SHIFU: Traffic Masters is an upcoming single-player driving simulator set in a VHS-tinted version of 1990s northern China. The best way to learn it is to treat every job as a handling lesson: begin with cargo, taxi, and bus work, use free-roam to learn intersections and braking distances, then move on to police pursuits and street races. Smooth inputs, route knowledge, and choosing an appropriate workhorse vehicle matter more than outright speed.
What SHIFU: Traffic Masters is
SHIFU: Traffic Masters is a PC game from solo developer Boxy.Poly, planned for Steam. It combines open-world driving with job-based simulation rather than focusing on supercars or conventional racing. The setting recreates everyday motoring in 1990s China through low-poly vehicles and buildings, period traffic, and a VHS-influenced visual style.
The game’s central idea is summed up by its official slogan: “Drive slow cars fast.” You drive modest 1980s and 1990s daily vehicles whose weight, visibility, turning radius, and braking behavior make each assignment feel different. The intended challenge is making an ordinary car, truck, bus, or police vehicle work effectively in a living city.
It is designed as a single-player experience. Steam lists English and Simplified Chinese support, and describes the whole city as available for free-roam between jobs. Traffic, cyclists, pedestrians, changing weather, and changing road conditions all influence how a route feels, so the open world is part of the handling challenge rather than just a backdrop.

How to start: a practical first-session plan
Because the game is not yet released, exact menu labels and control bindings may change. The following sequence uses the activities and systems currently described by Steam and the developer.
- Begin in free-roam. Drive without accepting a demanding job. Identify major intersections, narrow alleys, likely stopping areas, and roads where traffic compresses. Practice turning around and stopping on both wide and tight streets.
- Measure your braking distance. Approach a fixed landmark at a moderate speed, brake smoothly, and note where the vehicle stops. Repeat on a different road or in different weather. This gives you a practical reference before cargo, passengers, or a timetable are involved.
- Take a cargo job first. Truck work teaches weight transfer and the consequences of abrupt control. Keep corrections small and start braking earlier than you would in a light car.
- Try a taxi fare. Taxi work adds passenger comfort to the driving problem. The objective is not simply to arrive quickly; rough driving can cause the passenger to get out, so accelerate, brake, and corner progressively.
- Move to a bus route. A bus makes you account for length, turning clearance, and narrow streets while also following a timetable. Use the route as a lesson in positioning and anticipation.
- Explore the same roads again. The city’s traffic and road conditions change the difficulty. Repeating a familiar route in another condition helps separate route mistakes from handling mistakes.
- Leave police pursuits and street races for later. Both activities demand skills learned in the slower jobs. Pursuits add pressure in traffic, while races reward knowing alleys and shortcuts more than relying on power.
The driving priorities that prevent most failures
Brake before the corner
Heavy loads, passengers, and long vehicles all punish late braking. Reduce speed while the vehicle is still straight, then turn with a light steering input. Braking hard while turning is especially risky when cargo can shift or when a bus needs room to track through a narrow street.
Use smooth, deliberate inputs
The game gives physical consequences to abrupt control. A sharp correction can destabilize a truck, make a taxi passenger leave, or force a bus out of position. Smooth does not mean slow everywhere; it means applying throttle, brake, and steering early enough that the vehicle remains settled.

Street circuits are described as rewarding alley knowledge. Memorize where the road narrows, where traffic enters from side streets, and which turns require a wide approach. A driver who knows the route can often compensate for a modest vehicle without taking unnecessary risks.
Match the vehicle to the assignment
Period workhorse vehicles have different weight and personality. A slower vehicle may be the intended tool for a delivery or route job, while a compact car may be easier to place in tight streets. Do not assume that the vehicle with the highest speed is automatically best for every task.
Use free-roam as a test track
Free-roam lets you practice without a job’s passenger, cargo, pursuit, or timetable consequences. Use it to test U-turns, hill starts, alley exits, and stopping points. Repeat a route in different weather or road conditions so that your technique remains reliable when the environment changes.

Cargo delivery is the clearest introduction to SHIFU’s physical driving. The load is not merely a counter or a delivery marker: the game specifically describes cargo such as watermelons being able to move into traffic when you brake too hard.

A reliable cargo technique
- Scan the road well beyond the next vehicle so you can react early.
- Lift off the accelerator before braking. This reduces the need for a sudden pedal input.
- Brake in a straight line and release pressure progressively as you approach the turn.
- Turn once the truck is slow enough, rather than adding steering corrections while braking heavily.
- Leave extra space behind and beside the truck. Recovering from a shifted load may require more room than the original maneuver.
Do not judge a cargo run solely by completion speed. A route completed slightly later with the load intact teaches more useful control than a fast attempt that creates a hazard. Once you can repeat the route without hard stops, look for cleaner lines and earlier decisions rather than simply driving faster.
Taxi fares: make comfort part of the objective
Taxi work adds a human consequence to your driving. The fare rewards reaching the destination efficiently, but rough handling can make the passenger get out. That changes the ideal style: a smooth, predictable route is more valuable than a sequence of aggressive accelerations and late-braking passes.
How to drive a better fare
- Choose a route with fewer abrupt turns when the time difference is small.
- Accelerate progressively after stops instead of flooring the throttle immediately.
- Brake before intersections and let the car settle before turning.
- Use free-roam to learn pickup and drop-off approaches so you are not searching while the fare is active.
- If traffic slows, preserve control rather than making a risky correction that could end the fare.
Taxi jobs are useful after cargo because they reinforce the same smoothness with a different failure condition. Cargo punishes violent movement of an object; taxi work punishes violent movement of a passenger.

Bus routes: combine vehicle size with a timetable
Bus work asks you to control a large vehicle on narrow streets while meeting a schedule. The bus’s length changes where you must position for a turn, and its size reduces the room available for correcting a mistake.
Positioning for narrow streets
Set up turns early and consider the bus’s rear tracking when the front clears a corner. Avoid stopping so close to a junction that you have no room to adjust. On a narrow road, a slower approach can be faster overall because it prevents a blocked turn or a time-consuming correction.
Managing the timetable
A timetable creates pressure, but rushing into every intersection is counterproductive. Build time by driving consistently between stops, not by taking avoidable risks at the stops themselves. Learn where traffic tends to compress and leave a margin before those sections. The bus route is also a practical way to learn how weather and road conditions alter stopping distance for a heavy vehicle.
Police pursuits: control beats raw acceleration
Police work places you in an underpowered squad car and asks you to chase suspects through traffic. The mismatch between pursuit pressure and limited power is intentional: success depends on reading the city and keeping the car under control rather than expecting instant acceleration.

- Keep the suspect’s direction and likely escape routes in view whenever possible.
- Brake before dense traffic instead of arriving too fast and losing the line.
- Use your knowledge of intersections and alleys to anticipate where the route can tighten.
- Protect the pursuit line; a controlled shortcut is better than a dramatic maneuver that leaves you facing the wrong way.
- Return to free-roam if you repeatedly lose control. The problem may be route familiarity or braking timing rather than vehicle performance.
Because the squad car is described as underpowered, a pursuit is a test of anticipation. It is best attempted after you are comfortable with the city’s traffic patterns.

Street racing: win with knowledge of the city
Street races emphasize alleys and shortcuts. The game’s design does not assume that a high-powered car will solve every section; knowing where the circuit narrows and which shortcut is usable can matter more than maximum speed.
Preparing for a race
- Drive the course in free-roam first, if the route is accessible there.
- Identify turns that require early braking and alleys where a poor entry costs more time than the shortcut saves.
- Learn traffic pinch points and decide whether to approach them from the center or edge of the road.
- Keep steering inputs clean. A collision or spin erases the advantage of a faster line.
- Use the vehicle’s strengths: a compact car may place more accurately in alleys, while a heavier vehicle may require a wider setup.
Street racing is therefore a route-knowledge activity as much as a speed activity. If you are consistently losing despite clean driving, study the circuit and its alternatives before assuming you need a different vehicle.
Open-world exploration between jobs
Between jobs, the whole city is available for free-roam. This is where you learn the environment without the immediate demands of a fare, load, pursuit, or schedule.

What to practice
- Intersections: Approach the same junction from each direction and note sight lines, turning space, and traffic behavior.
- Alleys: Check which entrances are wide enough for larger vehicles and where a turn requires a multi-point correction.
- Braking zones: Use landmarks to create reference points for each vehicle.
- Traffic interactions: Observe how cars, cyclists, and pedestrians react to your position and speed.
- Weather and road conditions: Repeat familiar roads when conditions change so you can adjust rather than improvise during a job.
The developer also describes a cruise mode and mission-specific moods. That suggests free-roam can serve both as relaxed sightseeing and as deliberate practice, while jobs provide more focused pressure. The exact interface for selecting these modes may change before release.
Vehicles, routes, and conditions: a decision framework
When choosing how to approach a job, evaluate five questions:
- How precise must the handling be? Cargo and bus work demand early, measured inputs; racing and pursuits demand precision while under pressure.
- How much time pressure is present? A timetable or race changes how much margin you can preserve.
- What can fail? A shifted load, an unhappy passenger, a missed route, or a lost pursuit each requires a different recovery mindset.
- How much route knowledge do you have? If you do not know the alleys and intersections, learn them before taking the fastest-looking option.
- What are traffic and road conditions doing? A route that is comfortable in clear conditions may require earlier braking or a slower line when conditions change.
There is no published universal “best” vehicle. The game’s period daily drivers are intended to have distinct weight and personality, so the right choice depends on the assignment and your familiarity with it.
Setting and presentation
SHIFU: Traffic Masters presents northern China in the 1990s through a deliberately low-poly, VHS-tinted style. Vehicles and buildings are designed to evoke the workhorse cars and everyday streets of that period rather than an exotic supercar culture.

Steam currently lists a planned release in Q1 2027 and says the game is not yet available for purchase. It is listed as a Windows PC title. A planned date is not a guarantee of a particular day; the store page and developer updates are the appropriate places to verify any change.

These are the specifications currently shown by Steam and may change before release. The recommended tier calls for twice the memory and storage of the minimum listing, so checking available space and RAM before installation is sensible even if your system meets the minimum.

Controller and wheel support
A developer update says controller support was being added, while a separate developer reply says wheel support was not yet included. Those statements describe development status, not a final launch guarantee. Do not purchase a racing wheel on the assumption that the game requires or supports one.
Until the final control scheme is published, plan to begin with the input method officially supported at launch and verify the store page or in-game settings for the current bindings. The driving principles in this guide apply regardless of whether you use keyboard, controller, or another supported device, but the precise sensitivity and layout may differ.

Symptom: You overshoot a turn, shift cargo, or arrive at a stop too quickly.

Fix: Compare route knowledge with distance. A familiar road with fewer sharp decisions is often the more reliable choice, especially with a passenger, load, or timetable.
Treating every vehicle like a small car
Symptom: Bus corners clip obstacles, or a truck needs several corrections to clear a turn.
Fix: Practice the vehicle’s turning envelope in free-roam. Set up earlier and allow the rear of a long vehicle to finish the turn.
Rushing taxi fares
Symptom: The passenger leaves after aggressive acceleration, braking, or cornering.
Fix: Drive progressively and choose a route that reduces abrupt maneuvers. Passenger comfort is part of the job, not an optional bonus.
Attempting pursuits or races before learning the map
Symptom: You lose time in alleys, miss intersections, or crash while trying to recover.
Fix: Return to free-roam, learn the route, and repeat it at a controlled pace. Pressure magnifies gaps in route knowledge.
Who will get the most from SHIFU: Traffic Masters?
The game is a good fit if you enjoy learning routes, managing ordinary vehicles, and improving through controlled repetition. Its appeal is less about collecting the fastest car and more about making a workhorse vehicle behave in a busy, changing city.
It may be a poor match if you want an arcade racer built around constant high-speed action, supercars, or a finalized competitive feature set at launch. The available information emphasizes single-player jobs, free-roam exploration, physical cargo and passenger consequences, and period atmosphere rather than online multiplayer or a conventional upgrade economy. Those features have not been announced as core systems.
