To develop for an ESP32 in VS Code, install Espressif’s ESP-IDF extension, use its ESP-IDF Installation Manager (EIM) to install ESP-IDF and its tools, select that setup for your workspace, and run ESP-IDF: Doctor Command to check the configuration. You can install and configure the software without a board; a board and a compatible USB data cable are needed when you are ready to flash and monitor hardware.
What you need before installing ESP-IDF
Install Visual Studio Code on a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer, then add Espressif’s ESP-IDF extension from the Extensions view. Follow the extension’s current operating-system prerequisites, particularly on macOS and Linux; its installation overview says Windows requires no additional prerequisites. Exact tool versions and prerequisite packages can change, so use Espressif’s live documentation rather than an old package list or a version number copied from a past guide.
On macOS or Linux, review Espressif’s extension prerequisite instructions before proceeding. The extension’s README describes installation across supported platforms.

For later hardware work, Espressif lists an ESP32 board, a USB cable, and a computer running Windows, Linux, or macOS as requirements. Check the connector on your particular board: some use USB Type-C, while the ESP32-DevKitC V4 guide specifies a USB 2.0 Standard-A to Micro-B cable. On that V4 board, the Micro-USB interface supplies power and supports communication with the computer. Those connector details are specific to that model, not every ESP32 board.

Install ESP-IDF and its tools through EIM
- In VS Code, open the Command Palette and run ESP-IDF: Open ESP-IDF Installation Manager.
- In the ESP-IDF Installation Manager, install ESP-IDF and the associated tools. Choose from the setup options the manager presents; the available/current versions are determined by Espressif’s installer and live documentation, not by a fixed version number in this guide.
- Wait for installation to finish, then run ESP-IDF: Select Current ESP-IDF Version and choose the setup you installed. The extension saves the selection in workspace state and configures the environment needed for that workspace.
Espressif documents this extension-led setup in its ESP-IDF extension installation guide. EIM-installed setups are normally detected through eim_idf.json. If that file is outside its default location, set idf.eimIdfJsonPath to its location.

- Dual-Core Performance Up to 240 MHz: Run sensor processing, wireless communication, automation logic and connected-device tasks on a 32-bit dual-core ESP32 platform designed for responsive embedded and IoT projects
- Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2: Connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks or use Bluetooth Classic and BLE for wireless sensors, smart devices, remote controls, home automation and other connected projects
- Flexible Power-Saving Modes: ESP32 power-management features support dynamic clock scaling and low-power operating modes, helping developers reduce energy use in compatible sensing, monitoring and connected-device applications, suitable for battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
- USB-C Programming with CP2102: Connect through USB-C for power, sketch uploads and serial monitoring, while GPIO, UART, SPI and I2C interfaces support sensors, displays, motor drivers and other modules (USB-C cable not included)
- Over-the-Air Update Support: Configure OTA functionality through a compatible ESP-32 software framework to update deployed firmware over Wi-Fi without reconnecting the board by USB for every revision
Verify the configuration before creating a project
Run ESP-IDF: Doctor Command from the Command Palette and review the configuration report. Espressif’s FAQ uses the question “How do I know if the ESP-IDF extension is installed correctly?” and points to this command as the check. If the report indicates that a tool or setup is unavailable, confirm that EIM completed and that the intended installation is selected for the current workspace.

Espressif states that environment variables take precedence over the setup selected in the extension. If you intend to use the selected EIM setup, remove conflicting manual values and run the Doctor command again. See the ESP-IDF extension FAQ.

Create a project and choose its ESP32 target
- Use the extension’s project workflow to create a project from an ESP-IDF example or select its sample/template for a blank project.
- Run ESP-IDF: Set Espressif Device Target and choose the target that matches your intended ESP32 device and project. Do not assume every ESP32-family chip uses the same target.
- Open ESP-IDF: SDK Configuration Editor to adjust project settings. Save configuration changes before building.
Espressif’s extension project tutorial covers project creation and configuration. The selected target is a project setting; match it to the chip or board the project is meant to support.
Build, flash, and monitor a physical board
Once a project is configured, use the extension’s build, flash, and monitor workflows. For hardware, connect the board using a cable that fits its connector and supports data, then select the serial port corresponding to the board. The exact port name and device-handling steps vary by board and operating system, so use the board’s documentation if the port is not obvious.

Installing ESP-IDF and building a project are software tasks; flashing and monitoring require a connected board. Before purchasing hardware, verify the ESP32 variant or target your project requires and the board’s connector. A compatible development board and data cable are only needed for hands-on hardware work, not for installing VS Code or ESP-IDF.

Remote and older-version considerations
In remote or headless VS Code contexts—including SSH, WSL, Dev Containers, Codespaces, and browser-based VS Code—the extension uses the EIM wizard rather than the graphical installer. Follow the relevant host prerequisites for the system where the toolchain will run; a remote workspace does not eliminate those requirements.

For ESP-IDF versions earlier than 5.0, Espressif notes that spaces are unsupported in configured paths. This is a legacy, version-specific constraint, not a blanket rule for current ESP-IDF installations. Consult the current installation guide for details.
