A small form-factor pluggable (SFP) is a compact transceiver or cable module that fits a compatible networking-equipment port. “SFP” identifies a form factor and interface family, not one universal speed or link type: compatibility depends on the host port and the specific module.
What does SFP stand for?
SFP stands for small form-factor pluggable. It describes a compact module designed to plug into a compatible port on equipment such as a network switch or router. Depending on the module, the connection can use copper or optical media.
The SFP name alone does not tell you the supported data rate, cable, connector, optical reach, or whether the module will work in a particular device. NVIDIA describes SFP as a transceiver or cable with one or two lanes in each direction; the actual application depends on the module and host.
How do SFP, SFP+, and SFP28 differ?
These are related members of the pluggable-interface family, but their labels do not mean that every module or port is interchangeable. SNIA lists separate specification documents for SFP and SFP+ products. NVIDIA’s guide describes SFP+ as a 10–14 Gb/s product family and SFP28 as a 25–28 Gb/s family; those are the guide’s descriptions, not a substitute for the specific port and module specifications.
#1 Best Overall
- 10GBASE-SR SFP+ to LC Optical 10 Gigabit Ethernet Fiber transceiver module, 10GbE Multimode SFP+(compatible with both 62.5um and 50um LC cables; supports OM1/OM2/OM3/OM4 fiber cables), Duplex LC connector, 850nm, DDM, up to 300m.
- [Wide Compatibility] Compatible with Cisco SFP-10G-SR, Meraki MA-SFP-10GB-SR, Ubiquiti UniFi UF-MM-10G, Fortinet, Mikrotik, Netgear, D-Link, Supermicro, TP-Link and Other Open Switches.
- [Easy to Use] Easy installation, plug and play, fully hot-pluggable with ESD protection. Widely used in network switch, server, or NIC with SFP+ to a 10 Gigabit fiber channel network with multimode LC for Network Attached Storage(NAS), Storage Area Network(SAN), and High Performance Computing(HPC) applications.
- [Durable & Low Power Consumption] Adopt high quality alloy, the shell is strong and wear-resistant; Low power consumption(less than 1.05watt) and low EMI emission design. SFP MSA Compliant, IEEE 802.3ae Compliant. Operating Temperature: 0°C to 70°C.
- [What you Get] 2x 100% tested 10GBase-SR modules, 3-Year warranty and lifetime tech support.
Check the equipment documentation for the exact supported form factors, signaling rates, and modules. A shared physical resemblance or family name is not enough to establish compatibility.
Where are the SFP specifications defined?
SNIA’s SFF specification catalog identifies INF-8074, “SFP (Small Formfactor Pluggable) Transceiver,” and lists separate SFP+ documents, including SFF-8431 and SFF-8402. NVIDIA’s cable and connector guide points to public MSA specifications for details such as pinouts, memory registers, and mechanical dimensions. For implementation and compatibility, use the applicable specification alongside the documentation for the specific device.

- Data Rate: 10G
- Interface: RJ-45
- Cable Type: CAT.6a/CAT7
- Reach: up to 30 meters (PLEASE NOTE this 10GBase-T SFP+ transceiver may get hot when it's working, because it's built with the latest IC: Marvell AQR113C. We suggest to use this product in places where the ambient temperature is below 50°C.)
- Wide Compatibility - for Cisco, Fortinet, Netgear, D-Link, TP-Link, Linksys, Broadcom, Edge-core, EMC, F5, Meraki, Norkia, QTC, Supermicro, and Other Open Switches. (Not compatible with HP-ProCurve, HP-H3C, HP-Aruba, Intel, Arista, Mellanox, Dell Force10, Extreme, Brocade, Juniper). For Ubiquiti devices, we recommend this transceiver: ASIN B094N9YKN9.
How to check whether an SFP module will work
- Identify the host. Record the exact switch, router, or other equipment model and the specification for the port you intend to use.
- Confirm the supported module family and rate. Check the host documentation for supported form factors, signaling rates, and any module qualification or vendor-coding requirements.
- Choose the medium. Establish whether the connection is electrical/copper or optical, then select a module intended for that link.
- For an optical link, match both ends and the cable. Check the transceiver types at each end, fiber type, connector, and required reach. NVIDIA notes that optical patch-cable choice depends on the transceivers.
- Verify the complete link against device documentation. The module’s SFP-family label by itself cannot confirm compatibility or reach.
Without the equipment model and port specification, it is not possible to say responsibly whether a particular SFP module will work in your switch.
