Shokz’s published specifications give OpenFit Air 2 a lighter listed weight, longer rated battery life, pressure-sensitive controls, Bluetooth 6.1 and a higher earbud resistance rating than OpenFit Air. Whether those upgrades justify the price depends on your local price and which features matter to you; the specifications do not establish that Air 2 sounds or feels better in real-world use.

#1 Best Overall
- Even lighter. All-day comfort - Just 7.2g. That's it. OpenFit Air 2 is 17.2% lighter than the previous generation. Made with soft, skin-friendly materials, it feels gentle on the ears even during extended wear. The open-ear design minimizes ear canal pressure and heat buildup, delivering a light, breathable fit. From HIIT sessions to dog walks to back-to-back calls, they stay secure and comfortable, so you stay focused.
- Firm frame. Flexible fit - Built from 0.75mm Ni-Ti alloy, the frame holds firm and lasts. The ultra-narrow pod sits naturally over the ear, while the ergonomic ear-hook adapts to the shape of your ear — easing pressure points and keeping everything secure, even during intense workouts.
- Pocket-sized. Effortless style - 10.5% smaller, 17.6% lighter, and sleeker than the previous generation. Easy to carry, easy to style. The charging case slips into any pocket — jeans, blazer, bag — without adding bulk.
- Hear your world. And your music - Shokz's signature open-ear design helps you stay aware of your surroundings — whether you're camping, jogging, or hiking. Plus, DirectPitch Technology keeps your audio and calls private, while minimising sound leakage so those around you stay undisturbed.
- Bold, booming sound - Shokz's patented Bassphere driver packs powerful sound into a compact unit. The dual-driver system, with output equivalent to a custom 16 mm driver, delivers rich, impactful bass and a full, expansive soundstage. Choose from 4 preset EQs or build your own with 2 custom modes — tuned exactly how you like it.
A different audio feature set
Shokz names Bassphere and OpenBass 2.0 alongside DirectPitch for Air 2. Its UK listing describes OpenFit Air with DirectPitch and OpenBass Air. The feature names indicate a changed audio system, but the cited product pages do not provide independent listening comparisons that show Air 2 sounds better.
Pressure-sensitive buttons instead of touch controls
OpenFit Air uses touch controls; Air 2 uses pressure-sensitive buttons. This is a practical interface change if you prefer a button press to touch input. The listings do not establish that one control style works better for every user.

Bluetooth 6.1 and updated resistance ratings
Shokz lists Bluetooth 6.1 for Air 2 and Bluetooth 5.2 for OpenFit Air. The version difference is clear, but it does not by itself prove a noticeable benefit for a particular phone or listening setup.
The earbuds move from IP54 on OpenFit Air to IP55 on Air 2. Shokz Canada separately lists the Air 2 case as IP54 and describes the OpenFit Air case as not waterproof. These are distinct ratings for earbuds and case; neither earbud rating means the product can be submerged. Details appear on Shokz’s UK product listing and the Canada listing above.

Which model should you choose?
Choose OpenFit Air 2 if its upgrades matter to you
- You want the lower listed earbud weight or longer manufacturer-rated listening time.
- You prefer pressure-sensitive buttons to touch controls.
- You value the newer listed Bluetooth version or the higher earbud resistance rating.
- Your local price difference is acceptable for those specification changes.
OpenFit Air may be enough if the price is better
OpenFit Air remains a reasonable option if its controls, rated battery life and resistance rating suit your needs and it costs less where you shop. Compare current local listings rather than relying on the US price difference: Shokz’s Canada page lists the two models at the same price.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the published comparison cannot tell you
The cited Shokz pages do not provide independent listening, fit, microphone, battery-runtime or durability tests. Shokz’s UK listing reports four noise-cancelling microphones on both models, but that specification alone does not establish call quality. Real-world battery life and comfort are not settled by maximum ratings or listed weight; assess those claims accordingly.
