To set up basic voicemail on a Samsung Galaxy, open the Phone app and touch and hold 1. Follow the prompts from your carrier to initialize the mailbox. Visual voicemail is a separate, carrier- and device-dependent way to view messages in an app or phone interface.
Set up basic voicemail on a Samsung Galaxy
-
Open the Samsung Phone app.
-
Open the keypad, then touch and hold 1 to call the voicemail setup system. Samsung’s voicemail setup instructions describe this as the first-time setup route.
-
Follow your carrier’s prompts to initialize the mailbox. Depending on the carrier, you may be asked to create a PIN, record a greeting, or choose other mailbox settings. The exact prompts and PIN requirements vary; there is no single setup sequence that applies to every carrier.

If holding 1 does not start setup, check your carrier’s voicemail app or support instructions. App names and icons vary by carrier. For later access, use the voicemail shortcut in Phone or call the voicemail system as your carrier directs. For example, Verizon says its customers can dial *86 from their mobile device to hear and manage voicemail.

Basic voicemail and visual voicemail are different
Basic voicemail is a mailbox you reach by calling the carrier’s voicemail system. Visual voicemail provides a screen or app for viewing and selecting messages rather than listening to them in sequence. Whether it appears on your Galaxy depends on the carrier, device, software, and account.
| Option | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Basic voicemail | Call into the carrier mailbox to listen to and manage messages. | Initialize the mailbox through the carrier’s prompts; ask the carrier about PIN resets, greetings, and mailbox rules. |
| Visual voicemail | View messages in a compatible app or phone interface and select which to play. | Confirm carrier, account-plan, device, and software eligibility. The carrier may direct you to its own voicemail app. |
Samsung notes that the voicemail app name and icon can differ by carrier. Visual voicemail in Google Phone may also be turned off when a carrier voicemail app is in use, because Google says the two can conflict. See Google Phone’s voicemail guidance if you use that app.

Why visual voicemail may be missing
-
Check line and plan eligibility. Visual voicemail may require a supported plan as well as a compatible phone. AT&T, for instance, says its service requires a compatible Android smartphone and an AT&T Wireless or Prepaid voice plan that includes Visual Voicemail. Its support page states that AT&T Visual Voicemail can store up to 40 messages for 30 days; that limit applies to AT&T’s service, not Android voicemail generally. Check AT&T’s current Visual Voicemail requirements.

Look for the carrier’s voicemail app. Your carrier may provide a separate app or instructions for enabling the feature. Samsung says availability and app labels can vary by carrier.

-
Ask the carrier about account setup. If the mailbox will not activate, or you need to reset a PIN or change a greeting, follow your carrier’s current instructions. These settings and recovery steps are carrier-specific.

Verizon publishes Samsung-specific Basic Visual Voicemail setup guidance and says customers can dial *86 to hear and manage voicemail. Confirm with Verizon whether visual voicemail is supported for your particular line and device.
Samsung Direct voicemail is a separate feature
Samsung also documents Direct voicemail, which is not the universal setup route for carrier voicemail. According to Samsung’s US support page, Direct voicemail is available only on Galaxy devices running Android 16 with One UI 8.5 or higher. The phone must be on and connected to the mobile network for it to work, and it does not work for video calls. If your phone or software does not meet those conditions, use the carrier voicemail options available for your line.
