On the Yamaha HS8, ROOM CONTROL reduces low-frequency output below 500 Hz by 0, 2, or 4 dB; HIGH TRIM adjusts high frequencies by ±2 dB. These switches shape the monitor’s response, but they do not measure your room or correct its acoustics. Start with ROOM CONTROL at 0 dB, then compare settings from your listening position using familiar audio.
What ROOM CONTROL does on the HS8
Yamaha describes ROOM CONTROL as a way to attenuate exaggerated low end that can occur when monitors are placed close to walls. The HS8 offers three choices: 0 dB, -2 dB, and -4 dB below 500 Hz. The 0 dB setting applies no cut; the other positions progressively reduce that part of the response. Yamaha’s HS Series feature description explains the intended use, while its HS8 specifications list the control range.
The control changes the monitor’s output; it does not identify a room problem, target a specific resonance, or guarantee that bass buildup will disappear. Yamaha’s cited product pages do not prescribe a universal setting or a required distance from a wall. Placement, the room, and the listening position all affect what sounds balanced.

The following is a practical listening method, not a Yamaha-prescribed calibration procedure. Make one change at a time so you can tell what the switch changes.

- Set ROOM CONTROL to 0 dB as a neutral starting point. Use your usual speaker placement and sit in your normal listening position.
- Play familiar material with low-frequency content at a comfortable, consistent volume. Listen for whether bass seems disproportionately heavy or muddy, rather than assuming that a small room or desk automatically calls for a cut.
- If the low end seems exaggerated, switch to -2 dB and listen again from the same position. Compare with the original setting using the same passage.
- If needed, compare -4 dB in the same way. Keep the setting that gives you the most useful balance for your listening—not simply the one that sounds leanest.
If a setting improves one seat but makes another sound worse, that can reflect differences in what each position hears; the switch is not room-wide correction. A stubborn uneven bass response may call for attention to speaker and listening-position placement or room acoustics, rather than a stronger switch setting alone.
What HIGH TRIM changes
HIGH TRIM adjusts the high-frequency response by ±2 dB. It is a modest tonal adjustment, separate from ROOM CONTROL’s low-frequency attenuation. Yamaha describes it as flexible control of high-frequency response; it is not an automatic calibration system. Yamaha’s feature page describes both switches.

For a useful comparison, leave ROOM CONTROL unchanged while assessing HIGH TRIM. Use familiar material and listen from your normal position. Changing both controls at once makes it harder to identify which adjustment helped. The cited specifications establish the adjustment range, but do not recommend one HIGH TRIM setting for every room or recording.
What the HS8 specifications tell you—and what they do not
The HS8 is a two-way, bass-reflex, bi-amplified nearfield monitor with an 8-inch cone woofer and a 1-inch dome tweeter. Yamaha lists 75 W for the low-frequency driver and 45 W for the high-frequency driver, for 120 W total amplification. Its inputs are balanced or unbalanced XLR and TRS. Yamaha’s specifications give its frequency response as 38 Hz–30 kHz at -10 dB and 47 Hz–24 kHz at -3 dB. The tolerance belongs to each range: these figures do not promise the same bass response in every room.

The HS8S is an optional, separate powered subwoofer, not a requirement for using the HS8. Yamaha lists an 8-inch cone, 150 W, and a frequency range of 22 Hz–160 Hz at -10 dB. It includes level, phase, high-cut, and low-cut controls. Yamaha’s HS Series specifications provide those figures.

Consider a subwoofer only if you need additional low-frequency extension or output. The published range alone cannot establish how it will integrate with HS8 monitors in a particular room; the combined system still depends on placement and adjustment.
