Shipwreck archaeology combines wide-area remote sensing with close inspection. Sonar and magnetometers can flag seafloor features or buried iron, but a sensor hit is only a target—not proof of a wreck, its identity, or its historical meaning. Divers, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), and photogrammetry then supply the observations, measurements, and context needed to interpret and protect the site.

What shipwreck archaeology is trying to establish

Shipwreck archaeology uses physical remains to understand past vessels, voyages, technologies, and the societies connected to them. The objective is not simply to locate valuable objects. A wreck’s position, construction, cargo, damage pattern, and relationship to the seabed can reveal more than any isolated artifact.

That distinction matters because detection and identification are different stages. A sonar image may show an object that resembles a hull. A magnetometer may register a strong iron-related anomaly. Neither result, by itself, proves that the target is a particular ship or even that it is cultural material. Archaeologists combine sensor data with direct observation, measured recording, historical information, and environmental evidence before drawing conclusions.

The investigation sequence: from broad search to site interpretation

  1. Define the search area. Researchers assemble available historical positions, charts, bathymetry, current information, and environmental constraints, then plan survey lines that can be accurately positioned.
  2. Scan efficiently. Towed sonar, multibeam systems, magnetometers, and, where appropriate, sub-bottom profilers cover areas too large for divers to inspect visually.
  3. Rank targets. Teams compare the size, shape, acoustic shadow, magnetic strength, location, and surrounding seabed of each anomaly. A target becomes a candidate for follow-up, not an identified wreck.
  4. Inspect safely. Divers examine accessible sites. ROVs or AUVs extend observation into deeper, colder, darker, or more hazardous water and can stay on task longer than a diver.
  5. Build a spatial record. Photographs, video, measured sketches, sensor positions, and photogrammetric models document where each visible element lies.
  6. Interpret and monitor. Researchers relate the arrangement of remains to vessel construction, site formation, and history, then establish a baseline for detecting erosion, corrosion, biological growth, or human disturbance.

What remote sensors can reveal

Side-scan sonar: an image of the seabed and exposed features

A side-scan sonar sends acoustic pulses to either side of a towfish or vehicle and records the returning sound. Differences in reflected energy produce a two-dimensional image of seabed texture, objects, and acoustic shadows. A wreck that protrudes above the bottom can cast a recognizable shadow, making side-scan sonar valuable for searching large areas.

The output is an acoustic image, not a photograph. Shadow length and intensity depend on the instrument’s geometry, range, seafloor material, and the target’s orientation. A visually striking shape may be a rock, debris, geological outcrop, or modern object. Conversely, a wreck buried completely beneath sediment may not appear in the side-scan view at all. NOAA’s Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary describes side-scan sonar as a way to locate wrecks protruding above the seafloor, not as a standalone identification method.

Multibeam sonar: bathymetric context

Multibeam sonar measures water depth across a swath rather than producing only a side-looking texture image. The resulting bathymetry can show relief, scour, sediment mounds, channels, and hazards. It helps teams understand how a target sits on the seabed and supports accurate site maps.

Bathymetry strengthens interpretation by supplying shape and elevation, but the available NOAA guidance does not establish multibeam data as a method that can identify a wreck on its own. It is most useful when combined with imagery, magnetic data, and close inspection.

Magnetometers: finding iron, including some buried material

A magnetometer measures variations in Earth’s magnetic field. Iron and steel in anchors, engines, fasteners, machinery, or hull components can create a localized magnetic anomaly. When readings are georeferenced, the anomalies can be plotted as a map and compared with sonar and bathymetric targets.

This capability complements side-scan sonar. Magnetic fields can extend beyond the visible seabed, so a magnetometer may indicate ferrous material hidden beneath sediment or obscured by kelp. It does not, however, reveal the object’s complete shape or historical identity. Natural geological sources can also be magnetic, and nonferrous wreck material may produce little or no signal. An anomaly therefore marks a lead that requires confirmation.

Sub-bottom profiling: a general tool for buried targets

NOAA maritime-heritage material lists sub-bottom profiling among the tools used to locate underwater targets. In broad terms, it is used to investigate layers beneath the seabed, but the cited material does not provide operating details or a wreck-specific example. Treat it as part of a wider geophysical survey rather than assuming that every sub-bottom response is an archaeological find.

How divers and underwater vehicles establish what a target is

Diver inspection

Where depth, visibility, currents, entanglement risk, and decompression demands permit, divers can examine a wreck directly. They can photograph construction details, identify materials, read marks, place measuring tapes, and make scaled drawings on underwater slates with pencils. Those observations connect a sensor anomaly to physical evidence and show how fragments relate to one another.

The 130-foot depth mentioned in NOAA’s Stellwagen Bank account is a source-specific example of the depth up to which its discussion describes diver inspection. It is not a universal safe limit. Actual operating depth and bottom time depend on training, breathing gas, decompression procedures, weather, current, visibility, equipment, and local rules.

Remotely operated vehicles (ROVs)

An ROV is tethered to a surface vessel and piloted in real time. It can carry high-definition cameras, lights, positioning systems, and tools for collecting water or sediment samples. NOAA describes ROVs producing still images and video, recording artifact locations, and documenting context.

Because an ROV can work for hours and at depths unsafe for divers, it is valuable when a site is too deep, cold, dark, contaminated, or structurally unstable for human access. The trade-off is that camera views are limited by lighting, turbidity, vehicle position, and the pilot’s line of sight. Video still requires archaeological interpretation; it does not automatically identify an object or explain its history.

Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs)

An AUV carries its own power and follows a preprogrammed mission without a continuous tether. Missions can last hours, days, or weeks, and an AUV can carry sonar, magnetometers, and cameras over larger areas than divers or a surface boat could inspect directly.

AUV data are especially useful for systematic coverage and repeat surveys. The vehicle’s navigation solution, sensor altitude, and environmental conditions affect the quality of the resulting maps. After an AUV flags a target, close visual follow-up—often by ROV or diver—remains necessary to determine what is actually present.

Photogrammetry: turning overlapping images into a measurable record

Photogrammetry uses many overlapping photographs taken along planned routes and from multiple angles. Software matches common features between frames, aligns the camera positions, and generates a photo mosaic and a three-dimensional model.

The model lets researchers measure visible dimensions, inspect the position of timbers and artifacts, and study relationships without repeatedly sending people to the site. NOAA describes photogrammetry as a rapid recording method and a form of digital preservation. A wreck can change through erosion, currents, salinity, corrosion, biological growth, and human disturbance; a georeferenced model provides a baseline against which later surveys can be compared.

Photogrammetry records observed surfaces. It cannot show material hidden under sediment, and poor overlap, suspended particles, uneven lighting, or missing scale and position information can reduce accuracy. The model is evidence for interpretation, not a replacement for the archaeological reasoning that connects the layout to a vessel’s construction, event history, and site formation.

Method comparison: coverage, evidence, and limits

Method Best suited to Evidence produced Main limitation
Side-scan sonar Searching wide areas for exposed seabed features Acoustic image of bottom texture, objects, and shadows Cannot identify a wreck by itself; fully buried material may be missed
Magnetometer Finding iron-bearing material, including some buried or obscured objects Georeferenced magnetic anomalies Anomalies need interpretation and confirmation; geology can also be magnetic
Diver survey Close inspection in accessible water Direct observations, photographs, measured drawings Limited by depth, conditions, and safe working time
ROV Deep or extended close observation Video, still images, positions, and samples Remote imagery still needs archaeological interpretation
AUV Larger preplanned survey areas Sensor maps and camera records Autonomous coverage does not remove the need for close follow-up
Photogrammetry Detailed recording and repeat comparison Photomosaic and three-dimensional model Depends on adequate overlapping imagery and records visible surfaces

How archaeologists move from evidence to interpretation

Interpretation begins with spatial relationships. The position of a boiler relative to frames, the distribution of cargo, a detached bow section, or a trail of scattered objects may indicate how a vessel broke apart and how currents moved material afterward. Those relationships can remain informative even when historical records are incomplete.

Researchers compare the physical record with ship construction practices, material properties, historical charts, archival accounts, and environmental processes. A magnetic anomaly might indicate an iron component, while a nearby sonar shadow supplies shape and a photogrammetric model shows its relationship to other remains. Confidence increases when independent observations agree; uncertainty remains when visibility, burial, corrosion, or incomplete coverage leaves multiple explanations possible.

This is why “find” and “identify” should not be used interchangeably. Sensors locate candidates. Archaeological interpretation explains what the documented evidence can support and clearly marks what remains unknown.

Preservation, monitoring, and the difference between archaeology and salvage

Good practice preserves context. NOAA describes cataloging wreck artifacts in place rather than automatically removing them. An object’s exact position, orientation, association with other materials, and condition can be more informative than the object viewed alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preservation surveys document threats and change. Metal wrecks may receive corrosion surveys; repeated photographic or photogrammetric coverage can reveal scour, sediment movement, biological colonization, structural collapse, or damage from human activity. A baseline lets managers decide whether a site needs protection, restricted access, stabilization, or further study.

In NOAA’s formulation, the “treasure” of marine archaeology is knowledge gained from studying a wreck, not material goods collected from it. Exploration, documentation, and conservation are therefore distinct from salvage operations that remove artifacts.

Legal and ethical boundaries

Rules depend on jurisdiction, ownership, protected status, and the activity proposed. In the United States, NOAA states that disturbing a site or recovering artifacts within a national marine sanctuary without a permit is illegal under the National Marine Sanctuaries Act. That is a specific U.S. sanctuary rule, not a universal law for every ocean or inland waterway.

Before diving, deploying a vehicle, taking samples, or moving an object, teams should check the responsible maritime, heritage, environmental, and sanctuary authorities. A survey plan should preserve original coordinates, sensor settings, imagery, and chain-of-custody records so that observations remain verifiable and the site is not needlessly disturbed.

Common failure modes and how teams reduce them

Assuming a dramatic sonar shape is a wreck

Acoustic shadows can make rocks, debris, and seabed scarps look structural. Teams reduce this error by comparing multiple sonar passes, bathymetry, magnetic data, and direct imagery.

Treating every magnetic anomaly as a ship

Geology and modern metal can produce strong signals. Analysts examine anomaly size, strength, shape, spatial pattern, and relation to the seabed before scheduling confirmation.

Using a model without scale or position control

A visually detailed photogrammetric model can still be unsuitable for measurement if photographs lack sufficient overlap, scale references, or reliable camera positioning. Planned image routes, control points, and documented processing improve its usefulness.

Ignoring what cannot be seen

Side-scan sonar and cameras primarily record exposed surfaces; turbidity, darkness, kelp, corrosion, and burial can hide evidence. Reports should distinguish observed features from inferred or unobserved ones.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disturbing the site while documenting it

Moving artifacts can destroy associations that later interpretation depends on and may violate local law. In-place cataloging and nonintrusive imaging should be the default unless a permitted intervention has a documented conservation purpose.

What a complete site record should contain

  • Survey boundaries, line spacing, vehicle tracks, dates, weather, currents, and water conditions.
  • Sensor types, settings, navigation method, positional accuracy, and processing steps.
  • Original sonar, magnetic, bathymetric, video, still-image, and photogrammetric files.
  • Target coordinates and confidence levels, with detections separated from identifications.
  • Measured plans, object locations, material observations, and condition descriptions.
  • Uncertainty notes explaining burial, visibility, missing coverage, or competing interpretations.
  • A monitoring baseline that can be repeated to assess environmental or human-caused change.

Used together, these records show not only where a possible wreck is, but what was actually observed, how confidently it was interpreted, and how its condition can be protected over time.
