Use SFTP for an occasional, direct upload to an already-configured VPS. Use GitHub as the source of truth with GitHub Actions when releases need repeatable builds, tests, approvals, logs, and rollback. A practical path is to begin with a scripted SFTP release, then move to GitHub-driven deployment as your team, release frequency, or risk grows.
If you still need a Linux VPS for either workflow, Antihost VPS provides full root access on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D with NVMe storage, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port, and deployment in the USA (East), Netherlands, or Ukraine.
What is the actual difference?
SFTP and GitHub solve different parts of deployment. SFTP is a secure transport and file-placement tool: it copies files from your localhost to a remote server over SSH. GitHub is a source-control platform; when paired with GitHub Actions, it can check out a commit, build and test it on a runner, package an artifact, connect to the VPS, and execute a release procedure.
The choice is therefore not simply “which upload protocol is faster?” It is whether you need a one-time file transfer or a controlled release system around every commit.

SFTP: encrypted copying over SSH
OpenBSD’s sftp(1) manual defines SFTP as “a file transfer program, similar to ftp(1), which performs all operations over an encrypted ssh(1) transport.” It supports password or public-key authentication, interactive commands, recursive copies, put uploads, and batch files for non-interactive use.
After SSH access and a destination directory exist, a typical SFTP release looks like this:
- Build the application on localhost.
- Connect to the VPS with an SSH key.
- Upload the build output to a remote staging directory.
- Run any server-side migration or restart commands through SSH.
- Switch the application to the new files.
SFTP does not record source history, review pull requests, run tests, create an artifact from a commit, or define rollback semantics. You must add those practices yourself with naming conventions, backups, release directories, and scripts.

With GitHub-based deployment, a commit in the repository identifies exactly what is being released. A workflow can run on a push, tag, or manual approval; check out that commit; install dependencies; run tests and a production build; transfer the resulting artifact to the VPS; and invoke a release script.
GitHub Actions jobs run on hosted or self-hosted runners. GitHub defines a self-hosted runner as “a system that you deploy and manage to execute jobs from GitHub Actions on GitHub.” A self-hosted runner gives you control over hardware, operating system, and installed tools, but you are responsible for patching and maintaining that machine and its runner software.
Quick decision: which should you use?
| Situation | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One person, infrequent releases, small or static site | SFTP | Shortest setup once SSH and the destination directory work; the build can remain local. |
| Several contributors or frequent releases | GitHub Actions | Commits, reviews, tests, logs, and a consistent release procedure are captured centrally. |
| Production must be rebuilt identically | GitHub Actions | The workflow builds from a known commit on a controlled runner instead of relying on an individual laptop. |
| Emergency one-off file replacement | SFTP | A direct upload can be faster than changing a pipeline, provided the change is documented afterward. |
| Auditable approvals and reliable rollback | GitHub Actions with release directories | A commit identifies the release and the server can retain previous artifacts for a deliberate switch-back. |
| Strictly isolated private infrastructure | Either, often SFTP or a self-hosted runner | Choose based on whether you want minimal machinery or an automated workflow; both still require SSH controls. |
GitHub Actions is not automatically “too much” for a single VPS. It becomes worthwhile when repeating the same manual steps is creating errors, when a second person needs to deploy, or when you need evidence of what reached production. For a tiny site that changes once a month, a batch SFTP script may be the more reliable engineering decision.

Deploying from localhost with SFTP
Prerequisites and account design
- A VPS reachable over SSH and a destination directory owned by a dedicated deployment user.
- An SSH key pair stored outside the repository. Prefer a key restricted to deployment rather than a personal administrator key.
- A local build command that produces a clearly defined directory such as
dist/orbuild/. - A separate SSH command or release script for tasks SFTP cannot perform, such as restarting a service or changing a symlink.
Do not use the root account for routine uploads. Grant the deployment account access only to the application paths and commands it needs. Keep secrets, private keys, and production environment files out of the repository and out of the uploaded build unless the application explicitly requires them.
First, test the SSH connection
ssh -i ~/.ssh/myapp_deploy deploy@vps.example "mkdir -p /srv/myapp/staging"
Replace the host, user, and path with your values. Confirm that host-key verification succeeds and that the account can write only where intended. If this command fails, fix DNS, firewall rules, the SSH port, account permissions, or the key before troubleshooting SFTP.
Interactive upload
sftp -i ~/.ssh/myapp_deploy deploy@vps.example
cd /srv/myapp/staging
put -r dist/*
Recursive transfers copy directory contents but do not follow symbolic links. Verify that your build output contains real files rather than links to paths that exist only on your laptop. Interactive mode is useful for a first deployment, but it is easy to omit a file or type the wrong destination during a hurried release.
Repeatable batch upload
Put the SFTP commands in a file outside version control if it contains sensitive paths or options. A minimal batch file is:
cd /srv/myapp/staging
put -r dist/*
Run it from the project directory:
sftp -b deploy.sftp -i ~/.ssh/myapp_deploy deploy@vps.example
Build first, check the output, and stop on an upload error. A batch file makes the copy repeatable, but it is still only a transfer; it does not prove that tests passed or that the remote tree exactly matches the intended release.

/srv/myapp/releases/2026-10-15-1430. - Upload the complete build into that directory.
- Check ownership, permissions, and required files.
- Point a stable symlink such as
/srv/myapp/currentto the new directory with a single server-side rename or symlink replacement operation. - Restart or reload the application only after the switch, if the application requires it.
Keep at least one known-good previous release. If the new version fails health checks, switch the symlink back and investigate without re-uploading an older build from memory. The exact switch command depends on your service manager and filesystem layout; test it on a non-production directory first.
Building a GitHub-driven deployment
Choose the runner model
| Runner | What you manage | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub-hosted runner | Workflow files, secrets, and deployment target; the temporary build machine is provided for the job. | Builds and tests that can run outside your VPS. |
| Self-hosted runner on the VPS or private network | Operating system, installed tools, runner service, patching, access controls, and network connectivity. | Private dependencies or tooling that cannot run on a hosted runner. |
For a self-hosted runner, GitHub requires the runner application to be installed and active, and the host must reach GitHub over HTTPS. GitHub states that self-hosted runners should be used only with private repositories. A runner executes workflow code on the machine, so an untrusted pull request in a public repository can become a server compromise if it is allowed to run there.
Self-hosted runner limits to plan for
- GitHub documents a minimum network speed of 70 kilobits per second for self-hosted-runner communication (2026 documentation).
- If no matching self-hosted runner becomes available, a queued job can fail after 24 hours (GitHub documentation, 2026).
- The automatically generated token used to configure a self-hosted runner lasts one hour; generate and use it during setup rather than saving it for later.
- When automatic runner updates are disabled, GitHub provides a 30-day update window; after that, GitHub may stop queueing jobs for the outdated runner.
These limits are operational requirements, not performance promises. A slow or intermittently connected runner can still make a workflow unreliable even when it meets the minimum network figure.

Workflow stages
Separate the workflow into stages so a failed test cannot accidentally deploy:
- Checkout: obtain the commit that triggered the workflow. Pin third-party actions to reviewed versions or commit IDs according to your security policy.
- Install: use a lockfile and a repeatable runtime setup.
- Test: run unit, integration, lint, and security checks appropriate to the application.
- Build: produce a clean artifact directory. Do not copy a developer’s untracked files.
- Transfer: connect with a deployment key or a narrowly scoped mechanism and upload to a new release directory.
- Activate: run a server-side script that validates the files, switches the release pointer, and reloads the service.
- Verify: perform a health check and mark the job failed if the endpoint or process is unhealthy.
The exact SSH or SFTP action is a project choice. Review its maintenance, permissions, and handling of host keys before adopting it; a shell-based implementation is also possible when you control the runner image.
Keep deployment credentials out of Git
- Store private keys, host information, and other sensitive values in GitHub encrypted secrets or an equivalent secret manager.
- Mask secrets in logs and never echo them for debugging.
- Use a deployment key restricted to the target account and paths.
- Rotate keys on a schedule and immediately after suspected exposure or staff changes.
- Pin the VPS host key so a man-in-the-middle warning cannot be bypassed silently.
- Require reviews or protected environments before production jobs can use production secrets.
GitHub recommends least privilege, secret masking, and rotation. A self-hosted runner increases the blast radius because workflow code runs directly on the machine; isolate it from unrelated services and avoid placing sensitive administrator credentials on it.

Repeatability, rollback, and failure behavior
Source of truth
In an SFTP process, the source of truth may be a laptop, a zip file, or an informal checklist. If the laptop is lost or the build is not reproducible, you may be unable to identify exactly what is running. GitHub deployments tie the artifact to a commit, author, review, and workflow log. That identity is valuable even when the final transfer still uses SFTP.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Rollback
SFTP has no built-in application rollback. Add one by retaining dated release directories, recording the commit or build identifier in each directory, and switching a stable symlink back to the previous release. GitHub makes the desired version easier to identify, but the server still needs retained artifacts or a mechanism to redeploy a previous commit. Git history alone is not a rollback if dependencies, environment variables, database migrations, or generated assets have changed.
Interrupted transfers
An interrupted direct upload can leave an incomplete live tree. Staging plus an atomic switch prevents users from seeing that partial state. A workflow should use the same pattern: transfer to an unused release directory, validate it, then activate it once. Never treat a green upload step as proof that the application is healthy.
Workflow-specific failures
GitHub adds failure modes that SFTP does not have: a runner can be offline, a job can wait in a queue, a dependency registry can be unavailable, or a workflow can fail before it reaches the VPS. Make these states visible in job logs and alerts. Do not automatically retry a deployment that might have completed the server-side switch; make the activation script idempotent and record the active release identifier.
Security comparison
| Control | SFTP-only process | GitHub-driven process |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication | SSH key or password; prefer a dedicated key and account. | SSH credentials still reach the VPS, plus GitHub access and workflow permissions. |
| Least privilege | Restrict the account to upload paths and required commands. | Apply those restrictions and limit which branches, environments, and workflows can use secrets. |
| Audit trail | Must be created with logs, naming, and a release record. | Commit, review, workflow, and deployment logs provide a stronger default trail. |
| Execution risk | Commands run from an operator’s machine. | Workflow code runs on a hosted or self-hosted runner; untrusted code must not reach production secrets. |
| Secret exposure | Keys can leak through a laptop, shell history, or copied scripts. | Encrypted secrets and masking help, but logs and runner files still require care. |
Costs, maintenance, and team impact
SFTP has little platform overhead. You maintain SSH access, the deployment account, the local build environment, and a release checklist. That simplicity is an advantage for a small application, but it places discipline on the operator: testing, approvals, backups, and rollback are manual unless you script them.
GitHub Actions shifts work into configuration and maintenance. You must maintain workflow files, action versions, secrets, runner images, and the server-side release script. Self-hosted runners require operating-system updates and runner updates; disabling automatic updates creates the 30-day servicing constraint described above. In return, each release can follow the same tested path and produce a record that teammates can inspect.

For a single VPS, start with the smallest process that eliminates your current failure. If the recurring problem is “I forget which files changed,” add a batch script and release directories. If it is “we cannot tell who deployed what,” move the source of truth to GitHub. If it is “a bad build reaches production,” require CI tests and an artifact-producing workflow before activation.
A migration path from SFTP to GitHub
- Standardize the local build. Document one command and one output directory. Remove generated caches and local configuration from the artifact.
- Create a dedicated deployment account. Restrict SSH access and test the account with a staging directory.
- Script the current SFTP release. Add a batch file, dated release directories, an activation script, and a health check. Record the source commit manually during this phase.
- Put the application in a private Git repository. Add a lockfile, environment-variable documentation, and branch protection appropriate to your team.
- Reproduce the build on a runner. Run tests and generate the same artifact without relying on files from a developer’s machine.
- Move transfer credentials into protected secrets. Keep the server-side activation script unchanged at first so the transport changes before the release semantics do.
- Add approvals and rollback evidence. Require a production approval where appropriate, retain previous releases, and make the workflow report the active commit or artifact identifier.
- Retire direct production uploads. Keep emergency access documented and audited, but make the normal path the workflow.
This staged approach avoids a risky “big bang” migration. You can gain repeatability while continuing to use the same VPS layout and release switch.
Common mistakes and fixes
Uploading source instead of a production build
Symptom: the server contains development dependencies, source maps, or files that only work on the laptop. Fix: define the build output explicitly and upload only that directory. Build on the runner when reproducibility matters.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Deploying into the live directory
Symptom: users see missing assets or mixed application versions during an upload. Fix: upload to a new release directory and switch a symlink or equivalent pointer atomically.
Using root credentials in automation
Symptom: a stolen key grants control over the entire VPS. Fix: create a non-root deployment account, restrict its paths and commands, and use a separate administrative channel for server maintenance.
Running untrusted pull requests on a self-hosted runner
Symptom: contributor-controlled workflow code can read files or credentials on the runner. Fix: keep self-hosted runners for private repositories and trusted workflows, isolate the machine, and do not expose production secrets to pull-request jobs.
Assuming a successful transfer means a successful release
Symptom: SFTP or the transfer step reports success, but the service fails after activation. Fix: run server-side validation and an application health check, and keep a previous release ready for a pointer switch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLeaving old releases forever
Symptom: disk space fills with dated directories. Fix: define a retention policy, such as keeping the active release and a tested number of previous releases, and remove older directories only after confirming rollback requirements.
Recommended patterns by project size
| Project profile | Recommended pattern | Minimum safeguards |
|---|---|---|
| Personal static site, occasional edits | Local build plus SFTP batch upload | Dedicated account, SSH key, staging directory, manual health check. |
| Small application, one maintainer, weekly releases | Git repository with a manually triggered workflow or a scripted SFTP release tied to a commit | Tests before upload, dated releases, atomic activation, documented rollback. |
| Team application with regular production changes | GitHub Actions building from protected branches and deploying an immutable artifact | Protected secrets, reviews, environment approval, health check, retained releases. |
| Private network or specialized build tools | GitHub workflow on an isolated self-hosted runner | Private repository, runner patching, network egress control, no untrusted jobs, least-privilege SSH. |
Bottom line for “SFTP or GitHub?”
Choose SFTP when the job is simply to place a known build on a ready VPS and a manual release is acceptable. Make it safer with a dedicated account, batch mode, staging, atomic activation, and retained releases. Choose GitHub with Actions when the release must be reproducible from a commit, tested before transfer, reviewable by a team, and recoverable through an explicit rollback process. For many projects, the right answer is sequential: make SFTP disciplined first, then let GitHub automate the same release contract when manual work becomes the risk.
