On a Samsung Galaxy, assign a unique call sound from the contact’s own edit screen: open Contacts, select the person, tap Edit, choose View more, tap Ringtone, pick a tone, return to the contact, and tap Save. You can use a built-in sound or, on supported models, a music file downloaded to the phone. Menu names and locations vary by Galaxy model, One UI version, region and whether the contact is stored on the phone, an account or a SIM.
What you need before changing a contact’s ringtone
The individual-ringtone feature is controlled by the contact record, not just the phone-wide ringtone setting. Before starting, check these points:
- Use the Samsung Contacts app or the contact editor available on your Galaxy. Samsung’s regional documentation shows the same general path, but the exact screens can differ by model and software version.
- Make sure the contact is stored somewhere that supports individual ringtones. A contact saved only in SIM memory may not expose the feature. If necessary, move or save that person to the phone or a supported account first.
- For a custom song, download an actual audio file to the phone. A track that exists only inside Spotify or another streaming service cannot be selected directly as a ringtone.
- Keep the file in a format your device accepts. Samsung UK’s current guidance lists MP3, WMA, AAC and FLAC, while noting that M4A files need conversion. Treat that list as UK guidance rather than a guarantee for every Galaxy model or region.
If you only want to distinguish callers with Samsung’s supplied sounds, no download or purchase is required.

Assign a built-in ringtone to one contact
This is the simplest route because the tone is already on the phone. It also avoids moving files or checking audio formats.

- Open Contacts.
- Tap the person who should have a different call sound.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap View more if the additional contact fields are collapsed.
- Find and tap Ringtone.
- Select a tone other than the current default. Depending on the interface, you may hear a preview as you tap each option.
- Return to the contact details screen and tap Save.
After saving, calls from that contact should use the selected sound while other callers continue using the phone’s normal ringtone. Samsung’s Australian instructions document this sequence for Australian-variant devices; Samsung also warns that labels and screens can change with the device and software version.
Why the Save step matters
The tone is selected inside an editable contact record. Backing out without saving can discard the assignment, just as it can discard another contact change. Always return to the contact page and tap Save, even if you changed nothing else. Reopen the contact afterward if you want to confirm that its Ringtone field still shows the chosen sound.
What this changes—and what it does not
This setting is for incoming calls from that contact. It does not automatically change the phone-wide ringtone, another person’s assigned tone, or the sound used for text messages. Those are separate settings. If several people share the same contact entry or the caller is not matched to the edited record, the phone may use the general ringtone instead.

Use your own downloaded audio file for a contact
A custom file gives you more choice, but it adds two compatibility checks: the audio must be physically present on the Galaxy and the file type must be accepted by that model.
Choose a local file from the contact editor
- Open Contacts and select the person.
- Tap Edit, then View more.
- Tap Ringtone.
- Tap the + or Add control if it appears in the ringtone picker.
- Choose the downloaded audio file. Some Galaxy interfaces open a file picker with Tracks and Folders views.
- Confirm the selection, return to the contact, and tap Save.
The plus/add control is not present on every model or software build. If you do not see it, use one of Samsung’s built-in tones or consult the manual for that exact Galaxy variant. Do not assume that a control shown in instructions for another region must appear on your phone.
Make sure the file is really on the phone
Samsung’s support guidance is explicit that a song must be downloaded to the device before it can be used. Streaming access is not the same as a local file: a catalog track playing in a streaming app cannot be selected directly. Download the file through a legitimate source, then reopen the ringtone picker.
A file copied to the phone, saved from a download, or otherwise visible in the device’s file storage is different from an offline song that remains locked inside a streaming application. The latter may play in that app but still be unavailable to Samsung’s ringtone selector.
If the picker’s Tracks list is empty, switch to Folders and browse to the directory where the file was saved. This often reveals files that are present but not indexed in the track view. Select the file from there, return to the contact and save the record.

Check the audio format
Samsung UK currently identifies MP3, WMA, AAC and FLAC as supported audio formats and says M4A files need conversion to one of those formats. That is regional support guidance, not a universal promise: codec support can vary by Galaxy model, One UI release and market. If a file is visible but cannot be selected or does not play, try a standard MP3 copy and repeat the contact-editing steps.
Changing only the filename extension does not convert the audio. Use an actual conversion to a format your model accepts, then place the converted file on the phone and open the picker again. If the converted file still fails, check the manual for your model and region rather than repeatedly selecting the same unsupported file.
Change the ringtone for every caller instead
If your goal is to replace the default ringtone for the whole phone, use the system sound settings rather than editing individual contacts:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds and vibration (some versions show Sound and vibration).
- Tap Ringtone.
- If you want a local file, tap + or Add.
- Select the audio file and tap Done.
This sets the general ringtone. It does not replace a tone that you have already assigned to a specific contact; contact-level settings are handled from that person’s record. If your intention is to identify one important caller, return to that contact’s edit screen instead of changing this system-wide setting.
Built-in default versus a phone-wide file
The same practical choice applies at the system level as at the contact level. A built-in sound requires only a selection. A local file requires that the audio be downloaded, visible to the picker and encoded in a supported format. No purchase is needed for a built-in tone, and no ringtone purchase is required when you already have a usable local file.
Built-in tone or custom file: which approach fits?
| Choice | Setup effort | Personalization | Compatibility considerations | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in Samsung tone | Select a sound in the contact’s Ringtone field and save. | Limited to sounds supplied by the phone. | No file transfer or audio-format check. | No purchase required. |
| Downloaded local audio | Obtain the file, open the contact ringtone picker, choose +/Add, select it and save. | Uses your own compatible recording or music file. | The file must be stored locally; the picker and supported formats vary by device and region. | No ringtone purchase is required if you already have a usable file. |
Choose the built-in route when reliability and speed matter most. Choose a local file when recognizing a caller by a personal recording or particular song is worth the extra file and format checks. If you are setting several contacts, built-in tones are usually quicker because you can repeat the contact-editing path without preparing a separate file for each person.
Troubleshoot a missing option or ringtone
The contact has no Ringtone field
First open the contact’s edit screen and tap View more; the field may be hidden among the additional details. If it still does not appear, check where the contact is stored and consult the manual for the exact model. Samsung documents that the interface changes across devices and software versions, so a path shown for one Galaxy cannot be assumed to exist on another.

Also make sure you are editing the actual contact record rather than viewing a search result, a duplicate entry or a contact card supplied by another app. Open the full record, choose Edit, expand the additional fields and look again. If the option is absent on that model, the built-in ringtone choices may be the only supported route.

The contact is saved on the SIM
Samsung Philippines states that individual ringtones do not work for contacts stored in SIM memory. Move or recreate the contact in the phone’s contacts storage or a supported account, then edit that new record and assign the tone. The exact move/import controls depend on the Contacts version.
After moving the record, verify that you are editing the new phone or account copy, not the original SIM entry. If both copies remain, remove or distinguish the duplicate as appropriate so an incoming call matches the record that has the ringtone assignment.
Your song is not listed
Use Folders instead of only Tracks in the picker. Confirm that the file finished downloading and is visible in a file-management app. A streaming-service entry is not a downloadable ringtone file for this purpose.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the file is visible in storage but not in either picker view, check its format and try reopening the ringtone selector after the download completes. Selecting + or Add is model-dependent, so the absence of that control may itself be a device or software limitation rather than a missing file.
The file is rejected or will not play
Check the extension and encoding. Samsung UK’s June 5, 2026 support guidance lists MP3, WMA, AAC and FLAC and recommends converting M4A to one of those formats. Because that information is UK-specific, verify the requirements for your Galaxy’s region if a converted file still fails.
A successful selection is not the same as a successful audible test. After saving, place a test call with the ringer enabled. If the phone still does not play the file, return to a built-in tone to determine whether the problem is the audio file or the contact assignment.
You see SIM 1 and SIM 2 choices
On dual-SIM devices, the ringtone screen may ask which SIM line to configure. Samsung’s UK documentation shows SIM 1/SIM 2 labels on some phones. Select the line whose incoming calls you want to change, then choose the tone. Other Galaxy variants may present the choices differently.
Read the line labels carefully before saving. A tone selected for one SIM line may not be the tone used when the call arrives on the other line. If your interface does not show SIM choices, follow the labels that appear on your specific device instead of applying the dual-SIM sequence literally.

You changed a message sound by mistake
Call ringtones and message notification sounds are separate settings in Samsung’s software. Editing the contact’s call ringtone does not automatically change its text-message alert. Configure message notifications through the messaging app or notification settings if that is the sound you meant to change.
The ringtone seems unchanged
Reopen the contact, tap Edit, expand View more and check the displayed Ringtone value. If it shows the new tone, test from another phone while the Galaxy’s ringer is enabled. A silent or vibrate state can hide an otherwise correct assignment. If the contact shows the default tone, repeat the selection and tap Save before leaving the record.
A reliable way to confirm the assignment
- Open the contact again and verify that the chosen sound is shown in its Ringtone field.
- Tap Edit and Save once more if you changed any contact details after selecting the tone.
- Place a test call to the Galaxy from another phone when practical. Test with the phone’s ringer enabled so you are checking the ringtone assignment rather than a silent or vibrate mode.
- If you used a local file, confirm that the file still exists on the phone. Removing or relocating it can make future selection or playback fail on interfaces that reference the stored file.
If the contact record shows the selected tone but an incoming call uses another sound, return to the model-specific Samsung manual. The behavior can depend on the contact’s storage location, dual-SIM configuration, software build and regional interface.

To change your choice, follow the same path: open Contacts, select the person, tap Edit, choose View more, open Ringtone, select a different sound and tap Save. Choosing another built-in tone is the simplest replacement. If the picker offers a default option, selecting it restores the phone’s general behavior for that contact; the exact label depends on the Galaxy software.
Changing the phone-wide ringtone later does not mean you must revisit every contact. Contact-level assignments are edited from the individual record, while the general ringtone is edited under Settings. Keep those two paths separate when diagnosing an unexpected sound.
Why the menus differ between Galaxy phones
Samsung publishes regional instructions rather than one identical screen flow for every device. The Australian guide, updated March 6, 2025, shows the Contacts > Edit > View more > Ringtone sequence for Australian variants. A broader Samsung support note cautions that screenshots and menus may vary by model and software version. The UK page, updated June 5, 2026, adds format and dual-SIM details that may not appear on another region’s support page. Samsung’s Philippine article about SIM contacts was updated November 23, 2022.
These dates explain why two Galaxy owners can follow the same general instructions yet see different labels. Use the sequence as a map, then match the wording on your own phone rather than forcing an option that is absent. A missing +, a different sound-menu name or a SIM selector can all reflect a regional or software variation rather than an error in your contact.
Quick decision checklist
- Need the fastest no-file solution? Pick a built-in tone from the contact’s Ringtone field.
- Want a personal song or recording? Download a compatible audio file to the phone and use +/Add if your model provides it.
- Cannot find the contact option? Expand View more, check the contact’s storage location and verify your model’s manual.
- Cannot find the file? Browse Folders, not only Tracks.
- Using a SIM-only contact? Move it to phone or supported account storage first.
- Changing every caller’s sound? Use Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone, not the individual contact editor.
- Trying to alter a text alert? Use message notification settings; they are separate from call ringtones.
- On a dual-SIM phone? Check whether the screen asks you to choose SIM 1 or SIM 2 before saving.
- File rejected? Try a supported local format such as MP3 and confirm the requirements for your region and model.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I set a custom ringtone for one contact on a Samsung Galaxy?

Can I use a Spotify song as a contact ringtone?
Not directly. Samsung says the audio must be a physical file downloaded to the device. A track available only inside Spotify or another streaming service cannot be selected by the Galaxy ringtone picker.
Why is there no Ringtone option in my contact?
Tap View more in the contact editor first. If the field is still absent, check whether the contact is stored on a SIM and consult the manual for your exact Galaxy model and software version. Samsung says menus vary across devices.
Do individual ringtones work for SIM contacts?
Samsung Philippines says they do not work for contacts stored in SIM memory. Move or recreate the contact in phone storage or a supported account, then assign the ringtone to that copy.
