To use your own audio as an Android notification sound, make the file visible to the phone’s sound picker and then select it in sound settings. On a Samsung Galaxy, the documented sequence is to copy the file into Internal storage/Notifications with My Files, then choose it under Settings > Sounds and vibration > Notification sound. On other Android phones, start with Settings > Sound & vibration > Default notification sound; the exact folder and labels depend on the manufacturer and software version. See the Android Help sound and vibration instructions and Samsung’s Galaxy-specific procedure for the official paths.

What copying a notification sound actually does

Android does not normally let the sound picker browse every location on your phone. Copying an audio file to the location recognized by the device makes that file available in the picker; selecting it is a separate step. Copying alone does not change the active notification tone.

There are two different targets:

  • Phone-wide default: one sound is used for notifications that follow the system default.
  • One app or notification category: a particular app can use a different sound, but only when that app and the phone expose the relevant control.

Menu names, folder behavior, notification categories, and available controls vary by manufacturer, model, Android release, and app. The Samsung instructions below are for Galaxy devices; they are not a universal Android file path.

Prepare the file and decide the scope

Have the audio file stored on the phone before opening settings. It may be a file you downloaded, recorded, or transferred from another device. Android Help uses an MP3 as its example when explaining how to add a sound, but the official instructions do not establish that every phone accepts every audio format.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
  • Decide whether the sound should apply to the whole phone or only one app.
  • Keep the original file until you confirm that the new tone appears and plays in the picker.
  • Use a short, recognizable clip if you need to identify notifications quickly; the official instructions do not specify a required duration.
  • If the file is on removable or cloud storage, first make a local copy that the phone’s file manager can access.

On Android 12 and later, Google notes that some of its settings steps are available as described; older releases can use different labels or locations. Do not assume that a path shown on one manufacturer’s phone exists on another.

Check the file’s location before opening Settings

A frequent mistake is trying to choose a file while it is still only an online item. Open the phone’s file manager and confirm that the audio can be opened from local storage. Downloads, a recorder folder, and a music folder are common starting points on Galaxy phones, but the visible categories depend on where the file came from. If you transferred it by cable or another device, finish that transfer first. This check separates a storage problem from a sound-setting problem.

Do not rename or delete the original while testing. The copy placed in a recognized folder is the working file, while the original gives you a fallback if you need to repeat the process or use the audio elsewhere. Android’s official guidance does not promise that every extension or encoding will be accepted, so an audio file that does not appear may reflect device compatibility as well as location.

Samsung Galaxy: copy the audio into Notifications

Samsung’s support procedure, updated October 28, 2020, uses the built-in My Files app. Follow these steps when you want a Galaxy phone-wide notification sound.

1. Locate the audio in My Files

  1. Open My Files.
  2. Browse to the location containing the audio. Samsung’s examples include Audio > Music and Internal storage > Voice Recorder.
  3. Press and hold the file until it is selected.

If you cannot see the file, return to My Files’ home screen and check the storage category where it was saved. The file must be available to My Files; an item that exists only in an online account is not yet a local file for this procedure.

2. Copy it to the Notifications folder

  1. With the file selected, tap Copy.
  2. Return to the My Files home screen.
  3. Open Internal storage.
  4. Open the Notifications folder.
  5. Tap Copy here.

This creates a copy in the location Samsung’s sound picker checks. Leave the original in its existing folder if you may need it for another purpose.

Be precise about the destination. The folder named Notifications is inside Internal storage; copying to a similarly named folder elsewhere, or leaving the file in Music, Downloads, or Voice Recorder, does not follow Samsung’s documented sequence. If the folder is not visible, return to the internal-storage list rather than creating an unrelated folder in another location.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

3. Select the copied file as the default

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Sounds and vibration.
  3. Tap Notification sound.
  4. Choose the copied audio file from the list.
  5. Return to the previous screen so the selection is applied.

The wording can differ slightly by Galaxy model or software version. If the copied file is not listed, use the troubleshooting section below before moving or deleting anything.

Confirm that you changed the intended Galaxy setting

The Galaxy notification-sound page is the phone-wide control. It changes notifications that are still using the system default, not necessarily every sound produced by every app. An app category with its own selected tone can continue using that tone after you change the default. Test with the notification or category you actually care about, rather than assuming the new file replaced all app-level choices.

Samsung Galaxy: assign a sound to one app

For a sound that applies only to one app, Samsung places the control under that app’s notification settings rather than under the phone-wide picker.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Select the app.
  4. Tap Notifications.
  5. Choose the relevant notification category.
  6. Tap Sound and select the tone.

If the category offers an Alert or Silent choice, set it to Alert when you want an audible notification. Samsung warns that not all apps expose customizable notification sounds. Some apps manage their own sounds inside the app, while others provide no per-category sound control at all.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Categories matter because one app can separate message, reminder, and other notification types. Select the category that generates the event you want to identify. Changing one category does not imply that the app’s other categories changed. If no category or sound control is shown, check the app’s own notification preferences; Samsung’s guidance does not provide a universal override for apps that do not expose the option.

Other Android phones: use the system sound picker

Google’s general Android route is:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Sound & vibration.
  3. Tap Default notification sound.
  4. Choose a sound.
  5. Tap Save, if that button appears.

This route changes the default used by notifications that have not been assigned their own tone. The exact capitalization and location may differ on phones from other manufacturers, so search Settings for notification sound or default notification sound if the displayed path does not match.

Google’s help page also describes copying an MP3 into a Ringtones folder for adding a ringtone. That is a ringtone instruction, not a universal notification-folder rule. Do not copy the Ringtones path onto a Galaxy phone when your goal is a notification tone; Samsung’s documented Galaxy path is Internal storage > Notifications.

If the general picker does not show your file

Android’s official general guidance does not define one file-manager path for every manufacturer. Open the phone’s file manager and look for a folder named Notifications, or consult that manufacturer’s support instructions. A folder name or menu available on one Android build may be absent on another. Avoid treating Samsung’s My Files sequence as a guarantee for a different brand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the system picker only after the file is local and in a location that the device recognizes. If the picker lists built-in tones but no custom files, close it, verify the file’s destination, and open it again. On a non-Galaxy phone, the manufacturer may provide an “add” control, a separate file browser, or no custom-file option in that screen; the available official instructions do not establish a single behavior for all brands.

Choose between a default tone and an app-specific tone

Choice Where you change it What it affects Availability
Phone-wide default Android: Settings > Sound & vibration > Default notification sound; Galaxy: Settings > Sounds and vibration > Notification sound Notifications that follow the system default System sound setting; labels vary by device and version
One Galaxy app category Settings > Apps > app > Notifications > category > Sound Only the selected app notification category Depends on the app exposing categories and sound controls
One app on another Android phone Look in that app’s own settings, or its notification settings in Android Only the app or category controlled there Depends on the app and Android build; no single universal menu

Set the default first when you want a consistent tone across many apps. Use an app-specific setting when you need to distinguish one service from the rest and the app provides that option.

The two scopes can coexist. You can select a custom default for general alerts and then give a supported app category a different sound. If the app-specific choice is later removed or reset, that category may fall back to the phone-wide default. Because labels and behavior differ, record which screen you changed when troubleshooting.

Troubleshoot a sound that is missing or silent

The copied file is not listed

  • On a Galaxy, return to My Files and confirm that the copy is inside Internal storage > Notifications, not merely in Music, Downloads, or Voice Recorder.
  • Close and reopen the notification-sound picker after copying. The picker may not refresh while it is already open.
  • Check that you selected the copy operation’s destination correctly and that the file is still present.
  • If you are not using a Galaxy, do not assume the Notifications folder is the correct location. Your manufacturer may use a different picker or storage rule; consult its device-specific instructions.
  • Confirm that you copied the file rather than only viewing it in a cloud service. The sound picker needs an audio item the phone can access locally.
  • If the file remains absent after the location check, try another audio file that the phone already recognizes. The official instructions do not guarantee support for every format, so do not infer that a missing file always indicates a settings error.

The sound appears but the phone remains quiet

  • Verify that you changed the intended scope. A phone-wide default does not override an app category with its own sound setting.
  • For a Galaxy app category, check whether it is set to Alert rather than Silent.
  • Check the phone’s notification volume and vibration settings in the same sound-and-vibration area.
  • Confirm that the app is allowed to send notifications. A sound setting cannot play for a notification the app is not permitted to deliver.
  • Trigger a notification from the same app or category you changed. Testing a different category can make a correct setting appear ineffective.

The app has no Sound option

Samsung explicitly notes that not all apps support customizable notification sounds. Look in the app itself for notification preferences. If neither the app nor Android exposes a sound control, the app may be limited to its built-in behavior; the official guidance does not provide a universal override.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The menus do not match the instructions

Labels change with device family and software version. On a non-Samsung phone, use Settings search for sound, notification, or vibration. On a Galaxy, start with Sounds and vibration and My Files. Samsung also cautions that screenshots and menus can vary by model and software version.

You copied the file to Ringtones by mistake

The Ringtones folder is associated with ringtone setup in Google’s example. For Galaxy notification sounds, copy the file into Internal storage > Notifications instead, then reopen the notification picker. Keeping a copy in Ringtones does not make it the active notification sound.

You changed phones or installed an update

A sound copied into one phone’s storage is not automatically registered on another phone. Repeat the copy and selection steps on the new device. An Android update can also rename menus or reorganize notification categories, so use Settings search and verify the active scope again rather than assuming an older path still applies.

A reliable workflow for any Android phone

  1. Identify the target: decide whether you need a default tone or a single-app/category tone.
  2. Find the local audio: open the phone’s file manager and verify that the file can be accessed locally.
  3. Use the manufacturer’s path: on Galaxy, copy it to Internal storage > Notifications; on other phones, follow the device’s documented storage and picker behavior.
  4. Open the correct setting: use the system default-notification setting for a broad change, or the app/category setting for a narrow change.
  5. Select and save: choose the file, tap Save where shown, and leave the settings screen.
  6. Validate the scope: check the app or category you intended to change rather than assuming every notification now uses the file.
  7. Recover methodically: if the tone is absent, verify the destination, reopen the picker, and then check device-specific or app-specific limitations.

This order prevents the most common mix-up: changing a system default when the real goal is an app category, or changing an app category while the file is still stored somewhere the picker cannot see. Make one change at a time and test the same notification type after each change.

What to expect when changing phones or Android versions

A sound copied into one phone’s storage is not automatically registered on another phone. When moving to a new device, repeat the file-copy and selection process using that device’s file manager and settings. Likewise, an Android update can rename menus or reorganize notification categories. The underlying sequence remains two-part: make the audio available, then select it at the scope you want.

Google’s Android Help page is the broad reference for the system sound setting, while Samsung’s instructions are the more precise reference for Galaxy’s My Files and Notifications-folder workflow. Neither page establishes one identical procedure for every Android manufacturer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I copy an MP3 to use as an Android notification sound?

On a Galaxy, open My Files, locate the audio, press and hold it, tap Copy, open Internal storage, open Notifications, and tap Copy here. Then go to Settings > Sounds and vibration > Notification sound and select the file. On other Android phones, use the manufacturer’s file manager and sound-picker instructions because the folder path is not universal.

Does copying the file automatically change my notification sound?

No. Copying only makes the file available to the picker. You must select it in the phone-wide notification-sound setting or in the relevant app notification category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a different sound for one app?

Often, but not always. On Galaxy, try Settings > Apps > the app > Notifications > notification category > Sound, and choose Alert rather than Silent when applicable. Samsung says some apps do not provide customizable sounds; other phones may place the control inside the app.

Why is my custom sound missing from the list?

On Galaxy, confirm that the file is inside Internal storage > Notifications, then close and reopen the picker. On another Android phone, the correct folder or picker behavior may differ. Also confirm that the audio is stored locally and that the device supports its format.

Should I copy the file to Ringtones or Notifications?

For a Galaxy notification tone, Samsung’s documented destination is Internal storage > Notifications. Google’s Ringtones example concerns adding a ringtone and should not be treated as a universal notification path.

Why is the selected sound silent?

Check that you changed the same scope that produced the notification, that a Galaxy category is set to Alert rather than Silent, and that notification volume and app notification permission are enabled. An app-specific tone can override the phone-wide default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do the steps look different on my phone?

Android menus vary by manufacturer, model, software version, and app. Search Settings for notification sound, sound, or vibration, and consult your phone maker’s instructions. The Samsung My Files and Notifications-folder sequence is Galaxy-specific.

Do I need a separate file manager or audio editor?

No separate product is established as necessary by the official procedures. Galaxy instructions use the built-in My Files app, while the sound setting is handled in Settings. A different file manager is optional, not required.

The Bottom Line

Copying a sound and selecting a sound are two separate actions. On Samsung Galaxy, place the audio in Internal storage > Notifications with My Files, then choose it under Settings > Sounds and vibration > Notification sound. For general Android, use Settings > Sound & vibration > Default notification sound, recognizing that labels and file locations vary. For a single app, use its notification category or in-app settings when available. If the file is missing or silent, verify its local destination, reopen the picker, confirm the intended scope, and check whether that app supports custom sounds.
