Self-hosting can make hobby media easier to organize and share with friends, but the evidence here supports one clear category—not a verified list of five hobbies. Media libraries are a useful example: projects such as Jellyfin and K7 let you run a server for movies, shows, and music. The software may be free to download; the computer, storage, power, internet connection, and time to maintain it are separate costs.

What self-hosting changes for a hobby group

Self-hosting means running a service on a system you control rather than relying entirely on a service hosted by someone else. For a group of friends, that can provide a shared place to access media or other hobby material. It also means someone in the group takes responsibility for the server and its ongoing operation.

The title suggests five hobbies, but the available evidence does not establish a reliable five-item list. It supports media sharing directly and includes an anecdotal community example about cooking; that is not enough to claim a definitive set of hobbies or recommend a tool for each one.

Media sharing is a well-supported example

Jellyfin for a personal media library

Jellyfin describes its software as a free-software media system for collecting, managing, and streaming media from a server you run. Its official site lists movies, shows, music, live TV and DVR, books, and photos. Jellyfin states that “The Jellyfin server and official clients are free to download, now and always.” That statement covers downloads, not the hardware or operating costs of running a server.

K7 for a small circle of friends

K7 describes itself as a self-hosted media server for a small circle of family and friends. Its project repository lists movies, TV series, and music, along with local authentication, optional two-factor authentication, guest mode, and federation between instances. These are project descriptions, not independently tested findings.

The available information does not establish which project is easier to set up, more secure, or better suited to a particular group. Check each project’s current documentation and supported clients before choosing.

What “free” does—and does not—mean

Free and open-source software can remove a software-download charge, but it does not make self-hosting cost-free. A server needs a computer, storage for the media, electricity, and an internet connection. Someone also has to configure it, manage access, and keep it operating. The evidence does not establish a minimum computer specification or show that dedicated hardware is required.

An existing computer may be enough for a particular household and workload. A mini PC home server is another possible setup, but no specific model or performance threshold is established here; consider one only if your needs justify an always-on machine.

How to decide whether a self-hosted tool fits

  • Start with the actual hobby. Identify what the group wants to share, then confirm that a project supports those materials and use cases.
  • Check friend access. Look for the controls your group needs, such as individual accounts or guest access. K7 lists local authentication, optional two-factor authentication, and guest mode as project features.
  • Plan who will host and maintain it. Decide whose system will run the service and who will handle administration and ongoing costs.
  • Verify current details. Features, setup requirements, and client support should be checked in the project’s own documentation before you rely on them.

A community discussion asks, “What self hosted tools do you use for your hobbies?” and includes examples involving media sharing and cooking. Treat that as a prompt for ideas, not evidence that a particular tool is broadly popular or effective.
