The Shanling UA6 II is a compact, USB-powered DAC/headphone amplifier with a 3.5mm single-ended output, a 4.4mm balanced output, a small screen, and published support for high-resolution PCM and native DSD. Its headline addition over the original UA6 is an eight-chip DAC array, but it also drops the older model’s internal battery. Whether that is an upgrade for you depends on your headphones, preference for onboard controls, and whether USB-powered use fits your setup.

What the Shanling UA6 II is

The UA6 II is a portable USB DAC/amp: it connects to a source over USB-C and provides wired headphone outputs. Shanling describes it as a solid-state member of its UA line. Its 0.95-inch screen and onboard controls let you adjust settings on the device rather than relying entirely on a companion app.

Shanling announced the UA6 II with an MSRP of $209 or €219 and said it was shipping to distributors. Those are launch terms, not a guarantee of current stock or pricing in every country. Shanling’s announcement has the manufacturer’s product overview.

Specifications and what they mean

Feature Published detail Practical meaning
DAC chips Eight Cirrus Logic CS43131 chips, according to Shanling and Audiophonics A prominent design specification; chip count alone does not establish audible quality.
Headphone outputs 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced Supports common wired connections. Use the output that matches your headphone cable; balanced is not automatically better for every listener.
Rated output at 32Ω 107mW from 3.5mm and 365mW from 4.4mm balanced, listed by Audiophonics These are published ratings at a specific impedance, not a guarantee of suitable volume or headroom with every headphone.
Digital audio support PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz and native DSD512, according to Shanling and Audiophonics The source device, playback software, and connection also affect which formats can be used.
Display 0.95-inch screen, described as OLED by the Japanese distributor announcement Provides a compact on-device interface.
USB and modes USB-C input; UAC 1.0 and UAC 2.0 settings are listed by MUSIN UAC 1.0 can be useful with some older or compatibility-sensitive hosts; check the current device instructions for setup.
Dimensions and weight 62 × 30 × 13.5mm and approximately 33g, per MUSIN; Audiophonics lists 30.8g Listings differ slightly on weight, so treat it as a very light, compact unit rather than an exact reconciled figure.

The output ratings do not by themselves determine headphone compatibility. Sensitivity, impedance, selected gain, connection, and desired listening level all matter. If you have demanding headphones, check the manufacturer’s guidance and evaluate the actual combination rather than inferring performance from the 32Ω figures alone.

How it compares with the original UA6

The clearest trade-off is power architecture. Mobileaudiophile’s July 25, 2026 review reports that the original UA6 has four CS43131 chips and a 220mAh internal battery, while the UA6 II has eight chips, a volume wheel, and no internal battery. The UA6 II is USB-powered, so it draws power from its connected source rather than operating from its own battery.

Decision point UA6 II Original UA6
DAC array Eight CS43131 chips, per Shanling and Audiophonics Four CS43131 chips, as reported in Mobileaudiophile’s review
Power architecture USB-powered; no internal battery, corroborated by the indexed Headfonia review excerpt 220mAh internal battery, as reported by Mobileaudiophile
Controls noted in the comparison Volume wheel and onboard screen Mobileaudiophile’s comparison does not identify the same wheel-equipped control layout
Observed prices in the review About $209 at the time of Mobileaudiophile’s review About $159 at the time of Mobileaudiophile’s review

The prices above are historical observations in one review, not current quotes or a like-for-like price guarantee. Mobileaudiophile characterizes the UA6 II as more controlled and refined in its listening comparisons, while suggesting the original UA6 may offer stronger value depending on priorities. Those are the reviewer’s subjective impressions, not controlled measurements or a universal consensus. The Headfonia excerpt is indexed text rather than a directly accessible full review, so its details should be treated cautiously.

How it sounds: keep the review impressions in context

Mobileaudiophile describes the UA6 II as clean, detailed, close to neutral, and somewhat warm, and reports improved separation and control compared with the UA6. These are that reviewer’s listening judgments. They do not establish a measured frequency response, prove that every listener will hear the same differences, or predict how the device will pair with a particular headphone.

For a useful personal comparison, keep the headphones, source, track, and listening level consistent. Pay attention to whether the UA6 II’s output level and controls solve a real need for you; a subjective description such as “detailed” is not a substitute for checking fit with your own setup.

UA6 II versus Shanling H0

In Mobileaudiophile’s comparison, the H0 is described as more powerful and more desktop-oriented, while the UA6 II is the smaller, more portable option. The review’s sound preferences remain subjective. Choose between them based on the physical setup, headphone power requirements, connectivity, price, and whether you value the UA6 II’s screen and wheel—not on a blanket claim that one is universally better.

Who is most likely to benefit

  • Listeners who need both common output types: the 3.5mm and 4.4mm jacks offer flexibility across compatible wired headphones and cables.
  • People who want physical controls: the display and volume wheel make direct adjustment part of the appeal.
  • Users who can power a DAC from their source: its USB-powered design is a reasonable fit when an internal battery is not a requirement.
  • Original-UA6 owners considering an upgrade: the extra DAC chips, screen-and-wheel control emphasis, and the reviewer’s positive comparative impressions may matter, but the price premium and loss of battery operation should be weighed against actual use.

It may be a poor fit if you specifically need a DAC/amp with its own battery, if your source cannot conveniently power a USB device, or if the published output ratings do not suit your headphones. The available specifications do not establish universal headphone compatibility.

Firmware and setup notes

Shanling’s UA6 II support page lists firmware V1.0.1. Its notes include wheel-light brightness adjustment, automatic background-color behavior tied to sampling rate for specified themes, and theme changes. The published update instructions use a Windows .exe updater and warn against disconnecting the device during the update.

  1. Open Shanling’s UA6 II support page and check that its current firmware and instructions apply to your unit.
  2. Follow the manufacturer’s Windows updater steps exactly; the published method uses an .exe file.
  3. Keep the UA6 II connected throughout the process. Shanling warns not to disconnect it during updating.

What to check before choosing it

  • Which connection your headphones use: 3.5mm single-ended, 4.4mm balanced, or both.
  • Whether the published power at your headphone’s impedance and sensitivity is likely to meet your needs.
  • Whether USB-powered operation works for your source, or whether an internal battery is important.
  • Whether a screen, wheel, gain settings, and onboard options are useful enough to justify the price difference from the original UA6.
  • Whether a quoted price, color, and accessory bundle are current in your country.
