SVG artwork can scale without the same loss of detail as a raster image, but a PNG export has fixed pixel dimensions. If the PNG looks soft, check its pixel size and any later resizing first; then inspect the SVG’s viewport, viewBox, export bounds, and rendering settings. The right fix depends on whether the problem is insufficient pixels, unexpected framing, or how edges are rendered.
First, identify where the blur appears
Compare the SVG and PNG at the same on-screen size. If the SVG looks sharp but the PNG does not, start by checking the exported PNG’s actual width and height in pixels and whether another app or webpage resized it. A PNG stores artwork as a fixed grid of pixels; enlarging that grid can make the image look blurred or pixelated. Keep the SVG as the resizable source file. Adobe explains the difference between raster and vector files.
- Only the PNG is soft: check export dimensions and downstream scaling.
- The artwork is framed or spaced unexpectedly: check the viewport,
viewBox, aspect ratio, and export area. - The dimensions are right but curves or edges look different: inspect fractional scaling and rendering hints.
Check how the SVG maps into its viewport
The root <svg> element’s viewBox defines a coordinate-space rectangle: its position and dimensions. The viewport is the rectangle in which that coordinate space is displayed. The SVG renderer maps the viewBox into the viewport, which may scale the artwork. MDN’s viewBox reference explains that mapping, while its SVG element reference and width reference describe viewport dimensions and sizing.
- Inspect the root
<svg>element and note itswidth, height, andviewBox. - Check whether CSS or the export application changes the viewport dimensions.
- Compare the viewport’s width-to-height ratio with the viewBox’s ratio.
- If the ratios differ, inspect
preserveAspectRatio. Its default isxMidYMid meet: it preserves the full viewBox and centers it, so unused space can remain in the viewport. MDN documents the fitting behavior and default.
A ratio mismatch or unexpected viewport size can change the framing or scale of the result. It is a different problem from a PNG that simply lacks enough pixels.

Choose the export area that matches the intended bounds
Inkscape provides four export areas. Choose based on what the PNG should contain, not just on the artwork’s apparent size in the editor. In Inkscape’s Beginners’ Guide to exporting a PNG, the options are:
- Page: the whole page.
- Drawing: the drawn objects.
- Selection: the selected objects.
- Custom: coordinates entered by the user.
If the PNG includes too much empty space or crops an object, check whether the chosen area matches the desired image bounds. Exporting the page, for example, can include page margins that are not part of the drawing.

Set PNG pixel dimensions for the final use
Choose the PNG’s width and height in pixels to suit the size at which it will be displayed. If the destination requires a specific image size, use those pixel dimensions as the target and inspect the exported file to confirm the result. Avoid enlarging a small PNG afterward when you can export a new one from the SVG.

That is an Inkscape-specific default, not a universal quality threshold or a print recommendation. Inkscape provides controls for pixel size and resolution; use the dimensions required by your destination rather than relying on a DPI label alone. See the Inkscape command reference.

For print, ask the print provider or workflow for its required pixel dimensions or resolution. The appropriate setting depends on the intended output; no single DPI value fixes every blurry export.
Check for resizing and fractional-pixel rounding
After export, verify the PNG’s actual pixel dimensions. An image editor, webpage, or other downstream step may scale it away from its native size, softening its appearance. If exact dimensions matter, also check whether the export scale produces a fractional-pixel result. Adobe describes a Photoshop example in which fractional scaling can lead to an image one pixel larger than expected, and explains how to set exact export dimensions: Exported images one pixel larger in Photoshop.

A one-pixel discrepancy is a sizing issue, not proof that the artwork itself is blurry. Re-export or set exact dimensions when the output must match a specified pixel size.

Adjust edge rendering only after dimensions and bounds are right
SVG’s shape-rendering values are rendering hints. For example, crispEdges may disable antialiasing or align edges to device pixels, while geometricPrecision emphasizes geometric precision. These hints do not add pixels to the PNG. Changing them can make edges appear harder, so they may trade smooth curves for a more jagged or pixel-aligned look. MDN describes the available shape-rendering hints.

Likewise, image-rendering is a speed-versus-quality hint for image processing, and its SVG attribute applies to <image> elements. It is not a substitute for exporting enough pixels for the final display size. See MDN’s image-rendering reference.
Quick Recap
Use this export checklist
- Compare the SVG and PNG at the same display size to establish which version looks soft.
- Inspect the root
<svg>dimensions andviewBox; check for CSS or application changes to the viewport. - Compare the viewBox and viewport aspect ratios, and inspect
preserveAspectRatioif they differ. - Choose the export area that matches the desired bounds: Page, Drawing, Selection, or Custom in Inkscape.
- Set the PNG’s pixel dimensions for its final use and verify the exported file’s actual dimensions.
- If the PNG is too small, export a fresh PNG from the SVG instead of enlarging the existing raster.
- If exact dimensions are essential, check for fractional scaling and rounding.
- Only then experiment with edge-rendering hints, judging whether the result improves curves without making them look harsh.
