To share Wi‑Fi from an iPhone, have the other person select the network on a nearby Apple device, then tap Share Password on your unlocked iPhone when prompted. Both people need Apple Accounts and each other’s account contact details saved in Contacts. If that flow is unavailable, show the network’s QR code or copy its saved password for manual entry.
Before you share: check these requirements
- Your iPhone is unlocked, connected to the Wi‑Fi network, and has Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth turned on.
- Both people are signed in to an Apple Account, and each has the other person’s Apple Account email address or phone number saved in Contacts.
- The devices are close enough to communicate over Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth.
- Personal Hotspot is turned off on either device if it is enabled.
- Apple recommends that both devices use the latest available iOS, iPadOS, or macOS version.
Apple’s current Wi‑Fi password sharing instructions cover the supported Apple-device flow. Apple’s iPhone guide also specifies that devices must be within Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth range and that the sharing device must not be using Personal Hotspot: Find and share your Wi‑Fi password on iPhone.
How to share your Wi‑Fi password from your iPhone
- On your iPhone, confirm that Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth are on, the phone is unlocked, and it is connected to the network you want to share.
- Make sure both people meet the Apple Account and Contacts requirements above, keep the devices nearby, and turn off Personal Hotspot if it is on.
- On the recipient’s iPhone, iPad, or Mac, open Wi‑Fi settings and select the same network.
- When the Wi‑Fi Password prompt appears on your iPhone, tap Share Password. Tap Done if that button appears.
The recipient’s device receives access without you having to read out or type the password. The prompt appears on the iPhone that is already connected to the network, not on the device requesting access.

Can you share Wi‑Fi with a QR code?
Yes. On the iPhone, open Wi‑Fi settings, open the network’s details, and choose Show Network QR Code. The other person can scan the code to join. This is useful when you want to let guests scan in, including from an optional printed guest Wi‑Fi sign; a sign is not required for the automatic Apple-device sharing flow.

Apple’s iPhone guide documents showing the network QR code. A QR code provides a scan-based alternative; it does not depend on the nearby Share Password prompt.
How to see or copy a saved Wi‑Fi password
- Open the Passwords app.
- Tap Wi‑Fi, then select the network.
- Tap the Password field to reveal the saved password.
- Tap Copy Password if you need to send it or enter it on a device that cannot use the Apple sharing flow.
Use manual entry as a fallback when the prompt is not working or the recipient cannot use the Apple-device flow.

Why isn’t Share Password showing up?
Check the conditions that make the prompt possible, then try again:
- Verify that your iPhone is unlocked and connected to the exact network the recipient selected.
- Turn on Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth on both devices, and bring them closer together.
- Confirm that both people are signed in to Apple Accounts and have each other’s Apple Account email address or phone number saved in Contacts.
- Turn off Personal Hotspot on either device if it is enabled.
- Install the latest available iOS, iPadOS, or macOS updates on both devices, as Apple recommends.
- Restart both devices and retry. Apple includes restarting among its troubleshooting recommendations in its Wi‑Fi sharing support article.
If the prompt still does not appear, use the network QR code or copy the password from the Passwords app and enter it manually.

Wi‑Fi password sharing is not Personal Hotspot
Sharing a Wi‑Fi password gives another device access to a Wi‑Fi network. Personal Hotspot shares your iPhone’s cellular internet connection instead. Apple says an iPhone cannot join a Wi‑Fi network and then rebroadcast that joined network to another device through Personal Hotspot. See Apple’s guide to sharing an iPhone internet connection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How Apple describes the security of password sharing
Apple says its devices use a mechanism similar to AirDrop to send the password. The requesting device advertises a request over Bluetooth Low Energy; the person sharing must have the requester’s contact information, and the requester proves identity through a process similar to AirDrop before the passcode is sent. Apple also says organizations can restrict Wi‑Fi password sharing on devices or apps managed through a device management service. This is Apple’s description of the mechanism, not a guarantee that sharing is risk-free. Details are in Apple’s Wi‑Fi password sharing security documentation.
