total.

Represent refunds separately from returned money
A refund can include multiple components: refunded line items, shipping, taxes, duties, and additional fees. Shopify also exposes refund amounts in shop and presentment currencies, so apply the same currency discipline used for transactions.

Shopify’s Refund reference says the associated OrderTransaction objects handle processing and their status should be checked. Keep the refund record and the transaction outcome as separate facts; do not report a created or pending refund as settled cash returned.

Shape GraphQL requests for a bounded, maintainable report
Pin a supported Admin GraphQL API version in the endpoint URL. Shopify versions this API and calculates query cost in points; fields contribute to cost, and the total reflects the maximum possible cost of the selected fields. A broad query is not a substitute for a careful data plan.
- Request only fields needed for the measures and distinctions your summary actually displays.
- Paginate connections rather than assuming a single unbounded request will retrieve every record.
- Account for query complexity and calculated cost when choosing the query shape.
- Store currency codes, transaction states, refund components, and cost-recording status with the values they qualify.

What a faithful reconstruction can—and cannot—claim
The documented card names and API examples provide a useful starting point for a custom summary, not proof of parity with Shopify’s built-in report. The cited official materials do not settle every card’s exact formula, filters, date attribution, or GraphQL field mapping. Name your measures according to what your implementation actually calculates, and claim a line-by-line match only after validating each line against the native report.
