For most emergency kits, a multi-input light with hand-crank, solar, and USB charging is the most flexible replacement for a shake flashlight. It can be topped up from an outlet before an outage, sunlight during the day, or a hand crank when no other source is available. Its internal battery also stores far more usable energy than the small storage element in a basic shake light.

Choose a simple shake flashlight only when you need a compact, low-output backup that can sit unused without a charging cable. Choose a hand-crank/solar/USB model when you need longer unattended runtime, a brighter beam, area lighting, or emergency phone charging. The figures in this guide are published specifications; the cited comparison source identifies its numbers as manufacturer claims rather than independent test results.

Quick comparison: which alternative fits your emergency plan?

Technology How it gets energy Best use Main limitation
Shake flashlight Moving the body through repeated shaking induces electricity in a small storage component. Small, no-battery backup light for a drawer, glove box, or evacuation bag. Usually modest light output and short runtime unless you keep shaking it.
Hand-crank rechargeable Turning a dynamo adds energy to an internal battery. Outages and travel when you can periodically provide manual power. The crank is normally a top-up source; stored battery capacity determines unattended runtime.
Solar rechargeable A panel replenishes an internal battery when useful light reaches it. Equipment stored where it can receive regular daylight. It cannot create night-time energy; cloudy weather, indoor placement, and short winter days slow charging.
USB rechargeable An external USB source charges the internal battery before use. Predictable preparation at home, in a vehicle, or from a power bank. It depends on having a charged USB source before the outage or trip.
Multi-input light Combines two or more of crank, solar, and USB charging. Households that want a single device with several recovery options. More parts, controls, and charging paths require more inspection than a basic shake light.

A practical kit can use both types: keep one shake light as a nearly maintenance-free backup, then use a rechargeable crank or solar model as the primary light for a room, campsite, or prolonged outage.

What a shake flashlight actually does

A shake flashlight uses linear induction. A magnet moves through a coil when you shake the housing, generating a small electrical current that is stored for later use. Because the user supplies the motion directly, the light does not need disposable cells or an electrical outlet.

The trade-off is energy. A small hand movement produces only a limited amount of electricity, so the light is designed for low output or brief periods after shaking. PATH’s 2014 rechargeable-lighting guide describes the NightStar jP as a “no-battery, shake flashlight” and lists a 15-lumen output. That is useful for locating a doorway, reading a map, or finding items in a dark car, but it is not comparable to a bright room lantern.

Shake lights have few external components and can be stored for long periods without worrying about a USB cable or a solar panel position. Their mechanism also has limits: repeated shaking is tiring, and a light that has been left untouched may need several vigorous charging motions before it reaches useful brightness. If your priority is sustained light rather than minimum size, a rechargeable alternative is usually more practical.

How the main alternatives work

Hand-crank rechargeable lights

A hand crank turns a small dynamo. Current flows while you turn the handle and is normally routed into an internal rechargeable battery. You can therefore crank briefly, stop, and use the stored energy without continuing to turn.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disaster Rally’s comparison explains the key point: “A crank is a top-up mechanism on almost every model here rather than the primary supply — the stored capacity is what determines how long the light runs unattended.” A product with a comfortable handle and a larger battery is therefore more useful during an outage than a device that advertises a crank but stores very little energy.

Crank input is valuable after a storm or during a grid failure because it does not depend on a working outlet. It is not free energy, however: every minute of runtime costs physical effort, and the dynamo cannot replenish a large battery instantly. Treat the crank as a way to extend operation or recover from an empty battery, not as a reason to ignore pre-charging.

Solar-rechargeable lights

A photovoltaic panel replenishes the internal battery when exposed to useful light. Solar charging is silent and requires no cable, making it attractive for emergency equipment kept near a window, on a balcony, or at a campsite.

Solar does not mean the light runs indefinitely. At night, operation depends entirely on energy stored earlier. Indoor light may be too weak for meaningful charging, and a panel placed behind tinted glass, under a roof, or in shade will collect less energy than the same panel in direct daylight. A model with USB or crank input gives you a recovery method when weather or location prevents solar charging.

USB-rechargeable lights

USB charging is the most predictable way to prepare a light. Charge it from a wall adapter, computer, vehicle port, or power bank while the grid is available, then keep the cable with the device. USB also lets you refill a light from another battery during an outage, provided that source has remaining energy and the correct cable.

USB alone does not solve a long emergency: once the internal battery and your power bank are empty, you need another source. That is why combination products add a crank or solar panel. Before buying, check which USB connector the light uses and whether the same port is intended for input, output, or both; those details are model-specific and should not be assumed from the presence of a USB socket.

Documented models and published specifications

The following figures are the specifications reported by the named sources. They are not a side-by-side laboratory test, and runtime will vary with brightness, battery condition, temperature, and charging conditions.

Model or example Charging inputs Published light and energy figures Other documented functions Source and date
Goal Zero Torch 500 Hand crank, solar, and USB 500 lumens; 4,400 mAh stored capacity Phone charging; flashlight and lantern functions Disaster Rally, 2026
Goal Zero Lighthouse 400 Hand crank and USB 400 lumens; 4,400 mAh stored capacity Phone charging; lantern-oriented area illumination Disaster Rally, 2026
prepareme resqLite Hand crank, solar, and USB 600 mAh lithium battery Built-in phone-charging port; compact emergency light resqme current product page
Goal Zero USB-rechargeable lantern example USB 120-lumen flashlight; stated runtime 7–170 hours depending on brightness Brightness-dependent operation Goal Zero current accessories page
NightStar jP Shake-generated power 15 lumens No-battery shake operation PATH rechargeable-lighting guide, 2014

The table shows why capacity and light output need to be considered together. A brighter setting consumes stored energy faster, while a lantern designed for low output may run much longer. The 7–170-hour range published for the USB lantern example is a brightness range, not a promise that every setting will deliver the same illumination.

Stored energy, runtime, and the meaning of mAh

Milliamp-hours (mAh) describe a battery’s charge capacity under its specified conditions; they do not by themselves tell you how many hours a light will run. Runtime also depends on the LED’s power draw, the selected brightness, conversion losses, battery age, and the way a manufacturer defines the end of useful light.

Use capacity as a rough indicator of how much reserve a rechargeable light has, then look for a stated runtime at the brightness you intend to use. If a listing gives only a capacity number, do not turn it into an exact runtime calculation. A crank can add energy while you operate it, but the battery is what lets the light remain on while your hands are occupied.

For emergency planning, estimate your need in periods rather than a single headline number. Decide how many hours you need a light for navigation, cooking, or monitoring, choose the lowest brightness that performs that task, and reserve a separate device for reading or room lighting. Keeping a rechargeable light at a moderate setting preserves energy for the hours when you cannot recharge.

Beam, lantern coverage, and lumen claims

Lumens measure total visible light output, not how far a beam reaches or how evenly a room is illuminated. A focused flashlight can send a relatively narrow beam down a path, while a diffused lantern spreads light across walls and work surfaces. Two products with similar lumen ratings can therefore feel very different in use.

The Goal Zero Torch 500 is the better fit among the documented models when you want one device to switch between a directional flashlight and broader lantern use. The Lighthouse 400 is oriented toward area lighting, so it makes more sense for a table, tent, or room than for projecting a tight beam at a distant object. The small NightStar jP example illustrates the opposite end of the range: adequate for close, low-output tasks but not a substitute for a room lantern.

When comparing an unfamiliar model, look for separate descriptions of beam modes, diffusion, and brightness levels. A single maximum-lumen figure may describe a short boost mode rather than the setting you can sustain for many hours.

Can these lights charge a phone?

Some emergency lights include a USB output that can provide a limited phone charge. The Torch 500, Lighthouse 400, and resqLite are documented as having phone-charging capability. That feature can be valuable for an emergency call or a short message, but it competes with lighting for the same stored energy.

Think of phone charging as an emergency reserve, not a replacement for a dedicated power bank. A phone battery may hold more energy than a compact light can spare after conversion losses, and the published specifications above do not state how many phone charges each model can deliver. Keep the light charged, lower its brightness while charging a phone, and disconnect the phone once you have enough power for the immediate task.

Check the output connector and any operating instructions before relying on the feature. A charging port may be intended only for a particular cable or may require the light to be switched on. Never assume that a USB input also functions as an output.

Which type should you choose?

Choose a simple shake flashlight for a tiny, low-maintenance backup

Select a shake model when size, simplicity, and independence from batteries matter more than brightness. It is suitable for a glove box, bedside drawer, or evacuation pouch where you want a light that can be activated after long storage. Accept its low output and the effort required to recharge it by motion.

Choose a multi-input light for uncertain outages

A device with crank, solar, and USB inputs offers the broadest recovery plan. Charge it by USB before a storm, place it in daylight when conditions permit, and use the crank when both the grid and a reliable solar window are unavailable. The Torch 500 and resqLite are the documented examples that combine all three inputs, but they serve different size and output priorities.

Choose a lantern when the task is room or campsite lighting

Use a lantern-oriented design when several people must see a table, stairs, or work area. Diffusion reduces harsh shadows and avoids aiming a narrow beam continuously. The Lighthouse 400 is the documented model aimed at this use, while a flashlight-focused design is more convenient for searching or walking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose USB rechargeability when preparation is predictable

If you can reliably charge equipment before travel or an expected outage, USB offers the least physical effort and the most repeatable routine. Add a power bank or vehicle charging option if you need to operate away from outlets. A solar or crank input is useful insurance when that preparation may fail.

Choose compactness over output for a personal carry light

The resqLite is specified at 133 × 52 × 32 millimetres and 100 grams, with a 600 mAh lithium battery and three charging paths. Those dimensions and weight favor a personal emergency kit, while a larger, higher-output lantern is more suitable as shared household equipment. Decide whether one person or an entire room is the intended user before trading portability for capacity.

How to prepare an emergency light before an outage

  1. Charge by USB first. Use the supplied or specified cable and a known-good USB power source. Allow the charge cycle to finish according to the product’s indicator or instructions.
  2. Test every operating mode. Turn on the lowest and highest brightness settings, then check flashlight, lantern, SOS, or beacon modes only if the model documents them. Confirm that controls are understandable in darkness.
  3. Test the crank. Turn the handle briefly and verify that the charging indicator or light responds. Do not force a stiff mechanism; a damaged gear or handle can remove your only off-grid charging path.
  4. Expose the solar panel under realistic conditions. Place the device where it will actually be stored, such as a window ledge or shelf, and confirm that the panel is not covered by packaging or dust.
  5. Check phone output separately. Use a spare cable and confirm that the light recognizes a phone before an emergency. Disconnect after testing so the light does not slowly drain its battery.
  6. Store the cable and light together. Keep them dry, accessible, and away from heat. A light buried in a box or stored with a dead power bank is not ready equipment.
  7. Record the inspection date. A simple label or household checklist prevents rechargeable devices from being forgotten for years.

Maintenance and failure troubleshooting

The light is dim after storage

Recharge it by USB if available, then try the crank for a short top-up. Clean the lens and solar panel with a soft, dry cloth. If brightness falls immediately after a full charge, the battery may have aged or the device may be limiting output at a low charge level; follow the manufacturer’s service guidance rather than opening a sealed battery compartment.

The solar panel appears to do nothing

Move the panel into direct daylight and remove protective film, dust, or a cover. Solar charging is slow in weak or indirect light, and many products do not show an obvious brightness change while charging. Use USB or the crank when you need dependable recovery instead of waiting for poor weather to improve.

The crank charges but runtime remains short

Cranking adds only a limited amount of energy per unit of effort. Reduce brightness, allow a full USB charge, and check whether the battery has been stored in extreme heat or cold. If the battery no longer holds a charge, replacing the entire unit may be safer than attempting an unsupported cell replacement.

The phone does not charge

Verify that you are using the output port rather than the charging input, try another cable, and confirm that the light has sufficient stored energy. Some phones refuse very low or unstable output, and a light may disable phone charging when its own battery reaches a protection threshold. Because output-current specifications are not provided for every model here, treat phone charging as a limited emergency function.

The resqLite has been stored for months

resqme’s instructions recommend shaking the resqLite for at least one minute each month to extend battery life. Follow that maintenance interval for this model, and use the manufacturer’s instructions for any other rechargeable light rather than applying the same schedule universally.

Evidence, specifications, and buying cautions

The published figures in this comparison should be read as specifications, not independent performance results. Disaster Rally labels its 2026 comparison “Not tested,” and the listed lumen, capacity, and feature numbers come from manufacturer information. PATH’s NightStar figure comes from a 2014 guide, so it describes that documented model and period rather than every shake flashlight sold today.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manufacturers can measure lumens, runtime, and battery capacity under different conditions. Before purchase, look for the test brightness used for runtime, whether a capacity is quoted for the cell or usable output, the charging time, the connector type, and the environmental limits. If a specification is absent, do not infer it from a similar-looking model.

Also inspect the physical design. A crank handle should fold or lock securely, a solar panel should be protected from scratches, and a lantern should stand or hang in the location where you expect to use it. A bright device that cannot be positioned safely may be less useful than a dimmer light that illuminates the task without being held.

Bottom line

A shake flashlight remains a sensible low-output backup because it needs neither disposable batteries nor an outlet. For sustained emergency lighting, however, a rechargeable model with multiple inputs is usually the stronger choice. Use USB to prepare it, solar to replenish it when daylight is available, and the crank to recover when other sources fail. Match the design to the job: a directional flashlight for movement, a diffused lantern for shared spaces, and a phone-charging port only as a carefully rationed emergency reserve.
