You can usually set up a new Wi-Fi router with a phone if its maker provides a setup app; a computer browser is another option on many models. Connect the modem or incoming Ethernet line to the router’s WAN/Internet port, join the router’s default Wi-Fi, then follow the model-specific setup flow to enter any ISP settings and choose a Wi-Fi name, password, and supported security mode.

Before you begin: identify your internet connection

First work out what is providing the internet connection. A separate modem converts the incoming service line to Ethernet so a router can connect to it. In that arrangement, connect the modem’s Ethernet output to the router’s WAN/Internet port. If your internet arrives through an Ethernet wall jack, connect that line to the router’s WAN/Internet port instead. Google explains the modem-to-router arrangement in its modem and router guidance.

If you already have a modem/router gateway and are adding another router, the new router may not be optimally positioned in the network until the gateway is configured to work with it. The appropriate arrangement depends on the devices and service; check the gateway and router instructions before changing settings.

Gather the details and equipment

  • Check the router label or manual for its default Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and key, supported app, WAN/Internet port, and initial setup method. NETGEAR notes that app availability depends on the product; its setup instructions use the network details printed on the router.
  • Have your ISP account details available. Some services require a connection type or credentials. TP-Link’s guide describes Dynamic IP, PPPoE, and Static IP, and says to ask the ISP if you do not know which applies. Some providers also require ISP-specific VLAN settings.
  • Keep the router powered and within range while you connect to its initial Wi-Fi. If you have a separate modem, use an Ethernet cable between it and the router; there is no universal cable-category requirement established for this setup.

Can you set up a router without a computer?

Often, yes: use the router maker’s app on a phone when the specific model supports it. NETGEAR documents setup through its Nighthawk app, and TP-Link offers its Tether app. App names, availability, and steps vary by model. If the router does not support an app—or you prefer not to use one—many models provide a local browser-based management interface. Follow the exact instructions for your router rather than assuming a universal app, login, or web address.

  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Set up the router wirelessly, step by step

  1. Connect the internet line. With a separate modem, connect an Ethernet cable from the modem to the router’s WAN/Internet port. TP-Link advises powering down the modem while making the connection, then powering it on and waiting for it to restart before powering on the router. Follow your model’s manual if its order differs. With an Ethernet wall jack, connect the incoming line to the WAN/Internet port.
  2. Join the router’s initial Wi-Fi. On your phone or computer, select the default SSID and enter the network key printed on the router label. Confirm you joined the new router’s network, not a nearby or existing Wi-Fi network.
  3. Open the supported setup method. Start the maker’s setup app, or open a browser and use the router’s documented local management address if that method is supported. NETGEAR describes the web interface as an alternative to app setup on supported products; TP-Link’s router setup guide covers its browser flow.
  4. Enter the ISP connection details if requested. Select the connection type specified by your provider and enter any required credentials or provider-specific settings. Do not guess between Dynamic IP, PPPoE, or Static IP. Ask the ISP if you are unsure, or if the connection requires VLAN configuration.
  5. Name and secure the Wi-Fi network. Choose a distinctive SSID and a strong password. Some routers use one name for multiple Wi-Fi bands, while others let you configure each band separately. ASUS documents per-band settings and notes that available options can vary with firmware in its Wi-Fi settings guidance.
  6. Select a supported security mode. Use WPA2 or WPA3 where supported, and avoid WEP. NETGEAR’s security guidance recommends WPA2 or WPA3 when available. Check device compatibility: Google warns that some older WPA2 devices may have trouble when WPA3 transition mode is enabled on Google Nest Wifi or Google Wifi, as explained in its product-specific security guidance.
  7. Finish the connection check and review updates. Complete the router’s internet connection test if the setup flow provides one. Review its firmware update setting and use the manufacturer’s supported update process; TP-Link’s setup flow includes an automatic-update choice.
  8. Reconnect your devices. Once the router applies the new Wi-Fi name and password, reconnect phones, computers, TVs, and other devices using those credentials. Menu names and exact steps vary by router and firmware.

Fix common setup problems

The setup app cannot find the router

  • Confirm the router is powered on and your phone is connected to the router’s setup Wi-Fi.
  • Check the model’s setup instructions for required phone permissions, such as Bluetooth or local-network access; discovery requirements are not universal.
  • If the app still cannot find it, use the manufacturer’s documented browser setup method if your model supports one.

The setup page or wizard does not open

Check that the device is connected to the new router rather than another Wi-Fi network. Use the local address documented for that router. TP-Link advises checking the connection to the router and trying its numeric local address if its friendly address does not work; its setup guide gives model-family instructions.

The router connects to Wi-Fi but has no internet

  • Reseat the cable between the modem and the router’s WAN/Internet port, and check whether the modem itself is online.
  • Verify the ISP connection type and any PPPoE username or password, static IP details, or other settings requested by the provider.
  • Ask the ISP whether the service needs a VLAN or another provider-specific configuration.

Devices disconnect or cannot join after setup

Reconnect each device with the new SSID and password. If a device rejects the network after you change security settings, check that it supports the selected mode and consult the device maker. The WPA3 transition-mode compatibility warning cited above applies specifically to Google Nest Wifi and Google Wifi, not every router.

When to consider a factory reset

Do not make a factory reset the first troubleshooting step: it erases the router’s configuration. If other checks fail and a reset seems necessary, follow the procedure in the exact model’s manual; there is no single reset sequence for all routers.

What to check when choosing a router

If you still need hardware, verify that it works with your ISP and intended modem or gateway arrangement. Also check whether setup is available through an app, a browser, or both, and whether its security modes suit the devices you already own. The official setup guidance cited here does not establish current prices, comparative throughput, coverage, or a best router for a particular home, so those should not be inferred from setup instructions.
