Neither Sherwin-Williams nor Benjamin Moore is a universal winner. The useful choice is between specific product lines selected for the same project, surface, sheen, preparation needs and performance requirements. Official materials describe broad ranges from both companies, but no independent, matched head-to-head test establishes that one brand consistently delivers better coverage, durability or value.
The short answer: compare paint lines, not logos
A brand name does not tell you enough to choose a can of paint. Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams each sell several interior and exterior families aimed at different substrates, finishes, budgets and performance goals. A premium interior wall coating from one company may be a poor comparison for a contractor-grade product from the other.
Start with the job: interior or exterior, wall or trim, bare or previously painted surface, high-traffic or lightly used room, and the appearance you want. Then compare equivalent products in the same sheen and quantity. Check the exact local price and availability because official product materials do not establish a stable cross-brand price comparison.
What each company’s official lineups include
Benjamin Moore interior families
Benjamin Moore’s interior catalog lists several distinct families:
#1 Best Overall
- Bates paint roller kit includes 19 essential pieces for home painting, prep, and cleanup projects.
- Made with durable materials, the set includes a plastic paint tray, 9-inch and 4-inch roller frames with matching roller covers, and a 6' x 9' plastic drop cloth.
- The kit also includes a sanding block, paint mixer, can opener, painter’s tape, 2-inch foam brush, 1-inch paint brush, 1-1/2-inch angle paint brush, and 2-inch angle paint brush.
- Three paint scrapers help with surface preparation, while the different roller sizes and brush styles make it easier to paint walls, corners, trim, and detail areas.
- Perfect for home interiors and DIY painting projects, this 19-piece set keeps essential wall painting supplies together in one convenient kit.
- Aura, positioned as a higher-end interior option.
- Regal Select, described by Benjamin Moore as durable and washable.
- Advance, an interior product family used when a harder, smoother finish is desired on appropriate surfaces.
- Ultra Spec 500, part of the company’s professional-oriented interior range.
Benjamin Moore’s contractor materials emphasize choosing by substrate and project features. The listed considerations include scuff resistance, self-priming characteristics, moisture-related mildew resistance, and low- or zero-VOC formulations. These are selection attributes, not evidence that every product in the range provides every feature.
Sherwin-Williams interior families
Sherwin-Williams’ product comparison material lists these interior options:
- Emerald
- Duration Home
- SuperPaint
- Cashmere
- Harmony
- ProMar 200
This is the company’s own lineup, not an independent ranking and not proof that one listed family directly matches a particular Benjamin Moore product. The meaningful comparison is product-to-product, such as a specified premium wall coating against a comparable premium wall coating, with the same surface and sheen.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to match products fairly
Do not assume that a similarly positioned name, price or marketing phrase means two cans are equivalent. Ask each retailer to identify a product intended for the same substrate and use. A wall paint, a trim enamel and a coating designed for a particular exterior surface may all be sold by the same company but require different preparation and application.
Write down the full product name, finish, sheen, color base, container size and any stated performance features. If one candidate is marketed as self-priming and the other is not, compare the complete preparation process rather than only the paint prices. Likewise, if one option is offered in a low- or zero-VOC formulation, confirm that the exact color base and sheen retain that specification.
A useful quote request is specific: give the retailer the room or exterior surface, approximate area, existing coating, desired color, sheen, number of coats you expect to apply and any requirements such as washability, scuff resistance or moisture-related mildew resistance. Ask what primer or surface treatment is recommended. This produces a more meaningful comparison than asking for each brand’s “best paint.”
Build a fair Sherwin-Williams–Benjamin Moore comparison
Before looking at labels or price tags, write down the requirements below. Leaving one out can make an apparently cheaper or more durable option unsuitable for the actual job.

| Project use | Is the paint for interior or exterior work, and is the area a wall, ceiling, door, cabinet, trim or another surface? |
| Substrate and condition | What material is being painted, and does it need cleaning, repair, stain blocking, adhesion help or another preparation step? |
| Sheen and appearance | Do you need a flat, matte, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss or another available sheen, and will the sheen highlight surface irregularities? |
| Performance needs | Is washability, scuff resistance, moisture-related mildew resistance, self-priming behavior or low- or zero-VOC formulation important? |
| Quantity | How many gallons or other units are required for the complete job? |
| Application and finish | What application method and final appearance are acceptable for the surface and the person doing the work? |
| Local purchase | Can you obtain the exact color, sheen and quantity locally, and what is the retailer’s current price? |
Only after these fields match should you compare the two cans. A lower price for a different sheen, smaller container or less suitable product is not a meaningful saving.
Preparation can matter more than the label
Condition the surface before deciding that one paint performed better than another. Record whether the existing coating is glossy, peeling, chalky, stained or uneven. Cleaning, sanding, patching, stain treatment and adhesion work may be necessary before either brand can produce the intended finish. Moisture concerns or possible mildew also need to be addressed as part of the project rather than hidden under a new coat.

Include those tasks in both estimates. If one product requires a separate primer or an extra preparation step for the substrate, add the material and labor time to its total. A paint that costs less per gallon can be more expensive overall if the job requires additional preparation, more coats or an earlier repaint.
Sheen changes both appearance and practical performance
Benjamin Moore’s catalog notes that sheen selection relates partly to wall condition and traffic. That principle matters when comparing either brand. Lower-sheen finishes generally draw less attention to minor surface variation, while higher-sheen finishes can be easier to wipe but may reveal uneven patches or repairs more clearly. The correct choice depends on the room, the substrate and the look you want; do not assume that a higher sheen is automatically better.
Recommended Free Tools
When requesting quotes, specify the same sheen for both brands. Comparing a matte product from one company with a satin product from the other changes reflectivity, cleanability expectations and the way imperfections appear. Record the exact product name, sheen and color base on each quote so the comparison remains auditable.
How to interpret durability, washability and coverage claims
Manufacturer descriptions are not head-to-head tests
Benjamin Moore describes Regal Select as durable and washable and presents products by substrate and feature. Those statements explain the intended positioning of the product; they do not prove that Regal Select outperforms a particular Sherwin-Williams line under identical conditions.
Sherwin-Williams’ comparison guide argues that higher-quality paint can save money even when its purchase price is higher. That is a general quality-selection argument from Sherwin-Williams, not an independent finding about Benjamin Moore or a guarantee for every project.
Conditions can change the result
Benjamin Moore Canada’s FAQ says durability depends on surface type, product and sheen choice, wear, climate and accidents. The guidance is specifically Canadian-market information, so treat it as a description of factors rather than a universal performance rating for every location. The same product can experience different wear in a busy hallway, a humid room, a sun-exposed exterior or a lightly used bedroom.

The available official material does not provide an independent matched coverage test for equivalent Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore products. Avoid turning a label claim or an anecdote into a brand-wide conclusion.
Low- and zero-VOC requirements need product-level checking
Benjamin Moore’s contractor materials identify low- or zero-VOC formulations as available selection attributes. That does not mean every Benjamin Moore interior family, sheen or color base has the same specification. Check the technical information for the exact product and color formula.
Use the same standard when evaluating Sherwin-Williams. If emissions are important because of occupancy, ventilation or a project specification, ask the retailer for the exact VOC statement and any application guidance. Do not infer a formulation from a brand reputation, a product family name or a different color base.

Sherwin-Williams’ illustrative life-cycle example
Sherwin-Williams’ product comparison guide gives a hypothetical exterior scenario:
| Illustrative option | Quantity and price assumption | Service-life assumption |
|---|---|---|
| Lower-grade exterior latex paint | 20 gallons at $30 per gallon | Six years |
| Higher-quality paint | Price assumption of $45 per gallon | 25 years of service |
Using those assumptions, the guide estimates $64 per year in savings before labor or maintenance. The arithmetic is based on $600 spread over six years versus $900 spread over 25 years. The figures are Sherwin-Williams’ illustration; no publication year is shown in the source result. They are not a measured market statistic, a guarantee of service life, or a Sherwin-Williams-versus-Benjamin-Moore comparison.
For your own estimate, calculate the complete purchase cost, expected repaint interval, labor, preparation and maintenance. If a more expensive coating genuinely lasts longer in your conditions, fewer repaint cycles may matter. If the surface still needs extensive preparation or repairs, paint price alone will not determine the project cost.
Keep one-time promotions separate from ordinary pricing, and compare equal quantities. A 20-gallon example cannot be converted directly into a household room estimate without measuring the actual area and accounting for the number of coats and any primer.

Application planning and tools
Application method affects the final appearance and the amount of product used. Before buying, confirm whether the label permits the intended roller, brush or spray method for the substrate and finish. Sherwin-Williams’ architectural-coatings material identifies brushes and Purdy applicators as tools used by do-it-yourself painters and professionals; that identifies a tool category, not a guarantee that one particular applicator or kit is right for every coating.
Plan for consistent technique when comparing samples. Use the same prepared surface, number of coats, roller nap or brush type and drying conditions for both candidates. Otherwise, differences in application can be mistaken for differences in paint performance. For a whole-room job, retain a small amount of the final product and record the color, sheen and batch information for later touch-ups.
Availability and sampling affect the decision
Benjamin Moore directs customers to local stores and its independent retailer network, and its materials direct shoppers to local retailers for samples. Sherwin-Williams products are also purchased through local channels. Availability can vary by location, so confirm that the exact line, sheen, color and quantity are in stock before committing to a schedule.
A sample is useful for checking color and sheen in the actual room, where lighting and surrounding finishes alter perception. Test on a representative, properly prepared area and observe it under the room’s different lighting conditions. Keep the product label or receipt with the sample notes so you can reorder the same formula if needed.

A step-by-step way to choose between the two brands
- Define the surface. Record whether the project is interior or exterior and identify the substrate: drywall, previously painted wall, wood, trim or another material.
- Describe the condition. Note stains, gloss, peeling, repairs, porosity, moisture exposure and any adhesion or mildew concern. These observations determine preparation and may narrow the suitable product families.
- Set appearance requirements. Choose the target color and sheen. Use the same sheen when comparing both brands.
- Rank performance features. Decide which matters most: washability, scuff resistance, self-priming behavior, moisture-related mildew resistance, low- or zero-VOC formulation or another documented requirement.
- Select comparable families. Ask each retailer for products intended for the same use and performance tier. Do not match by marketing name alone.
- Confirm application details. Verify the label directions for the substrate, preparation, application method and finish expectations. If the two products require different preparation, include that time and material in the cost comparison.
- Price equal quantities. Obtain current local quotes for the same number of gallons or other units, color base and sheen. Record promotions separately from the regular price.
- Check samples and stock. Test the candidate colors and confirm the full quantity is available through the retailer you plan to use.
- Choose on total fit. Select the product that satisfies the surface, appearance, performance and availability requirements at an acceptable total project cost.
Which choice fits common project priorities?
Interior walls in a busy household
Prioritize the intended traffic level, cleanability and sheen. Benjamin Moore’s materials identify washability for Regal Select and scuff resistance as a selection feature in its contractor guidance. Sherwin-Williams offers several interior families, including Emerald, Duration Home, SuperPaint, Cashmere, Harmony and ProMar 200. Ask for equivalent products with the same sheen and compare the exact labels and local quotes.
Trim, doors or other detail work
Appearance and application behavior become as important as wall durability. Benjamin Moore lists Advance among its interior families, but the appropriate product still depends on the specific substrate and finish requirements. Compare it with a Sherwin-Williams product intended for the same use rather than with a general wall paint.
Projects where emissions matter
Benjamin Moore’s contractor materials identify low- or zero-VOC formulations as available selection attributes. Confirm the VOC statement for the exact product and color base; do not infer it from the brand name or from another line. Compare the corresponding Sherwin-Williams label information under the same requirement.
Exterior repainting
Match the substrate, exposure and expected maintenance cycle. The Sherwin-Williams life-cycle example shows how a higher purchase price could look different when paired with a longer assumed service life, but its numbers are illustrative. Obtain product-specific guidance and local pricing before treating longevity as a reason to pay more.

- Comparing a brand’s flagship with the other brand’s entry product. Product tier must be matched before performance or price can be interpreted.
- Ignoring sheen. A different sheen changes appearance and practical expectations.
- Using a starting price. Color, size, retailer and promotion can change the final invoice.
- Assuming one product represents the whole brand. Each company has multiple interior families and different substrate guidance.
- Treating marketing language as test data. “Durable,” “washable” or “higher quality” are not independent comparative measurements.
- Skipping preparation in the cost calculation. Cleaning, repairs, adhesion work or stain treatment can dominate the labor and material budget.
- Generalizing Canadian guidance. Benjamin Moore Canada’s durability FAQ is Canadian-market guidance and should be read in that geographic context.
- Buying before checking stock. A color or sheen that cannot be obtained locally can delay the project or force an unplanned substitute.
- Changing application methods between samples. Different tools, coat counts or drying conditions can create a false impression of superiority.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—establish
The official sources establish that both companies offer broad product ranges and that product selection should be tied to the project, substrate, sheen and desired features. They also establish that Benjamin Moore presents Regal Select as durable and washable, that its contractor materials discuss attributes such as scuff resistance and low- or zero-VOC formulations, and that Sherwin-Williams publishes a quality-versus-cost illustration.
They do not establish an independent, matched result showing that Sherwin-Williams has better coverage, that Benjamin Moore lasts longer, or that either brand offers better value in every market. User anecdotes may help identify questions to ask, but they cannot replace a controlled comparison of equivalent products under the same conditions.
Frequently asked questions
Is Sherwin-Williams paint better than Benjamin Moore?
No universal winner is established. Compare the exact products for the same surface, sheen, features, quantity and local conditions. The brands’ own product descriptions are not independent head-to-head performance tests.
Which brand has the best coverage?
The available official materials do not provide a matched coverage test between equivalent products. Coverage depends on surface porosity, preparation, color change, application technique and coats required.
Is Benjamin Moore Regal Select washable?
Benjamin Moore describes Regal Select as durable and washable. That is a manufacturer description of that product family, not proof that it outperforms every Sherwin-Williams product.

Should I compare Aura with Emerald?
You can request quotes for products at a similar intended use and performance tier, but do not assume the names make them equivalent. Match the substrate, sheen, color base, application requirements and documented features first.
Does a higher sheen always last longer?
No. Sheen affects appearance and practical cleaning expectations, and higher sheen can make surface flaws more visible. Choose based on wall condition, traffic and the desired look.
How can I compare prices accurately?
Obtain current local quotes for the same product tier, color base, sheen, container size and quantity. Include primer, preparation, labor and likely repaint intervals rather than comparing a single gallon price.
Are Benjamin Moore paints low- or zero-VOC?
Benjamin Moore’s contractor materials identify low- or zero-VOC formulations as available attributes, but the specification is product- and color-dependent. Verify the exact label information and compare it with the corresponding Sherwin-Williams product.
Where should I buy Benjamin Moore samples?
Benjamin Moore directs customers to local stores and its independent retailer network for samples and purchases. Confirm local availability of the exact color, sheen and quantity before scheduling the work.
Bottom line
Choose the exact paint that fits your surface, project use, sheen, performance priorities, preparation needs and local availability. Get equal-quantity quotes from both retailers, verify the label claims for the specific product, and use samples before purchasing the full amount. That process produces a defensible choice; choosing by brand reputation alone does not.
