On Windows 11, change Dropbox Backup frequency from the Dropbox desktop app: click the Dropbox taskbar icon, open the account menu, choose Preferences, select Backups, then choose Set up or Manage backups. In the updated Backup experience, select 15 minutes (recommended), daily, weekly, or custom, and save or confirm the setting displayed by Dropbox.
What you need before changing the schedule
The frequency control belongs to Dropbox Backup in the full Dropbox desktop application. It is not a setting in the Dropbox web site or in Windows 11’s own backup panels.
- Use the full Dropbox desktop app. Dropbox documents desktop-app support for Windows 10 and Windows 11, except Windows S mode.
- Make sure the app is installed and running. The Dropbox icon must be available in the Windows taskbar or its notification-area overflow.
- Sign in to the Dropbox account that owns the backup. Backup availability can depend on which account is active in the desktop app.
- Expect slightly different labels. Dropbox’s current instructions show the account control as a profile photo, initials, or a person icon. The setup button can read Set up or Manage backups, depending on whether Backup is being configured for the first time.
Dropbox says Backup is available to customers on all plans. The Windows S mode exception still matters: if the computer is running S mode, the full desktop-app workflow described here is not supported.

How to change Dropbox Backup frequency in Windows 11
- Start Dropbox. Open the Dropbox desktop application and wait for its taskbar icon to appear.
- Open the Dropbox menu. Click the Dropbox icon in the Windows taskbar. If Windows has hidden it, open the notification-area overflow first.
- Open account settings. Click the round account menu. Depending on the app version and account, this appears as your profile photo, initials, or a person icon.
- Choose Preferences. This opens the Dropbox desktop-app settings window.
- Open Backups. Select the Backups tab. This is separate from settings for ordinary Dropbox file synchronization.
- Open the Backup controls. Choose Set up if computer Backup has not been configured in this account, or choose Manage backups if it is already active.
- Select an interval. In the updated Dropbox Backup experience, choose 15 minutes (recommended), daily, weekly, or custom.
- Save or confirm. Use the save, apply, or confirmation control shown by the app. Dropbox can present the final wording differently as the desktop app is updated, so follow the control displayed on your screen.
After confirmation, return to the Backups tab and check that the selected interval is shown. This verifies that you changed the Backup schedule rather than a general synchronization preference.

What the four frequency choices mean
Dropbox’s updated scheduler provides four choices. The practical differences are how soon a changed file is expected to be included in the next Backup run, how often the scheduled work occurs, and how closely the schedule fits your routine. Dropbox presents 15 minutes as the recommended interval; the other choices trade freshness for fewer scheduled runs.
| Choice | Recovery-point freshness | Network and system activity | Useful when |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 minutes (recommended) | Minimizes the normal gap between a change and its next scheduled Backup capture. | Runs the Backup schedule more often than daily or weekly choices. | You work on important files throughout the day and want a relatively current safety copy. |
| Daily | Changes may remain outside the scheduled Backup until the next daily run. | Fewer scheduled runs than the 15-minute choice. | Your files change in a predictable daily routine and an intraday copy is not essential. |
| Weekly | The largest normal gap among the standard choices. | Fewer scheduled runs, with the least frequent standard schedule. | The source folders change infrequently and a weekly routine is acceptable for your recovery needs. |
| Custom | Depends on the interval you configure in the Dropbox interface. | Depends on the custom schedule you select. | You need a cadence that does not match 15-minute, daily, or weekly scheduling. |
These are practical implications of the documented intervals, not measured speed or bandwidth benchmarks. A schedule controls when Backup integrates changes; it does not guarantee that every file change is captured at the exact instant it occurs.
Choosing the right interval for your files
Choose 15 minutes for active working folders
The recommended setting is the most suitable starting point when documents, project files, photos, or other backed-up content changes repeatedly during the day. It reduces the time that a newly changed file can exist without a scheduled Backup capture. The trade-off is more frequent scheduled activity than daily or weekly choices.

Choose daily when a once-a-day checkpoint is enough
Daily scheduling fits a routine in which files are reviewed or produced during the day and a daily safety copy is sufficient. It is also a straightforward choice when you want fewer scheduled Backup runs but do not want to wait a full week for the next normal checkpoint.
Choose weekly for slowly changing folders
Weekly scheduling is appropriate only when the folders involved change infrequently and you accept a longer possible gap between a change and its scheduled Backup. It is not the conservative choice for work that changes several times a day.
Use custom when your routine has a specific cadence
Custom scheduling is useful when the standard choices do not match your work pattern. For example, you might want a cadence aligned with a recurring review or production cycle. The exact custom values available are determined by the Dropbox interface; select the value offered in the scheduler and confirm it before closing Preferences.

Dropbox Backup is different from ordinary sync
Dropbox uses two related but different mechanisms:
- Dropbox Backup creates a safety copy of files and folders from your computer and external drives so they can be recovered.
- Dropbox sync keeps files available and updated across Dropbox locations.
Because their purposes differ, a frequency setting in Backup should not be interpreted as a universal Dropbox synchronization delay. Dropbox notes that some backup syncs show changes instantly while others integrate changes every 15 minutes. The Backup scheduler adds the explicit 15-minute, daily, weekly, and custom choices described above.
If your goal is simply to see a file updated in another Dropbox location, changing the Backup interval is the wrong control. Use the normal Dropbox synchronization status and settings for that purpose; the Backups tab controls the safety-copy workflow.
External-drive backups follow a separate timing rule
Dropbox separately documents backups of external drives. Once an external drive is connected, its Backup updates automatically every hour while the drive remains plugged in. That hourly behavior is distinct from the computer Backup schedule choices in the updated scheduler.

Do not assume that selecting 15 minutes, daily, weekly, or custom for computer Backup changes the external-drive rule. Keep the drive connected for the automatic updates Dropbox describes. If the drive is disconnected, it cannot receive those connected-drive updates until it is attached again.
How to confirm that the change took effect
- Open the Dropbox taskbar menu again.
- Open the account menu and choose Preferences.
- Return to Backups.
- Choose Manage backups if that is the label shown.
- Check that the interval displayed by the Backup scheduler matches your selection.
This check is especially useful when the account menu or setup button uses a different label than the one shown in another Dropbox help article. The visible setting in your installed app is the authoritative confirmation for that account and version.

The Dropbox icon is not visible
Confirm that the full Dropbox desktop app is installed and running. Look in Windows’ notification-area overflow if the icon is not shown beside the clock. The frequency control is exposed through the desktop app, so it will not appear in a browser-only Dropbox session.

You cannot find Preferences
Open the round account control attached to the Dropbox taskbar menu. The control can show a profile photo, initials, or a person icon. The Preferences command is inside that account menu, not necessarily on the first panel opened by clicking the taskbar icon.
The Backups tab has no Set up button
Look for Manage backups instead. Dropbox uses Set up for first-time configuration and Manage backups when Backup is already configured. Both paths lead to the Backup controls.
The Backups tab is unavailable in Windows S mode
Dropbox documents the full desktop app for Windows 10 and Windows 11 except Windows S mode. Check the Windows edition before troubleshooting the schedule itself; the documented desktop workflow does not apply in S mode.

The displayed schedule does not match what you selected
Return to Preferences > Backups and inspect the setting after saving or confirming. Make sure you changed the Backup scheduler rather than a synchronization option. If the app shows a confirmation step, complete it before closing the window.
An external drive does not update on the computer schedule
Apply the separate external-drive rule: Dropbox documents hourly automatic updates while the drive remains connected. The computer schedule choices and the connected external-drive timing should not be treated as interchangeable.
Important limits of the frequency setting
- It is a Backup schedule, not a promise of instant capture. A selected interval describes when scheduled Backup work occurs; it does not mean every edit is copied at the moment of saving.
- It does not change ordinary sync behavior. Sync and Backup serve different purposes and can expose different timing behavior.
- It does not override the external-drive cadence. Connected external drives are documented separately as updating every hour while connected.
- Labels can change with the app experience. Follow the account-menu and Backups labels shown by your installed Dropbox version.
- Support depends on the Windows mode. Windows 11 is supported for the desktop app, but Windows S mode is excluded from the documented support.
What Dropbox’s current documentation says
Dropbox Help’s Dropbox Backup: an overview, updated July 7, 2026, states: “You can schedule backups to take place on 15-minute (recommended), daily, weekly, or custom intervals.” Dropbox Help’s How to use Dropbox Backup, updated September 11, 2026, describes Dropbox Backup as a way to automatically back up files and folders from a computer and external drives to Dropbox. Those statements describe the current scheduler and its purpose; the exact appearance of the controls can still vary by account and desktop-app version.
