Shakhtar Donetsk CEO Serhii Palkin has described returning to the club’s home as a dream, not a scheduled move. The club has been displaced from Donetsk since 2014, and its president, Rinat Akhmetov, says the ambition is to play again at Donbass Arena in a free Ukrainian Donetsk. Neither statement sets a date or guarantees when a return will be possible.
What Palkin said about going home
Palkin’s remarks were reported by The Washington Post on May 13, 2025, in an interview about how the club operates during the war. He said: “It’s our dream one day to return back to our home.” He also cautioned that it might not happen soon: “One day, yes. Maybe it will not be tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. Maybe it will be with other players and another management someday, but we believe one day we will come back.”
The phrase “Dream of Going Home” captures that sentiment, but it is not established as Palkin’s exact wording. His verified comments express a long-term hope, not a return plan with a date, conditions, or implementation steps.

Shakhtar left Donetsk in 2014, years before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The club has since had to arrange matches in other cities in Ukraine and abroad. The reason it cannot simply resume playing at home is that the return depends on security and the ability to use its home ground—not just a decision by club management.

The club’s official 2025/26 annual report says Shakhtar has been forced to play away from home for 12 years. In that report, Akhmetov tied his own hope to a specific place and condition: “And I want all of it to happen, one day, where it should – in a free Ukrainian Donetsk, at our home ground, Donbass Arena.” His statement reinforces the club’s attachment to Donetsk, but it also makes clear that the aspiration is bound up with Ukraine’s future and the city’s status.
How the club has kept operating away from home
Moving matches and managing travel
Shakhtar’s playing arrangements have changed repeatedly. BBC Sport reported in October 2024 that the club had played Champions League home matches in six cities by that point. In May 2025, The Washington Post reported that the team was operating in Lviv and had to travel outside Ukraine for European fixtures. With Ukrainian airspace closed, some journeys were particularly burdensome. These reports describe the situation at the time of publication; they do not establish the club’s current venue.

Finding revenue without ordinary matchday conditions
In October 2024, BBC Sport reported that UEFA bonuses and player sales were major sources of revenue after the full-scale invasion. The same report described a sharp fall in sponsorship income and the loss of ordinary access to fans at matches. Those are historical conditions reported in 2024, not verified figures or a complete account of Shakhtar’s finances in 2026.
Palkin also discussed financial sustainability, new marketing approaches, and commercial soccer schools in his 2025 interview with The Washington Post. Those were strategies he described at that time; the reporting does not establish their current scale or how much revenue they generate. Shakhtar’s official 2025/26 annual-report page says the report includes revenue and taxes, but the detailed amounts are not available in the cited account, so no specific club revenue total can be stated here.

Keeping a football operation going
Displacement affects more than where a team plays. Shakhtar has had to manage changing venues, long-distance travel, security constraints, commercial pressures, and squad development while trying to preserve the club’s sporting operations. The reporting documents these pressures, but it does not provide a single figure that would capture the cost of running the club during wartime.
How Shakhtar’s situation relates to Ukraine’s economy
The club’s difficulties sit within a much larger national reconstruction challenge, but its finances should not be confused with the Ukrainian economy’s. On February 23, 2026, the World Bank Group, the Government of Ukraine, the European Commission, and the United Nations released the fifth Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment. It estimated Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction needs at almost $588 billion over the next decade, based on damage and needs assessed through December 31, 2025. The release compared that estimate with nearly three times Ukraine’s estimated nominal GDP for 2025.

That $588 billion is a national estimate of recovery and reconstruction needs—not Shakhtar’s budget, the club’s losses, or a forecast of Ukraine’s near-term economic growth. The two situations are related through the broader effects of war, including damaged infrastructure and restricted access, but they measure different things at different scales.

What a return would—and would not—mean
For Shakhtar, returning home means more than selecting Donetsk as a match venue. The club’s leadership has described the goal as playing at Donbass Arena in a free Ukrainian Donetsk. That is a statement of identity and hope, not evidence that the stadium is ready to host matches or that a return is imminent. The available statements establish the ambition; they do not specify a timetable or guarantee.
