Shark is the better choice if an auto-empty dock is non-negotiable. The Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty System (IP3251) includes a dock that charges the vacuum and empties it after every cleaning session. Dyson’s Gen5detect has a wall-mounted charging and tool-storage dock, but the cited Dyson documentation does not describe any automatic emptying.

Dyson is the more defensible alternative when cleaning-performance evidence and particle sensing matter more than hands-free dust disposal. However, the available independent comparison tested Dyson V15 Detect against a different Shark model, PowerDetect Cordless IP1251—not the exact Gen5detect-versus-IP3251 pairing—so neither brand has an independently verified head-to-head result for these two exact models.

The short answer

Question Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty IP3251 Dyson Gen5detect
Does it empty itself? Yes. Shark says the dock charges and empties the vacuum after every clean. No auto-empty feature is described in the cited Dyson material; its dock is for wall-mounted charging and tool storage.
Documented dock storage 2.0-liter dock bin; Shark says dirt can be locked away for up to 45 days. Not stated in the cited material.
Claimed maximum runtime Up to 70 minutes, according to Shark’s current product page. Not stated in the cited material.
Cleaning-performance evidence Shark makes a best-in-class debris-cleaning claim using ASTM F2607 and IEC 62885-2 methods; this is a manufacturer claim. Dyson documents a piezo sensor that counts and sizes particles and can raise power in Auto mode. An independent RTINGS comparison favored Dyson V15 Detect over Shark IP1251, but those are not the models in this table.
Listed price $449.99 on Shark’s current product page; SharkNinja listed the suggested retail price as $449.99 in 2024. Not stated in the cited material.
Warranty Five-year limited warranty, according to Shark’s product page. Not stated in the cited material.

For a household that wants to finish vacuuming and leave dust handling to the dock, choose the Shark system. For someone willing to empty a bin manually in exchange for Dyson’s documented particle-sensing behavior and the possibility of stronger performance in independent testing of related models, Gen5detect is the more relevant option.

What an auto-empty dock actually changes

An auto-empty dock adds a second job to the charging stand: after the handheld vacuum is returned, the dock transfers collected debris into a larger container. Shark explicitly describes the IP3251 dock as charging and emptying the vacuum after every clean. That is the defining difference in this comparison, not a minor accessory.

Shark rates the IP3251 dock bin at 2.0 liters and says it can lock away dirt for up to 45 days. Both figures are Shark specifications and marketing claims, not independent measurements. The 45-day statement is a storage claim for the dock, not a guarantee that every home will go that long: homes with shedding pets, many occupants, renovation dust, or large floor areas will fill a container faster.

Dyson’s Gen5detect documentation describes a wall-mounted dock for recharging and storing tools. TechRadar’s comparison states that Dyson’s dock does not offer auto-empty features. Therefore, the Gen5detect owner must plan for dustbin emptying as a separate chore; the cited material does not establish how many cleaning sessions a Gen5detect bin lasts or how often a typical owner must empty it.

The exact models and what is documented

Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty System (IP3251)

Shark lists the IP3251 at $449.99 on its current product page and gives it a five-year limited warranty. The company claims up to 70 minutes of runtime, a 2.0-liter dock bin, and dirt storage for up to 45 days. Runtime is a maximum claim rather than a guaranteed result for every mode, floor type, battery age, or accessory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shark’s product page says, “The Shark® PowerDetect™ Clean & Empty system delivers the BEST debris cleaning* of ANY cordless vacuum plus an Auto-Empty dock that charges & empties after every clean.” The asterisk is tied to a comparison footnote referencing ASTM F2607 and IEC 62885-2 methods. This wording should be read as Shark’s labeled performance claim, not as an independent verdict that covers every cordless vacuum or the exact Dyson Gen5detect comparison.

Shark also says the dock “LOCKS AWAY DIRT FOR UP TO 45 DAYS.” That language supports the convenience case: the user can leave the vacuum on its dock rather than opening a small handheld dust cup after each session. The supplied specifications do not state whether dock consumables are bags, filters, or another format, nor do they give replacement costs.

Dyson Gen5detect

Dyson documents a wall-mounted charging dock that also stores tools. Its piezo sensor counts and sizes particles, and Dyson says the sensor can increase suction in Auto mode. Those are sensing and control features that may appeal to users who want the machine to react to changing debris loads or display particle information.

The cited Dyson material does not describe an auto-empty dock. A charging dock and an auto-empty dock are not interchangeable: the former returns power and stores the machine, while the latter also transfers collected debris into a larger reservoir. If hands-free emptying is the purchase requirement, Gen5detect does not meet the documented requirement in this comparison.

Newer Shark context: PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty

TechRadar reported that Shark’s PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty launched in the United States and United Kingdom in April 2026 at $499.99 or £499.99. The reviewed specification cited 150 AW maximum suction, a 2-liter dock bin, and approximately 3.2 kilograms for the complete system. Availability and specifications vary by region.

PowerDetect Speed is useful context for shoppers seeing multiple Shark auto-empty products, but it is not the same model as IP3251. Do not transfer its 150 AW, weight, launch price, or accessory list to IP3251 without checking the product page for the country where you intend to buy.

Auto-empty convenience, dust exposure, and allergies

Which model requires less daily handling?

IP3251 has the clear advantage on documented workflow. Return it to the dock after cleaning and the dock is designed to charge and empty it. The 2.0-liter reservoir means the user handles a larger quantity of collected debris less often than with a small handheld cup, subject to how quickly the reservoir fills.

Gen5detect’s wall dock still makes storage and charging convenient, but it does not remove the emptying step. The available Dyson information does not provide a bin-capacity figure or a tested emptying interval, so an exact “every X days” comparison would be unsupported.

What does the 150-times dust-exposure claim mean?

SharkNinja stated in 2024 that the system exposes users to 150 times less dust than manual emptying. This is a manufacturer claim, and the supplied material does not provide the test setup, particle definition, or independent replication. It is reasonable to treat the dock as potentially reducing the moment-to-moment handling of loose debris, but not to present 150× as a universal laboratory result for every home.

Neither the cited IP3251 material nor the cited Gen5detect material establishes a complete allergy-performance comparison, such as allergen-removal percentages, emissions during docking, or a certified advantage for one model. People with severe allergies should check the current filtration, disposal, and maintenance instructions for the exact regional version before buying.

Cleaning performance: claims versus independent evidence

What Shark claims

Shark labels IP3251 as delivering the best debris cleaning of any cordless vacuum and ties the statement to ASTM F2607 and IEC 62885-2 methods. The methods reference gives the claim a testing framework, but the statement remains Shark’s own comparison claim. It is not proof that IP3251 beats Gen5detect on every floor, particle size, or cleaning pass.

What independent testing says—and does not say

RTINGS concluded that Dyson V15 Detect performed better than Shark PowerDetect Cordless IP1251 in its tested comparison. That result can support a performance-oriented Dyson argument, but it cannot be relabeled as a Gen5detect-versus-IP3251 result. V15 Detect and Gen5detect are different Dyson models, and IP1251 and IP3251 are different Shark models with different product configurations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No independently published named statistic in the available material directly compares Gen5detect and IP3251 while also testing the auto-empty function. The honest conclusion is therefore conditional: Shark has the stronger documented convenience case, while Dyson has a credible performance-and-sensing case based on its own features and related-model testing, not a direct test of this exact pair.

Which is better for pet hair?

The available material does not provide a direct pet-hair test for Gen5detect and IP3251, so neither can be declared the tested winner for that use case. A pet owner should separate two questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • How much handling do you want? IP3251’s automatic emptying is useful when frequent hair pickup would otherwise require repeated dust-cup emptying.
  • Which cleaning result is independently proven? The cited RTINGS result concerns V15 Detect and IP1251, not the two models here. Shark’s best-debris claim is manufacturer-supplied.

If a home produces large amounts of fur, the dock’s 2.0-liter capacity and Shark’s up-to-45-day storage statement are relevant convenience claims, but inspect the reservoir regularly rather than waiting for the maximum period. If your priority is a documented particle-sensing system that can increase power in Auto mode, Gen5detect offers that feature, while the supplied IP3251 information does not document an equivalent sensor specification.

Which is better for allergy-sensitive households?

IP3251 is the more convenient design for minimizing routine contact with loose debris because the dock performs the emptying step. SharkNinja’s 150-times-less-dust-exposure statement points in that direction, but it is a manufacturer claim rather than an independent allergy study.

Gen5detect’s cited documentation establishes particle counting and sizing, not a clinical or household allergy advantage. Particle sensing can inform automatic power control, but it does not by itself establish lower allergen emissions during emptying. For either model, verify the current filter-maintenance and disposal instructions for your country and keep the dock or charging area accessible for regular maintenance.

Regional names, bundles, and availability

Model names are not interchangeable across markets. IP3251 is the Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty System covered by the $449.99 current listing. TechRadar’s April 2026 report concerns PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty, with United States and United Kingdom launch pricing of $499.99 and £499.99. The report also notes that availability and specifications vary by region.

Before ordering, match all of the following:

  • The complete model number, not only the PowerDetect family name.
  • Whether the listing explicitly includes the auto-empty dock.
  • The included battery, tools, filters, and dock reservoir.
  • The warranty offered in your country.
  • Whether replacement filters or dock components are sold locally.

Dyson listings can likewise bundle different tools or use market-specific names. A Gen5detect listing that includes a wall dock should not be interpreted as an auto-empty package unless the seller explicitly documents that function.

How to choose without overreading the claims

Choose Shark IP3251 when hands-free emptying is a hard requirement

  • You want the dock to charge and empty the vacuum after every cleaning session.
  • You prefer a larger 2.0-liter dirt reservoir over handling a handheld bin.
  • Shark’s up-to-70-minute runtime claim and five-year limited warranty fit your requirements.
  • You accept that the strongest debris-cleaning and 45-day storage statements come from Shark, not an independent direct comparison.

Choose Dyson Gen5detect when sensing and performance evidence come first

  • You are comfortable emptying the dustbin yourself.
  • You value the piezo sensor’s particle counting and sizing and its ability to increase power in Auto mode.
  • You want a wall-mounted charging and tool-storage dock rather than an auto-empty system.
  • You understand that the independent Dyson advantage cited here comes from a V15 Detect-versus-IP1251 test, not this exact model pair.

Pause and verify before buying either

  • The retailer’s exact model number and included dock.
  • Current regional price, stock, taxes, and warranty.
  • Dock dimensions and available wall or floor space.
  • Filter and dock-bin replacement availability.
  • Whether your priority is less dust handling or independently tested cleaning performance.

Practical setup and daily-use routines

Shark IP3251 routine

  1. Install the charging and auto-empty dock in a location that can accommodate the complete system.
  2. After cleaning, return the vacuum to the dock so the documented charge-and-empty cycle can occur.
  3. Check the 2.0-liter dock reservoir periodically; the up-to-45-day statement is a maximum claim, not a required interval.
  4. Follow the current regional instructions for filter care and dock-reservoir maintenance.

Dyson Gen5detect routine

  1. Mount the wall dock where the vacuum and tools can be stored safely.
  2. Return the vacuum to the dock for charging and tool storage after use.
  3. Plan a separate dustbin-emptying routine because the cited dock documentation does not include automatic emptying.
  4. Use the current Dyson instructions for bin, filter, and sensor maintenance; the supplied specifications do not establish a universal emptying frequency.

Common buying mistakes

Assuming every PowerDetect model has identical specifications

IP3251 and PowerDetect Speed are different products. Speed’s reported 150 AW maximum suction, approximately 3.2-kilogram complete weight, and 2026 launch pricing do not automatically apply to IP3251.

Treating a dock as proof of auto-emptying

Dyson Gen5detect has a dock, but the cited description is for wall-mounted charging and tool storage. Look for explicit wording that the dock empties the vacuum; otherwise assume it does not.

Turning a manufacturer claim into a test result

Shark’s best-debris, 70-minute, 45-day, and 150-times-less-dust statements should remain labeled as claims. The RTINGS result should remain labeled as a comparison of V15 Detect and IP1251.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using a related-model review as a direct verdict

Performance results from V15 Detect versus IP1251 can inform your questions, but they cannot establish the outcome for Gen5detect versus IP3251. The exact pair lacks a named independent auto-empty comparison in the available evidence.

Final decision

Buy the Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty System IP3251 if the phrase “empties itself” describes a requirement rather than a preference. It is the only model in this comparison with a documented auto-empty dock, a stated 2.0-liter dock bin, and Shark’s up-to-45-day dirt-storage claim.

Buy Dyson Gen5detect only if you are willing to empty the vacuum manually and would rather prioritize its documented particle-sensing and Auto-mode behavior. Dyson may be the better performance-oriented bet, but the strongest independent result cited here is for a different Dyson and Shark pairing. That distinction is the difference between an evidence-based choice and an overconfident one.
