Shalom Home is an Android launcher ROCI built for his grandfather after icons and a call shortcut kept moving or disappearing from the home screen. It replaces a changeable layout with large, fixed app and contact tiles, adds a PIN-protected setup area, and lets the user ask by voice to call a contact or open an app. The project is a family-built solution, not an independently evaluated accessibility product.
Why ROCI built Shalom Home
The immediate problem was accidental home-screen changes: long presses and swipes could move icons or make a call shortcut disappear. For someone who relies on a familiar layout, even small changes can make a phone frustrating to use. ROCI’s design aims to keep everyday choices visible and stable rather than asking his grandfather to manage a conventional, flexible launcher.
The account is a first-person description of a project made for one person’s needs. It does not establish that the launcher has been tested with a broader group or formally assessed for accessibility.

Large tiles and protected setup
The primary page uses large, fixed tiles for apps and contacts. A PIN-protected setup area keeps configuration separate from the everyday interface, reducing the chance of changing the layout while using the phone normally. Setup is described as available in Hebrew and English.

A second page for shortcuts and widgets
A second page holds selected direct-dial shortcuts and widgets. That allows those functions to be available without crowding the main page or requiring the user to find them among a conventional grid of icons.
ROCI’s account also illustrates why launcher behavior can differ between an emulator and an actual handset. On a Samsung Galaxy, the widget picker crashed when widgets were grouped by app name; changing the grouping to package name addressed that issue. The phone also reported that the default home app lacked shortcut permission, so the launcher added a fallback that opens the Contacts shortcut screen. These fixes show that device-specific behavior affected this project, but do not establish compatibility across Android devices.

What happens when someone makes a voice request
Voice actions are intended to make common tasks—such as calling a contact or opening an app—available without navigating through the home screen. ROCI describes a local processing flow with a quick matching path for clear requests and a language model for less clear ones.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Speech is transcribed. The app uses Whisper small through whisper.cpp to turn microphone input into text.
- Clear requests are matched first. A fuzzy Hebrew keyword matcher looks for a recognizable request.
- Unclear requests go to a model. When the keyword matcher cannot resolve the request, the app uses Gemma 3 1B through llama.cpp. The author says the model is constrained to return a known contact or app identifier, or “none.”
- The user gets a chance to cancel. Before an action, the interface announces it and shows a three-second countdown with a large cancel control.
ROCI added an initial yes-or-no request check after the model once interpreted “what time is it?” as an action. This is a developer-described safeguard, not proof that the system cannot misunderstand a request or make an unwanted call. The countdown and cancel control are part of the described interaction; users should still be shown how to review or stop an action before relying on it.

How fast it was in the author’s tests
ROCI reports that on his test emulator, keyword-matched requests took about one second, while requests handled by Gemma took 2 to 6 seconds. He also says that shortening the audio context reduced transcription of a two-second command from 25 to 45 seconds to about one second on that emulator. These are anecdotal developer results, not controlled benchmarks or a guarantee of performance on a particular phone.
For test phrases, the author generated Hebrew and French speech with neural text-to-speech and ran it through the pipeline using a fake contact named “Michal” in test mode. He gives examples where the matcher or Gemma selected the intended test action, and a small-talk phrase that was ignored after the request check was added. This describes a limited project test, not a comprehensive evaluation of accents, languages, background noise, or real-world use.

What the author says about offline use and privacy
The app is described as a Kotlin and Jetpack Compose project with native wrappers for whisper.cpp and llama.cpp. ROCI reports that the Whisper small model download is 190MB and the four-bit Gemma 3 1B download is 800MB; both are downloaded once during setup and run on the phone’s CPU. The author says the app needs no internet connection after setup and that voice and contacts stay on the device. In his words, “His voice and his contacts never leave the device, and nothing needs an internet connection after setup.” This is the author’s description of the implementation, not an independent privacy audit.

What Shalom Home does—and does not—establish
- It addresses a specific usability problem: keeping important app and contact actions visible while making accidental layout changes less likely.
- It offers a voice route for selected tasks: transcription and request handling are described as local after setup, with a confirmation countdown before an action.
- Its reported tests are limited: the author describes generated Hebrew and French phrases, emulator timings, and fixes prompted by a Samsung Galaxy.
- It is not a proven universal solution: the account does not provide an independent accessibility evaluation, broad device compatibility results, or independent verification of privacy claims.
