To keep Windows devices on one display language, deploy the language itself, apply a supported device-level UI-language policy, and separately restrict users’ access to language settings. Intune’s Language settings modification restriction blocks access to language-changing settings, but it does not choose a display language. For supported multilingual Windows 11 devices, Microsoft documents MachineUILanguageOverwrite as the policy that restricts the system UI language to the specified language.
There is no universal “bulletproof” setting for every Windows edition, build, image, and user profile. Confirm the policy’s applicability and test the full deployment path on the Windows devices your organization actually manages.
Decide what “stop language overrides” means
Several different outcomes can sound like the same requirement. Choose the control based on what users should and should not be able to do:

- Block access to language settings: Configure Intune’s Windows device restriction for Language settings modification. This restricts settings access; it does not select a display language. Microsoft’s Intune device restriction reference describes this setting.
- Set or restrict the device UI language: Use a supported machine-level UI-language policy, such as MachineUILanguageOverwrite where its Windows requirements are met. The intended language must be installed.
- Keep the language-selection interface out of sight: HideLanguageSelection can remove the selection option from the Language and Regional Options control panel, but hiding that interface does not prevent programmatic changes.
- Prevent installation of additional language packs or features: Assess RestrictLanguagePacksAndFeaturesInstall separately. It restricts installation; it is not the setting that selects the display language.
These controls address different parts of the problem. Hiding a control or blocking Settings alone should not be treated as enforcement of a particular UI language.

Check whether the target Windows devices support the policy
Microsoft documents MachineUILanguageOverwrite for Windows 11 version 21H2 and later on Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions. The policy applies to systems with more than one UI language installed. Review the TimeLanguageSettings Policy CSP for the policy’s current scope and prerequisites before assigning it.
The target language must be available on the device. According to the policy description, if the specified language is absent, selection defaults to the local administrator’s selected language. Do not assume a similarly named setting has the same applicability on every Windows release or edition.

Make the language available before enforcing it
Add the target language pack and its required components to the Windows image, or install them on devices before relying on a policy to select that language. Microsoft’s Windows image language-pack guidance explains how to service images with language packs and associated components.
Image and setup choices can affect the result. Microsoft notes that, for commercial editions of Windows 11, the language selected during OOBE becomes the System Preferred UI language while the default System UI Language set by DISM remains unaltered; Home behaves differently. See Configure International Settings in Windows and validate the behavior against your image and deployment workflow.

Configure the controls for the intended experience
- Confirm the requirement and device scope. Decide whether you need to block Settings access, enforce one UI language, restrict language-pack installation, or combine these outcomes. Identify the Windows editions, versions, and multilingual device configurations that will receive the policy.
- Provision the target language. Add the language and required components to the image or install them on devices before applying the UI-language policy.
- Apply the machine UI-language policy. Configure the applicable policy for supported devices, following the CSP’s documented scope and prerequisites. Do not treat HideLanguageSelection as the enforcement policy.
- Apply the Intune restriction if needed. Configure the Windows device restriction for Language settings modification when users should not be able to change language settings through the restricted settings experience. This remains separate from selecting the device UI language.
- Assess language-installation restrictions separately. If users must not add other language packs or features, evaluate RestrictLanguagePacksAndFeaturesInstall for the target devices.
Microsoft’s references describe these settings and their purposes; they do not establish the exact profile-building or assignment workflow for every tenant configuration. Check the current Intune interface and CSP documentation for the setting names and applicability available to your environment.

A Windows user can have a preferred UI language that differs from the device’s machine-level configuration. PowerShell’s Set-WinUILanguageOverride sets the preferred display language for the current user account; it is not a substitute for device-wide policy. - After policy sync, sign-in, and restart, check the visible Windows display language and the user’s preferred language.
- Confirm that the target language and its required components remain available.
- Test the restricted settings experience and, if configured, whether users can install language packs or features.
- Repeat on the actual Windows builds, editions, images, account types, and Intune enrollment paths in scope.
Microsoft’s documentation establishes policy behavior and relevant prerequisites, but it does not report results for a particular organization’s tenant or enrollment configuration. Treat the pilot as a necessary check of your own deployment rather than assuming one result across all profiles and devices.
