To set up an Xbox, connect it to an HDMI-capable TV or monitor and broadband internet, turn it on, then follow the console prompts or use the Xbox app on iOS or Android. You’ll need a Microsoft account for online setup and account-linked features. Check the box before buying a cable: the Series X|S package may already include one.
What do you need to connect an Xbox to your TV?
Xbox lists four basic setup needs: the console, a Microsoft account, broadband internet, and an HDMI-capable TV. Have your account sign-in details ready. Check the package contents before buying accessories; Xbox’s Series X|S setup guide lists an HDMI cable in the box for both models.
- Display: An HDMI-capable television or monitor.
- Internet: Broadband access, through Wi-Fi or a wired connection.
- Account: A Microsoft account for online setup and account-linked experiences.
- Power: The console’s power connection and a suitable outlet.
How do I set up my Xbox?
1. Connect the console to the display and internet
Use the included instructions to connect the console to an HDMI-capable TV or monitor and to your home network. You can use Wi-Fi or a wired broadband connection if your router is reachable by cable. The sources do not establish that one option is always faster or more reliable; choose based on your home network and connection options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Turn on the console and begin setup
Power on the console. Xbox says the startup process begins the console update. Follow the on-screen prompts to continue setup and sign in with your Microsoft account when asked.

3. Complete setup on the console or with the app
While the console updates, Xbox recommends downloading the Xbox app for iOS or Android. The app can help complete setup, but it is optional: you can also follow the setup flow on the console. App screens and console prompts can change, so use the current instructions shown on your device.
Does an Xbox need internet to set up?
For initial online setup, downloads, mandatory updates, and some features, broadband internet and a Microsoft account are required, according to Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S manual for the US and Canada, published around the consoles’ 2020 launch. That manual gives a figure of 1.5 Mbps download and 768 Kbps upload. Treat it as a manual-era requirement, not a current universal recommendation for broadband performance.

For an audio/video receiver passthrough setup, Xbox’s 2020 TV guidance specifies Ultra High Speed HDMI for Series X, and High Speed HDMI or HDMI Premium for Series S, between the console, receiver, and TV. Check every link in the chain: a supported picture mode depends on the connected equipment, not just the console. Do not assume that a 4K or 120Hz mode will work without verifying the capabilities of both the display and the full connection path.
What if you run out of Xbox storage?
Extra storage is not part of the basic connection process. Xbox identifies three ways to make room or add capacity:
Rank #4
- Experience the next generation in entertainment with the Microsoft Xbox One games console
- Powerful hardware provides stunning, true-to-life graphics
- Play with millions of other gamers across the web with Xbox Live
- Jump seamlessly between your favourite game, TV show or movie
- Includes a Wireless Controller
- Uninstall games you no longer use: This frees space without buying an accessory.
- Attach an external hard drive: Consider this if you want additional storage and have checked compatibility for your needs.
- Add a Series X|S storage expansion card: This is another optional capacity choice for these models.
Choose based on how much space you need and which games or content you want to keep installed. You do not need to buy an expansion card just to set up the console.

Where to get help if setup does not finish
If the display stays blank, the network connection fails, sign-in does not work, or an update stalls, consult Xbox Support for current, model-specific troubleshooting. Menu labels and repair steps can change with console software, so avoid relying on button sequences that may not match your console.
