To share a Samsung Galaxy phone’s internet, open Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering. Turn on Mobile Hotspot, then connect your laptop, tablet, or other device to the phone’s Wi-Fi network. Samsung also documents USB, Bluetooth, and Ethernet tethering, though available options vary by model, carrier, and software version.

Set up a Wi-Fi mobile hotspot

  1. On your Galaxy phone, open Settings.
  2. Tap Connections, then Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.
  3. Switch on Mobile Hotspot.
  4. On the other device, open its Wi-Fi settings and select the Galaxy phone’s network. Enter the hotspot password, or scan the hotspot QR code if your phone offers one.
  5. If you want to change the network name, password, security, or band, open the hotspot configuration on the phone. Keep the hotspot password-protected. Samsung notes that these settings can vary. See Samsung’s mobile hotspot instructions.

Choose another tethering method

Wi-Fi is convenient for connecting devices without a cable. Samsung also describes USB, Bluetooth, and Ethernet tethering; the options available depend on the Galaxy device and software. The cited Samsung guidance does not establish a speed or battery-life ranking among these methods.

Method Connection and hardware How to start
Wi-Fi hotspot Connects other devices over Wi-Fi. Turn on Mobile Hotspot in Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.
USB tethering Connects the phone to a computer with a USB data cable compatible with both devices. Connect the cable, then enable USB tethering in Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering. The setting may not be available until the phone is connected.
Bluetooth tethering Uses a paired Bluetooth connection. Pair the devices, then look for the Bluetooth tethering option in the same settings area.
Ethernet tethering Requires compatible Ethernet hardware. Connect compatible equipment and check the tethering settings for the option.

Samsung’s tethering overview describes these methods. Its USB guidance was last updated September 25, 2024.

Check your plan and data allowance

Tethering sends traffic over the phone’s mobile-data connection. Whether it is available, and how much tethering data you can use, depends on your carrier account and plan. Check with your carrier for eligibility, applicable plan rules, and remaining tethering data. If other devices connect to the hotspot but cannot reach the internet, an exhausted tethering allowance is one possible cause. See Samsung’s hotspot and tethering troubleshooting guide.

Fix common hotspot problems

The hotspot network does not appear

  • Check whether the hotspot network is hidden. If it is, turn off the hidden-network setting or connect by QR code if available.
  • If the phone offers a band setting, try 2.4 GHz for broader compatibility with other devices.
  • Confirm that mobile data works on the Galaxy phone and check SIM, account, and carrier restrictions.

Samsung notes that a hidden network or an incompatible band can prevent another device from finding the hotspot, and that settings vary by device and carrier. See Samsung’s hotspot setup guidance.

Devices connect but have no internet

Check that mobile data is working on the phone and that your carrier account permits tethering and has remaining tethering data. VPN behavior or carrier provisioning can also affect hotspot operation, according to Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance.

A tethering option is missing or unavailable

Menu names and feature availability vary by Galaxy model, carrier, and software version. For USB tethering, first connect the phone to the computer with a suitable data cable; Samsung says the USB option may appear only after connection. If the setting remains unavailable, check the device’s connection options and your carrier’s tethering support. See Samsung’s Galaxy connection-options overview.

Keep battery use in mind

Samsung warns that using a mobile hotspot consumes battery power. If you plan to share the connection for an extended period, keep the phone near a charger and monitor its battery level. Tethering also uses mobile data, so track your allowance through your carrier.
