Choose the Shokz OpenRun if you prioritize rain resistance, the lightest frame and a lower price. Choose the OpenRun Pro 2 if you want up to four more hours of battery life, newer dual-driver sound, app-based EQ controls and a more premium listening experience. The Pro 2 is not an across-the-board upgrade: its IP55 water rating is weaker than OpenRun’s IP67 rating, and its standard frame is heavier.
Both are open-ear headphones designed to let you hear your surroundings while listening. The right choice depends less on a universal “better” rating than on your weather exposure, listening duration, sound preferences and budget.

What both headphones have in common
OpenRun and OpenRun Pro 2 are open-ear headphones rather than conventional in-ear buds. Their transducers sit near the cheekbones and send sound without sealing the ear canal. Tom’s Guide described this arrangement as allowing listeners to stay aware of their surroundings during workouts. You can therefore hear traffic, other runners, announcements or conversations more readily than with a sealed earbud, although louder surroundings will also compete with your music.
#1 Best Overall
- Unparalleled Audio and Premium sound - Dual drivers combine the clear highs of Bone Conduction Tech with the deep bass of Air Conduction Tech for 12 hours of powerful, 3D audio.Perfect for musical motivation during workouts and runs.
- Open-Ear Awareness - SHOKZ's signature open-ear design helps you power through your workouts while keeping you safely aware of your surroundings. Leak-free listening ensures your audio remains for your ears only
- Secure Stable, Lightweight Fit - The weight-optimized design of this unibody frame integrates a Ni-Ti alloy memory wire and ergonomic ear hooks. The result is a secure, comfortable fit that defies slips and shift even during gym sessions or cycling.
- Dedicated EQ Modes - Customize your audio experience with our dedicated EQ modes on the Shokz App. Enjoy pure bone conduction sound with the newly launched Classic Mode, or boost your audio in noisy environments with Volume Boost Mode.
- Crystal-Clear Calls - Strategically positioned dual wind-resistant microphones and an AI noise reduction algorithm filter out 96.5% of background noise, including wind at speeds of up to 15 miles per hour.
That design makes both models suitable for running, walking, cycling on appropriate routes, commuting and calls where environmental awareness matters. It also means the listening experience is different from an in-ear headphone: bass impact, maximum loudness and isolation depend heavily on your surroundings and how the frame sits on your head.
Water resistance: the most important practical difference
OpenRun’s IP67 rating
OpenRun carries an IP67 rating. In Shokz’s comparison guidance, that is the model associated with “extreme weather” and being “rinse-safe.” For a runner who regularly trains in heavy rain, sweats heavily or wants to rinse the headset after a workout, IP67 is the stronger choice between these two models.
OpenRun Pro 2’s IP55 rating
OpenRun Pro 2 is rated IP55. That is a different protection level, not an equivalent label with a newer number. The Pro 2 can still suit ordinary workouts and damp conditions, but it gives you less margin for the wettest use than OpenRun. Do not select it on the assumption that its newer electronics automatically make it more water-resistant.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMatch the rating to your routine
- Choose OpenRun for: frequent downpours, very sweaty training, outdoor sessions where you may need to rinse the headset, or any routine in which water protection is a deciding requirement.
- Choose Pro 2 for: mostly dry-gym sessions, commuting and normal outdoor use where its longer battery and sound features matter more than maximum water protection.
- Do not treat IP67 and IP55 as interchangeable. The ratings indicate different protection levels, so evaluate the environments you actually encounter instead of assuming both models are equally suitable for wet training.
Battery life and charging
How much longer does OpenRun Pro 2 last?
OpenRun is rated for up to 8 hours of battery life. OpenRun Pro 2 is rated for up to 12 hours. On the published ratings, the Pro 2 gives you up to four additional hours per charge, a meaningful difference for long runs, a full workday of intermittent listening or travel days when you do not want to carry a charger.
“Up to” is important: actual runtime varies with volume, call use, temperature, wireless connection conditions and battery age. The figures are manufacturer ratings rather than a promise that every listener will reach them.

Quick-charge advantage
Shokz’s Pro 2 specification sheet says a five-minute charge provides about 2.5 hours of music. That is useful when you discover an empty battery just before a workout. Shokz lists quick charging for OpenRun as well, but the supplied OpenRun specifications do not state a comparable time allowance, so you should not assume it matches the Pro 2’s 2.5-hour figure.
Which battery profile fits your schedule?
- If your sessions are normally under an hour and you recharge regularly, OpenRun’s 8-hour rating is usually sufficient.
- If you listen across commuting, work and exercise without a midday charge, the Pro 2’s 12-hour rating reduces charging interruptions.
- If you often forget to charge, the Pro 2’s documented five-minute top-up is the more useful safety net.
Weight, fit and long-session comfort
Shokz comparison material lists OpenRun at approximately 26 g. The standard OpenRun Pro 2 is approximately 30.3 g according to its specification sheet. That makes the Pro 2 about 4.3 g heavier on paper.
The difference is modest, but it can be noticeable when the headset stays on your head for hours or when you are particularly sensitive to pressure behind the ears. OpenRun is the better fit for buyers whose first comfort criterion is minimum weight. Pro 2 buyers accept the additional mass in exchange for its newer driver system, longer battery and software controls.
Both models use an open-ear frame, so fit is not about creating an ear-canal seal. Stability depends on the band position, the shape of your head and whether the frame interferes with glasses, helmets or other gear. Try the headset with the equipment you normally wear rather than judging fit in isolation.
Sound: traditional bone conduction versus Pro 2’s dual-driver system
OpenRun’s simpler presentation
OpenRun uses Shokz’s traditional open-ear bone-conduction approach. Its simpler design is well suited to spoken audio, calls and workout listening when you value awareness and uncomplicated controls over extensive tuning options. Because the ear canal remains open, you should expect more environmental sound than you would get from sealed headphones.

What changes with OpenRun Pro 2
OpenRun Pro 2 combines air conduction and bone conduction in a newer dual-driver arrangement. Shokz positions this as a way to deliver a fuller, more premium sound than the standard OpenRun. It also adds app support and multiple EQ modes reported in Shokz materials, allowing you to adjust the presentation instead of accepting one fixed tuning.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Sounds better” is therefore a preference and use-case judgment, not a universal measurement. Listeners who want richer music and the ability to switch EQ modes have a clear reason to choose Pro 2. If most of your use is podcasts, navigation prompts and occasional calls while running, OpenRun’s simpler system may already meet your needs.
How to decide if the Pro 2’s sound features matter
- List the content you hear most: spoken-word audio places less emphasis on tonal customization than music.
- Consider where you listen. In a noisy street, environmental sound can mask detail on either open-ear model.
- Decide whether you will actually use an app and EQ controls. If you will not change settings, the Pro 2’s software advantage has less value.
- If music quality is a primary reason for buying, favor the Pro 2’s newer dual-driver design; if awareness and simplicity dominate, OpenRun remains the more focused choice.
Features and everyday operation
OpenRun keeps the feature set simpler. That can be an advantage when you want to pair the headset, press play and run without managing sound profiles. Its core use cases are exercise, calls and music while remaining aware of nearby activity.
Pro 2 adds app support and multiple EQ modes. Those controls are most valuable to listeners who move between spoken audio, music and different environments. They also make the Pro 2 feel more like a premium, configurable product rather than a basic training accessory.
Neither model should be evaluated solely on feature count. Extra controls do not compensate for a water rating that does not fit your training, and a lighter frame may matter more than EQ presets if you wear the headset for several hours at a time.

Price and value
Shokz’s 2025 US comparison article presented OpenRun at $129.95 and OpenRun Pro 2 at $179.95, a $50 reference difference. Independent deal coverage indicates that promotions can materially change street prices, so verify the current amount before buying. The figures are not a permanent worldwide price list.
| If the current price gap is… | Value question to ask | Likely better choice |
|---|---|---|
| Close to the $50 reference gap | Will you use the extra four hours, five-minute quick charge, EQ controls or newer sound system? | Pro 2 if at least one of those benefits is central to your routine; otherwise OpenRun. |
| Much smaller because of a sale | Does the discounted Pro 2 still meet your weather and weight requirements? | Pro 2 becomes easier to justify, provided IP55 is adequate. |
| Much larger than the reference gap | Are premium sound and battery features worth the added cost when OpenRun already covers your exercise needs? | OpenRun for budget-focused buyers. |
Check that you are comparing the same region, standard or Mini fit, color and warranty terms. A temporary promotion can reverse the apparent value calculation, but it does not change the water-resistance or weight differences.

Podcasts, calls and basic workout audio
Buy OpenRun when you want a straightforward headset for spoken audio and calls and do not need app-based tuning. Its lower reference price, lower weight and stronger water rating cover the practical priorities of many runners.
Very weight-sensitive users
Buy OpenRun if every gram matters. The approximately 26 g comparison weight is lower than the Pro 2 standard model’s approximately 30.3 g specification.
Users who want the newest premium model
Buy OpenRun Pro 2 if you are willing to accept the weaker IP55 rating and extra weight in return for longer battery life, newer sound hardware and app/EQ customization.
A practical buying checklist
- Mark your wettest use case. If heavy rain, very sweaty sessions or rinsing is routine, start with OpenRun because of IP67. If your use is mainly dry, continue comparing the other factors.
- Estimate your longest listening day. Choose OpenRun for sessions comfortably covered by its up-to-8-hour rating; choose Pro 2 when up to 12 hours or the documented five-minute quick charge will prevent inconvenient charging.
- Set a weight priority. At approximately 26 g, OpenRun is the lighter option. Pro 2 is approximately 30.3 g in the standard version.
- Decide whether sound customization is worth paying for. Pro 2 adds dual-driver hardware, app support and multiple EQ modes. OpenRun is the simpler bone-conduction design.
- Check the actual transaction price. Use the $129.95 and $179.95 figures only as the 2025 US comparison reference. Confirm today’s regional price, promotion, stock and fit size.
- Buy for the environment, not the headline. An advertised “premium” upgrade is a poor fit if its IP55 rating does not suit your weather, while a cheaper OpenRun is unnecessary if you will regularly exceed eight hours and want EQ control.
Care and use considerations
- Keep the water rating in context when deciding where to train; IP67 and IP55 are different protection levels.
- Use the model’s charging guidance and avoid judging battery life solely from the “up to” number.
- Wear the frame with your usual glasses, helmet or other headgear before committing to a long session.
- Remember that open-ear listening preserves awareness but does not isolate you from surrounding noise; maintain appropriate awareness around traffic and other hazards.
- If you choose Pro 2 for EQ features, set profiles for your common listening types rather than changing settings constantly during a workout.
Verdict
For most runners who want a dependable, light and weather-ready headset, Shokz OpenRun is the safer buy. Its IP67 rating, approximately 26 g weight and lower $129.95 reference price address the practical demands of outdoor exercise.
Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 is worth the extra money when its specific upgrades matter: up to 12 hours of battery life, about 2.5 hours of music from a five-minute charge, a newer dual-driver sound system and app/EQ customization. Accept the approximately 30.3 g frame and IP55 rating as part of that trade-off. Neither model wins every category; choose the one that matches your weather, schedule and listening priorities.
