There is no universally better stock among Shalby, Apollo Hospitals and Rainbow Children’s Medicare. Apollo is the strongest fit for investors prioritising scale, diversification and a comparatively well-documented balance sheet. Rainbow offers the clearest specialist exposure to paediatrics, maternity and obstetrics/gynecology. Shalby is the smaller, more concentrated orthopaedic-led business, where a successful expansion can produce faster growth but also creates greater concentration risk.
The investment decision still depends on the price paid. The operating figures below establish each company’s profile, but a buy decision requires a same-day comparison of share price, market capitalisation, P/E or EV/EBITDA, occupancy, ARPOB, new beds, margins, leverage and cash conversion.
Quick answer: which investor does each stock suit?
| Investor priority | Best initial fit | Why | Main issue to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scale and diversification | Apollo Hospitals | Its FY2025 operating footprint and revenue are substantially larger than the other two companies’ disclosed figures. | Whether the market multiple already prices in that quality and scale. |
| Paediatric, maternity and obstetrics/gynecology specialisation | Rainbow Children’s Medicare | Its stated segment is the business of running multi-specialty pediatric and obstetrics and gynecology hospitals. | Whether specialist demand, occupancy and pricing remain strong as capacity expands. |
| Smaller-base growth and orthopaedic focus | Shalby | FY25 consolidated revenue was reported at ₹1,086.96 crore, up 16.4% from FY24. | Concentration, execution at new facilities and the cash cost of growth. |
| Lower balance-sheet uncertainty | Apollo as a reference point | Apollo reported a FY2025 debt-equity ratio of 0.26. | Group debt, leases, acquisitions and project spending over subsequent periods. |
This is a starting framework, not a price target. A smaller company can deliver a higher shareholder return than a larger one if its earnings grow faster and the entry valuation is reasonable. Conversely, a specialist or fast-growing operator can be an expensive investment when its multiple assumes years of flawless execution.

Apollo Hospitals: the diversified platform
Apollo’s FY2024-25 annual report provides the broadest verified operating picture in this comparison. It reported 8,025 operating beds within 10,187 total beds, 68% occupancy, consolidated revenue of ₹217,940 million and consolidated EBITDA of ₹30,219 million. The network recorded 604 thousand discharges and 7.3 million outpatients. Those figures describe a large, multi-service healthcare platform rather than a single-specialty chain.

Scale can spread fixed costs across more hospitals, specialties and patients. It can also support a wider referral network and make investments in technology, clinicians and tertiary-care capability easier to fund. The trade-off is complexity: a group with many businesses and locations can have uneven performance, different regional economics and a less transparent connection between a strong division and consolidated earnings.
Rainbow Children’s Medicare: a focused paediatric and women’s-health operator
NSE describes Rainbow’s business segment as “the business of running multi-specialty pediatric and obstetrics and gynecology hospital.” That wording makes Rainbow the most focused specialty exposure in the group. Its economic drivers are therefore more closely tied to paediatric care, neonatal services, maternity and women’s health than to a broad adult-care portfolio.
Medical Buyer’s 2025 summary reported FY25 revenue of ₹489.80 crore, an increase of 14.2% year over year. The figure is useful for establishing recent scale and growth, but it is not directly comparable with Apollo’s consolidated revenue unless the accounting scope, fiscal period and business mix are aligned. Investors should read Rainbow’s latest filing for occupancy, operating beds, ARPOB, case mix, margin and cash-flow detail before drawing a valuation conclusion.

Shalby: a smaller, concentrated, orthopaedic-led thesis
Shalby has an orthopaedic-led identity and a smaller footprint than Apollo. Medical Buyer’s FY25 industry summary reported consolidated revenue of ₹1,086.96 crore, up 16.4% from ₹934 crore in FY24. That growth rate is an important starting point for a smaller-base thesis, but revenue growth alone does not show whether returns are improving. The next checks are occupancy, revenue per occupied bed, procedure mix, EBITDA margin, working capital and the amount of capital required to add beds.
Concentration can be an advantage when a hospital has strong clinical reputation and repeatable specialist pathways. It can also magnify local competition, surgeon dependence, reimbursement changes or a weak launch at one facility. Shalby therefore requires more facility-level diligence than a simple comparison of headline revenue growth.

Operating scale and the right way to compare the numbers
The following table places the verified figures side by side. It deliberately does not convert older or differently scoped data into a false current comparison.
| Metric | Apollo Hospitals | Rainbow Children’s Medicare | Shalby | Period or qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Operating beds | 8,025 | Not stated in the verified FY25 summary | Not stated in the verified FY25 summary | Apollo FY2025 annual report |
| Total beds | 10,187 | Not stated | Not stated | Apollo FY2025 annual report |
| Occupancy | 68% | Not stated | Not stated | Apollo FY2025 annual report |
| Consolidated revenue | ₹217,940 million | ₹489.80 crore | ₹1,086.96 crore | Apollo FY2025 annual report; Rainbow and Shalby FY25 summaries |
| Consolidated EBITDA | ₹30,219 million | Not stated | Not stated | Apollo FY2025 annual report |

| Outpatients | 7.3 million | Not stated | Not stated | Apollo FY2025 annual report |
| Debt-equity ratio | 0.26 | Not stated | Not stated | Apollo FY2025 annual report |
Revenue is reported in different units above: ₹217,940 million equals ₹21,794 crore, while the other figures are already expressed in crore. Even after unit conversion, revenue is not a complete measure of operating quality. A hospital can grow sales through new beds while occupancy and cash generation lag, or maintain revenue with a profitable, high-acuity case mix.
Historical capacity context, not current capacity
Axis Capital’s FY2021 peer table recorded Rainbow at 14 hospitals and 1,475 beds, versus Shalby at 11 hospitals and 2,012 beds. FY2021 ARPOB was ₹40.9 thousand for Rainbow and ₹27.4 thousand for Shalby. These numbers are useful historical context for the difference in reported revenue per occupied bed, but they must not be presented as current capacity or current pricing. Both companies may have changed their networks, mix and economics since that table was published.
How to judge growth beyond headline revenue
Occupancy and bed additions
Track occupied beds and new beds together. Adding capacity can depress occupancy temporarily, while a mature hospital with high occupancy may have less room to grow without expansion. Ask whether growth comes from existing hospitals, newly opened facilities, acquisitions or price increases. For each company, compare the number of operating beds at the start and end of the year, occupancy by facility, ramp-up time for new units and the capital cost per added bed.
ARPOB and case mix
Average revenue per occupied bed (ARPOB) helps separate volume from pricing and acuity. Rising ARPOB can reflect more complex procedures, better utilisation of intensive-care capacity, higher tariffs or a changing payer mix. It can also be temporary if a single high-value procedure category is unusually strong. Compare ARPOB with occupancy and clinical mix rather than treating a higher number as automatically superior.

Margins and operating leverage
Use EBITDA margin, not only EBITDA growth. A new hospital can increase revenue while lowering group margins during its ramp-up. Conversely, a mature facility may produce strong incremental margins once fixed costs are covered. Reconcile reported EBITDA with depreciation, lease costs, exceptional items and share-based compensation so that the comparison uses the same economic definitions.

Cash conversion
Hospital earnings become investable only when they turn into cash. Compare operating cash flow with EBITDA over several years, then examine receivables, advances, inventory, payables and capex. Insurer and government-payer receivables can make accounting profit look healthy while cash remains tied up. A company opening several hospitals may show weak free cash flow for a period; that can be acceptable if returns on the completed projects are demonstrably attractive, but it increases financing risk.
Balance-sheet and capital-allocation questions
Apollo’s FY2025 debt-equity ratio of 0.26 is a useful reference point, not a complete solvency analysis. Review gross debt, net debt, lease liabilities, interest coverage, maturities, guarantees and capital commitments. Hospital groups often finance expansion through a mixture of debt, leases and operating cash flow, so looking only at borrowings can understate fixed obligations.
For Rainbow and Shalby, obtain the latest balance sheets before comparing leverage with Apollo. Then ask four practical questions:
- How much of the next two years’ planned bed additions is already funded?
- Will expansion require equity issuance, additional borrowing or asset sales?
- Are new hospitals expected to reach company-level margins after a defined ramp period?
- Does management return excess cash, or is nearly all cash being reinvested?
Capital allocation matters because a hospital stock’s value depends on returns earned on each new facility, not simply on the number of beds announced.

Valuation: refresh this table on the day you invest
Prices and trading multiples change continuously. The following dated fields are not stated in the available company summaries and must be filled from synchronized NSE or BSE data before publication or investment. Do not compare a price from one date with an earnings multiple calculated from another date.
| As of 18 October 2026 | Share price | Market capitalisation | P/E | EV/EBITDA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apollo Hospitals | Not stated; refresh exchange data | Not stated; refresh exchange data | Not stated; calculate using the same trailing or forward basis | Not stated; use matching net-debt and EBITDA periods |
| Rainbow Children’s Medicare | Not stated; refresh exchange data | Not stated; refresh exchange data | Not stated; calculate using the same trailing or forward basis | Not stated; use matching net-debt and EBITDA periods |
| Shalby | Not stated; refresh exchange data | Not stated; refresh exchange data | Not stated; calculate using the same trailing or forward basis | Not stated; use matching net-debt and EBITDA periods |
Use one valuation date, one currency and one earnings definition. A trailing P/E uses the latest reported twelve-month earnings; a forward P/E depends on an explicit estimate and should be labelled as such. EV/EBITDA adds net debt and other relevant claims to equity value, which can make it more informative when companies have different leverage or lease structures.
A practical valuation test
- Record the closing price and shares outstanding on the same date for all three companies.
- Calculate market capitalisation and enterprise value using consistent treatment of cash, debt and leases.
- Use the latest twelve-month revenue, EBITDA and profit for a trailing comparison; do not mix FY2025 data for one company with a later period for another.
- Compare the multiple with a three-to-five-year growth and margin scenario rather than with a single peer average.
- Stress-test the valuation for slower occupancy ramp-up, a 200-basis-point margin decline, higher interest expense and delayed bed additions.
The key question is not “Which company has the lowest multiple?” It is “What growth, margin and return assumptions are already embedded in this multiple, and can the business plausibly deliver them?”

If you want a diversified healthcare compounder
Start with Apollo. Its verified FY2025 scale, patient volumes and operating-bed base provide the most diversified platform in this set. Diversification can reduce dependence on one specialty or city, but you still need to test segment profitability, capital intensity and valuation. A large platform is not automatically defensive if expansion, acquisitions or debt increase faster than cash generation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you want specialist exposure
Start with Rainbow. Its paediatric, maternity and obstetrics/gynecology focus gives the investment a differentiated clinical thesis. Examine birth trends in its markets, neonatal and intensive-care mix, referral relationships, clinician retention, occupancy by hospital and the pipeline of new facilities. Concentration can strengthen brand and expertise, but it also narrows the range of services that can offset a downturn in one category.

Desk wire organizer is also suitable for use in the kitchen and outdoors.
- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
If you accept more concentration for smaller-base growth
Study Shalby’s facility economics in detail. The reported 16.4% FY25 revenue growth is encouraging for a smaller operator, but the investment case needs evidence that growth is profitable and repeatable. Check orthopaedic procedure volumes, surgeon concentration, implant economics, payer mix, occupancy, ARPOB, margin progression and cash conversion. A fast-growing revenue line with weak free cash flow or persistent dilution is a different proposition from a high-return expansion model.
Risks that can invalidate the thesis
- Execution risk: New hospitals may take longer than planned to reach occupancy and break-even.
- Clinical and regulatory risk: Quality failures, licensing issues or adverse events can damage referrals and reputation.
- Pricing and payer risk: Insurer negotiations, government tariffs and package pricing can pressure ARPOB and margins.
- Talent risk: Dependence on a small number of surgeons, paediatricians, obstetricians or intensivists can limit capacity.
- Capital risk: Expansion funded with debt, leases or equity can reduce returns when projects underperform.
- Concentration risk: Specialist or regional exposure can make one market shock disproportionately important.
- Valuation risk: Even excellent operating results may not produce a good return if the purchase multiple contracts.
What to monitor after buying
Read each quarterly filing and annual report with a consistent scorecard. Record operating beds, occupancy, ARPOB, admissions or discharges, payer mix, EBITDA margin, operating cash flow, capex, net debt and the number of beds under construction. Note whether management changes the timing or cost of projects, because repeated delays can be more informative than a single quarter’s revenue growth.
For Apollo, focus on whether scale continues to translate into healthy margins and cash flow across businesses. For Rainbow, monitor whether specialist expansion preserves clinical quality and utilisation. For Shalby, pay particular attention to concentration, new-facility ramp-up and whether orthopaedic growth produces cash rather than only accounting revenue.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Verdict
Apollo is the strongest all-round starting point for an investor who values scale, diversification and a disclosed FY2025 balance-sheet reference. Rainbow is the clearest choice for a focused paediatric and women’s-health thesis. Shalby is the higher-concentration, smaller-base growth option, supported by reported FY25 revenue growth but requiring the most scrutiny of facility-level execution.
None should be selected from operating profiles alone. Fill the dated valuation table, align the earnings periods, test cash conversion and stress-test expansion assumptions. The better stock is the one whose price leaves adequate room for the operating outcome you can realistically expect—not simply the company with the largest network or fastest reported revenue growth.
