Sheet Metal is not a substitute for every metal resource in ARC Raiders. It is a common basic material aimed mainly at Outpost construction, while Metal Parts are a broader crafting input and Mechanical Components are refined intermediates made in the Refiner. Keep Sheet Metal when you are working toward an Outpost project, gather Metal Parts for general recipes, and refine Mechanical Components only when a recipe specifically calls for them.
The exact projects, vendor inventories and recipes can change with updates. The quantities below reflect the item references and guide material available for this article, so verify the current in-game description before treating them as permanent.
How the three resources differ
The names sound as though they describe grades of real metal, but they are separate inventory items with different roles in the game’s crafting economy. Treating them as interchangeable can leave you short of the material a project actually requests.

This distinction gives you a practical rule: do not refine or discard Sheet Metal simply because it is metal-themed, and do not assume that a stockpile of Metal Parts satisfies a Sheet Metal requirement. The game checks the exact item type named by the project or recipe.

Sheet Metal: uses, sources and limitations
Its main job is Outpost construction
The ARC Raiders Wiki classifies Sheet Metal as a common basic material used in crafting and specifically required for Outpost furniture. Its current item page lists a five-unit requirement for an Outpost project. That number is a game-system requirement, not a real-world measurement, and it can change when the project data is patched.
A separate PC Gamer guide published October 9, 2026 identifies the Sheltered Retreat project as another use. Because project names and requirements are update-sensitive, use the current project panel in your build rather than relying on an old checklist. If the project asks for Sheet Metal, Metal Parts cannot be substituted unless the interface explicitly offers an alternative.
Where to find it
- Scavenge industrial and technological areas. The item reference lists scavenging as a source, and the October 9, 2026 guide points to industrial or technological locations as practical places to search.
- Buy it from Celeste. Both the item reference and the recent guide identify Celeste as a source. Vendor stock is a current-game condition, so check her inventory rather than assuming every visit will show the item.
The available evidence does not establish a permanent spawn table, guaranteed container type or fixed purchase price. Use area descriptions and the live vendor inventory as the authority for your current build.

The current Sheet Metal item page says it cannot be recycled or salvaged. That makes unwanted Sheet Metal less flexible than Metal Parts: you cannot count on converting it into another basic resource through a recycling or salvage action. If you may build Outpost furniture later, retaining it is usually safer than treating it as disposable junk.

Metal Parts: the broad crafting input
Why Metal Parts are more generally useful
The ARC Raiders Wiki describes Metal Parts as one of the five basic crafting materials and says they are used to craft a wide range of items. Unlike Sheet Metal’s strongly documented Outpost emphasis, Metal Parts function as a general input that can appear across ordinary crafting requirements.
This breadth makes Metal Parts the better default target when you are collecting without a particular project in mind. It also makes them the material you are most likely to spend on intermediate processing, because the Mechanical Components recipe consumes them directly.
Sources for Metal Parts
- Scavenging: Search normal loot routes and inspect items that can be collected during a run.
- Recycling: Metal Parts are listed as a recycling source, giving you a way to turn eligible unwanted items into a basic crafting input.
- Celeste: The vendor is listed as a source for Metal Parts as well as Sheet Metal. Stock and availability should be checked in the current vendor screen.
- Scrappy: The item reference lists Scrappy among the possible sources.
- Quests: Quest rewards are another listed source, so check reward previews before selecting a turn-in when you are short on Metal Parts.
The source list does not establish that every quest, Scrappy interaction or recycling result awards the same quantity. Treat those as acquisition channels, not guaranteed yields.

Recipe and purpose
Mechanical Components are a separate refined item, not another name for Sheet Metal. The item reference at arcraiders.co gives the Refiner recipe as 7 Metal Parts plus 3 Rubber Parts. The component is then used to craft weapons, attachments and other items that specify Mechanical Components.

Because the recipe consumes two basic materials, refining is a conversion decision rather than a free upgrade. Seven Metal Parts that are turned into one batch of Mechanical Components are no longer available for a different recipe, and the three Rubber Parts are committed at the same time.
When refining makes sense
- Refine when a known weapon, attachment or other recipe requires Mechanical Components and you have enough Metal Parts and Rubber Parts to cover that requirement.
- Delay refining when your immediate plan is an Outpost project or another recipe that directly asks for Metal Parts.
- Do not refine Sheet Metal as a substitute. The documented recipe names Metal Parts, not Sheet Metal.
- Check the Refiner’s current recipe text before confirming, since recipe data can change between patches.
A safe refining workflow
- Open the Refiner interface in your current build.
- Select Mechanical Components and read the displayed input list. Confirm that it shows seven Metal Parts and three Rubber Parts, or note any updated values.
- Compare those inputs with your active Outpost projects, weapon plans and other pending recipes.
- Confirm the batch only when the resulting component has a specific near-term use or when your reserve comfortably covers other requirements.
- After refining, recheck your inventory and the target recipe so you know how many additional components or basic materials remain.

The practical difference is not rarity alone. It is substitutability. Metal Parts can feed a broad set of recipes and the Refiner, whereas Sheet Metal has a narrower but important construction role and cannot be recovered through salvage or recycling according to the current item page.
How to decide what to keep
If an Outpost project is active
Keep every Sheet Metal unit needed by the project before spending time on other uses. The Wiki lists a five-unit requirement for one Outpost project, and the recent guide names Sheltered Retreat as another project use. Since the evidence does not pair the five-unit figure with a specific project name, read the exact requirement shown in your own Outpost screen.
If you are preparing to craft weapons or attachments
Prioritize Metal Parts and Rubber Parts for the Mechanical Components recipe when your target weapon or attachment explicitly requests that refined component. Count the complete input chain, not just the Metal Parts: a shortage of three Rubber Parts still prevents the documented batch.

If you are running general scavenging with no plan
Collect both materials when inventory space permits. Metal Parts have more listed acquisition routes and broader recipe use; Sheet Metal is harder to repurpose because recycling and salvage are not available on its current item page. The right reserve is therefore project-dependent rather than a universal number.
If storage is becoming a problem
- Protect Sheet Metal that matches an upcoming Outpost requirement.
- Keep enough Metal Parts for the next recipe chain you can actually name.
- Use the in-game recipe and project panels to identify surplus before discarding anything.
- Do not assume that a metal-themed item can be converted into another one; the documented systems distinguish them.
Step-by-step sourcing plan
Plan a Sheet Metal run
- Check the Outpost project or furniture panel and write down the exact Sheet Metal requirement shown there.
- Visit Celeste and check whether Sheet Metal is currently available.
- If the vendor does not have enough, prioritize industrial and technological areas during scavenging, as identified by the October 9, 2026 guide.
- On returning, compare the collected amount with the live project requirement rather than the five-unit figure from the Wiki alone.
- Store the material for the project because the current item page says it cannot be recycled or salvaged.
Plan a Metal Parts run
- List the items you intend to craft and total their Metal Parts requirements.
- Check Celeste, Scrappy and available quest rewards for additional sources.
- Recycle eligible unwanted items when the current interface shows Metal Parts as the output.
- Scavenge normally to fill the remaining gap.
- Reserve seven Metal Parts and three Rubber Parts for each Mechanical Components batch you have deliberately planned, rather than refining automatically.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“They are all metal, so they should be interchangeable”
They are not. Sheet Metal, Metal Parts and Mechanical Components are distinct item records. A project or recipe accepts the named resource, not any item with “metal” in its title.
“I can recycle Sheet Metal later”
The current Sheet Metal reference says it cannot be recycled or salvaged. Treat that as a storage and spending constraint until a later patch changes the item behavior.

“Mechanical Components are a natural drop”
The documented source is a Refiner conversion using seven Metal Parts and three Rubber Parts. Plan for both inputs and verify the current recipe before starting a run.

“The five-unit requirement applies everywhere”
The Wiki lists five Sheet Metal for an Outpost project, while the recent guide separately identifies Sheltered Retreat as a use. Those facts do not establish that every Outpost project costs five units. Use the requirement displayed for the specific project in your version.
“Vendor stock is permanent”
Celeste is a listed source, but the available material does not establish a permanent stock rotation or guaranteed quantity. Check the live shop each time.
Patch sensitivity and source reliability
Community item references and a recent guide are useful for identifying roles and recipes, but no official publisher source confirming the current material data was surfaced. Item sourcing, vendor availability, recipes and project costs may change with updates. The most reliable practical check is the current in-game item description, project panel, vendor inventory and Refiner recipe.
