Shell-derived materials have shown remineralization-related changes in laboratory studies, but there is no evidence in the cited research that shell extract rebuilds teeth in people. “Shell extract” can refer to different materials, including mother-of-pearl components, eggshell extract, and hydroxyapatite made using eggshell-derived calcium; results for one are not proof for the others.
What shell-material studies have found
Mother-of-pearl as a mineralization template
A 2013 summary from the Royal Society of Chemistry described laboratory research in which an organic component of mother-of-pearl acted as a template for hydroxyapatite mineralization on enamel. Researcher Zanyong Zhuang was quoted as saying, “Our study demonstrates that the WSM is an effective template for hydroxyapatite remineralisation.” That finding concerns the material’s role as a template in the reported experiment; it does not establish a treatment that repairs teeth in patients. Eggshell extract on extracted teeth
A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis included 17 in vitro studies using extracted human or bovine teeth. The authors reported statistically significant changes in enamel microhardness, surface roughness, and calcium-to-phosphate ratio. For microhardness, the pooled effect was Cohen’s d = 0.45 (95% CI 0.30–0.60); for surface roughness, Cohen’s d = −0.50 (95% CI −0.70 to −0.30), with I² = 45%. These are pooled laboratory measurements, not estimates of benefit to a person’s teeth. The review notes that formulations varied and that in vivo studies are needed. A separate 2026 laboratory study synthesized hydroxyapatite using eggshell-derived calcium and tested toothpaste formulations on artificially demineralized bovine enamel. The authors reported increased microhardness. Their calculated remineralization percentage was 115.97% under that study’s laboratory model; it does not mean that human enamel was restored by 115.97%. The experiment was not a human trial and does not establish that a commercial eggshell-based toothpaste is available or effective. 2026 toothpaste-formulation study.

Why “rebuilds teeth” overstates the evidence
Laboratory mineral deposition or a change in the hardness of an enamel specimen is not the same as rebuilding a tooth in clinical use. The cited eggshell studies used extracted teeth or artificially demineralized bovine enamel, while a review of mollusk-shell-derived hydroxyapatite reported that no human clinical trial had investigated its dental application at the time of publication. Laboratory and animal findings should not be treated as evidence that shell-derived materials repair a cavity or restore a patient’s tooth. Review of mollusk-shell-derived hydroxyapatite.
The ingredient also matters: mother-of-pearl organic material, eggshell extract, and synthesized eggshell-derived hydroxyapatite are distinct materials and formulations. A result for one does not establish that another shell product, or a retail toothpaste containing hydroxyapatite, has the same effect.

What is established for early enamel damage
Tooth decay is a dynamic process: minerals are lost and regained, with biofilm, sugar, saliva, fluoride exposure, and preventive habits all playing a role. The American Dental Association describes fluoride as an aid to enamel remineralization and says it can reverse early decay. Its professional guidance recommends particular topical fluoride options for people at elevated caries risk, with recommendations varying by age and product. That clinical guidance supports fluoride use; it does not show that shell-derived materials work in the same way or to the same degree. If you suspect a cavity or have persistent tooth sensitivity, seek dental evaluation rather than relying on a shell-derived product. Evidence of a laboratory effect is not evidence that a product can treat a cavity or replace professional care.
