To automatically delete old messages and their attachments from your iPad, go to Settings > Apps > Messages, then set Keep Messages to 30 Days. Apple says items older than the selected period are removed on an ongoing basis.
Set messages to delete automatically after 30 days
- Open Settings on your iPad.
- Tap Apps, then tap Messages.
- Scroll to Keep Messages under Message History.
- Choose 30 Days.
Apple’s iPad User Guide describes this setting as deleting messages and attachments older than 30 days or one year “on an ongoing basis.” The menu wording or placement may vary by iPadOS version; Apple’s currently surfaced iPad guide lists the path above. Apple’s iPad User Guide
Choose the retention period that fits
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| 30 Days | Automatically removes conversations and their attachments after 30 days. |
| One Year | Automatically removes conversations and their attachments after one year. |
| Forever | Does not automatically remove conversations through this setting. |
Choosing a non-Forever option applies to conversations and their attachments, not just the text of individual messages. Apple’s iPad User Guide

Understand what happens when messages are deleted
Automatic retention and manual deletion are different
Keep Messages removes older conversations and attachments automatically. When you delete messages or attachments yourself, they may remain in Recently Deleted for up to 30 days, where you can recover them or permanently delete them sooner. Apple’s iPad User Guide

Messages in iCloud can sync the deletion to your devices
If Messages in iCloud is on, deleting a message or conversation on your iPad also deletes it on your other devices where Messages in iCloud is enabled. Apple says message changes, including deletions, appear across devices set up for the service. Apple Support: Use Messages in iCloud
Deleting a message on your iPad does not delete it for recipients
Ordinary deletion affects your devices signed in to the same Apple Account; it does not change what other people see in their conversations. Deleting is not the same as using Undo Send. Apple’s iPad User Guide
