For most Samsung refrigerators, start at 38°F (3°C) for the refrigerator and -2°F (-19°C) for the freezer in US and Canadian guidance. Samsung UK recommends +3°C for the fridge and -18°C for the freezer when ambient temperature is 25°C. These are starting recommendations, not universal settings: check your model’s manual and use the control method that matches your panel.
Choose a starting temperature for your region
Samsung’s recommended setpoints vary slightly by region. They are appliance settings; food-safety limits are separate and should not be confused with the target displayed on the refrigerator.

Identify your controls before changing the setting

Change the setting and allow it to stabilize
- Identify the model and panel. Use the model-specific manual if your controls or displayed choices do not match the descriptions above.
- Select the compartment. Use the Fridge or Freezer button, the arrows and confirmation control, or the relevant SmartThings or Fridge Manager option for your Family Hub generation.
- Choose the target. Start with the recommendation for your region unless the manual specifies otherwise.
- Give the compartment time. Samsung Canada says the interior may take up to 28 hours to stabilize after an adjustment and recommends minimizing door openings. Samsung US advises waiting 28 hours before checking again after lowering a setting if the compartment is above the cited food-storage threshold. Samsung Canada Samsung US
Check the temperature with a thermometer
The display is not necessarily a direct reading of the temperature where food sits. Samsung notes that a displayed temperature can represent an average and that compartments have warmer and cooler zones. If you want to check conditions, Samsung recommends placing a thermometer in a glass of water near the middle of the refrigerator compartment. For the freezer, place it between frozen packages. If the measured temperature is too warm, lower the setting and allow time for the compartment to respond before measuring again; avoid repeatedly changing it while the temperature is still settling. A refrigerator thermometer is optional—the control panel can be adjusted without buying one.
