Setting up a new or reset Pixel? Start by checking its screen lock and security tools, deciding what notifications can show on the lock screen, reviewing theft protection, and confirming Adaptive Battery is on. Menu labels and feature availability vary by Pixel model and Android version, so use these as four areas to review rather than assuming every option appears on every phone.
1. Secure the phone and make sure you can find it
Open Google’s Pixel security and privacy settings guide to review your phone’s security status, screen lock, device-finding option, and security updates. Some steps and labels may vary by device.
Use a strong screen lock
A screen lock is the foundation for several other protections. Google recommends a strong PIN of six or more digits, a complicated pattern, or a unique password. Choose a method you can use reliably while making it difficult for someone else to guess.
Check device finding and updates
Confirm that the device-finding feature is set up and that security updates are current. These checks complement the screen lock: one helps you locate or protect a missing phone, while the other keeps its software up to date.

2. Decide what your Pixel reveals on the lock screen
Open the Pixel security and privacy controls and review both app permissions and lock-screen notifications. The privacy tools include Privacy Dashboard, Permission Manager, and camera and microphone access controls. Use them to check which apps have access to sensitive information or hardware.
Choose how much notification content to show
Notification previews can be convenient, but they may reveal message details to anyone who can see your locked screen. Adjust the lock-screen notification control to match your needs: keep previews if quick visibility matters, or limit what appears if privacy matters more.

3. Turn on the theft-protection options available to your phone
On supported devices, look under Settings > Google > All services > Theft protection. Depending on the Pixel and Android version, the menu may offer Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, Failed Authentication Lock, Remote Lock, or Identity Check. Google notes that availability varies by model, so an option missing from your phone may simply not be supported there.

Google says a screen lock is required to turn on theft-protection features. Remote Lock also requires an active SIM, a verified phone number, Find Hub, and an internet connection. Android version requirements differ among features; some instructions apply only to Android 15 and later. Check Google’s theft-protection guidance for the requirements that apply to your device.

4. Check that Adaptive Battery remains on
Google recommends keeping Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled. Adaptive Battery learns how you use apps and adjusts their background activity. Google says it may take a few weeks after setting up or resetting a phone to work effectively, so do not judge its behavior immediately. It is already on when users get a phone, according to Google’s Pixel battery guidance; check that it remains enabled rather than treating it as a setting everyone must newly switch on.
