For several WordPress sites on one server, choose the boundary first: a Multisite network is efficient when the sites share administrators, code and release timing; separate WordPress installations are safer when owners, plugins, schedules or failure domains differ. Within separate installations, separate databases and database users provide stronger isolation than a single shared database.
A sound design then connects DNS, hostname routing, TLS, PHP workers, databases, storage, caching and backups as separate layers. There is no honest universal number of WordPress sites that one VPS can host. Capacity depends on traffic shape, uncached requests, plugin workload, background jobs, media processing and the resources available at each layer.
Choose the WordPress boundary before choosing the server size
The architecture decision determines who can affect whom, how updates are coordinated and how precisely you can restore a site. WordPress documents three practical patterns.
One Multisite network
Multisite uses one WordPress installation and one database to run multiple sites in a network. Core files, themes and plugins are shared. Each site has its own content tables and media-upload directory, while the user table is shared across the network.

This model suits related sites with coordinated administration: for example, a company with regional sites that should receive the same core and plugin updates. Shared code reduces duplicated maintenance and disk use. The trade-off is a larger failure and change radius. A faulty network-wide plugin update, incompatible theme or compromised administrator can affect every site, and sites cannot follow completely independent release schedules.
Independent installations with one shared database
Each site has its own WordPress files and configuration, but the installations use one database server or database with unique table prefixes. This preserves separate code and configuration while reducing database administration.
It is useful when sites need different plugin sets or deployment timing but the operator accepts a shared database failure boundary. A mistake in database permissions, a destructive maintenance operation or database outage can still affect all installations using that database service.
Independent installations with separate databases
Each site has its own files, configuration, database and database credentials. This gives the clearest tenant and failure separation and makes per-site migration or restoration straightforward. It also adds administration: more credentials, schemas, backup jobs, monitoring targets and upgrade tasks.
Separate databases are the usual choice when sites have different owners, contractual boundaries, security requirements or recovery objectives. They do not eliminate shared-server risk: a full disk, kernel failure, network outage or exhausted PHP pool can still affect every site on the host.

Do not select Multisite merely because the sites share a server. Select it when they are one operational product. If a site must be sold, transferred, restored or upgraded without negotiating with its neighbors, an independent installation is usually the cleaner boundary.

Domain-based networks and independent domains
For a domain-based Multisite network, each hostname must resolve to the server and the web server must map those hostnames to the WordPress document root. A network may use wildcard subdomains, or explicit virtual-host rules for several domains. Independent installations normally use a separate virtual host (or equivalent server block) for each domain, pointing to that site’s document root.
DNS alone does not choose a WordPress site. A record that points to the correct IP still fails if the web server’s hostname rule sends the request to a default site. Conversely, a correct virtual host cannot work when DNS points elsewhere. Plan both layers together.

Path-based networks
A path-based network keeps one hostname and addresses sites as paths such as example.com/subsite. It avoids managing multiple hostnames, but path-based URLs have different permalink behavior and can complicate later migrations to separate domains. Confirm that every theme, plugin, redirect and canonical-URL setting understands the path structure.
Safe routing sequence
- Create the DNS records for every production hostname and wait for the records to resolve from the locations where users will connect.
- Configure the web server’s virtual hosts or network hostname mapping so each request reaches the intended WordPress root.
- Enable TLS for every hostname, including any wildcard or alternate name actually used by the network.
- Set the site’s home and site URLs consistently with the public HTTPS hostname and verify redirects do not send one domain to another.
- Test the root URL, an administrator login, a representative permalink, a media file and a deliberately nonexistent URL for each site.
Keep a written map of hostname, document root, database, database user and backup set. That inventory is invaluable during incident response and prevents a new virtual host from accidentally inheriting another site’s configuration.

Treat the host as several cooperating layers rather than as one undifferentiated “WordPress server.” A bottleneck or permission error in one layer should be diagnosable without changing all the others.
Edge and web server
Use NGINX or Apache to terminate TLS, select the virtual host and serve static files. Keep each site’s document root explicit. Reject unintended hostnames, protect hidden configuration files and restrict administrative endpoints at the edge where appropriate. The edge should pass only the headers and request information PHP and WordPress need.
PHP execution
Run supported PHP versions and size PHP workers from measured traffic and plugin workload. A worker handles one active request at a time; too few workers create a queue, while too many consume memory and can force the operating system or database into contention. Measure peak concurrent requests, request duration, memory per worker and background jobs before changing the pool size.
Separate pools per site, or at least per trust group, can stop one installation from consuming every PHP worker. They cost more memory, so use them where ownership or failure isolation justifies the overhead.

Database layer
Use separate databases and credentials when tenant or failure isolation matters. Shared databases reduce routine administration, but an accidental table operation, migration mistake or exhausted connection pool has a wider blast radius. Restrict each credential to the permissions its installation needs, keep credentials out of publicly readable files and monitor slow queries and connection saturation.
Filesystem and identity
Run sites as non-privileged users. Separate users per site where possible, and grant write access only to directories that WordPress genuinely needs for uploads, updates or cache files. Keep configuration files and server credentials outside publicly served paths or protected by explicit web-server rules. Shared ownership or broad write permissions make a compromise in one site more likely to become a compromise in another.

Reverse-proxy and page caching
Place a reverse proxy such as NGINX or Varnish in front of PHP for cacheable pages. WordPress guidance notes that a cache can serve stored output without reaching PHP or the database, reducing repeated work. Do not cache administrator pages, logged-in sessions, carts, personalized responses or nonce-bearing requests. Include the hostname in the cache key so two domains can never receive one another’s HTML, and purge the correct site’s cache after content or plugin changes.
Storage and media
Keep each site’s uploads and generated files in a clearly identified location. Monitor free space and inode usage, not just CPU and memory; media-heavy sites can fail when either limit is reached. If storage is expanded or moved, preserve ownership, permissions and the paths WordPress records for uploaded files.
Estimate capacity from workload, not site count
WordPress publishes no universal formula for “sites per VPS.” Ten low-traffic brochure sites that are mostly served from cache can require fewer resources than one busy store or membership site with uncached, logged-in requests and scheduled jobs.
Measure the resource drivers
- Requests per second and peak concurrent requests, separated into cached and uncached traffic.
- PHP request duration, worker utilization, queue time and memory per worker.
- Database CPU, memory, active connections, slow-query volume and storage latency.
- Scheduled tasks, imports, image processing, search indexing, backups and other background work.
- Disk capacity, I/O throughput and inode consumption for uploads, logs and backups.
Start with one representative site, record normal and peak behavior, then add sites in stages. Leave headroom for traffic spikes, updates and recovery tasks instead of running every layer at its measured maximum.
Recognize the limiting layer
A rising PHP queue with idle database capacity points to worker count, slow plugins or uncached requests. High database latency with available PHP workers points to queries, indexes, connection limits or storage. Fast origin responses but slow user experience can indicate TLS, network or cache-miss patterns at the edge. Use access logs, PHP logs, database slow-query logs and system metrics together; a single CPU graph cannot identify the bottleneck.
Design isolation and security deliberately
Isolation is cumulative. Separate databases help, but they do not compensate for shared privileged Unix users, writable code directories or an administrator who controls every site.

- Use separate database credentials, and avoid granting one site’s credential access to another site’s schema.
- Keep WordPress core, themes and plugins current on a schedule appropriate to the chosen architecture.
- Use staging or a test copy for updates that could affect several sites, especially in a Multisite network.
- Centralize logs while restricting each site’s ability to alter or erase other sites’ logs.
- Document who can access network administration, server administration, databases and backups.
Multisite’s shared user table deserves special attention: a network-level account or capability error can cross site boundaries. Independent sites can still share a server administrator, so protect the host and backup system as high-value control planes.
Back up for the restore you actually need
Back up both files and databases before enabling Multisite, changing server settings or performing major upgrades. A usable backup is one that can be restored to a clean environment and verified, not merely one that completed without an error.

Multisite backup considerations
Capture the network’s WordPress files, configuration, database tables for every site and the shared user data. A single-site restore may require extracting only that site’s content and uploads while preserving network metadata; test this procedure before a real incident.
Independent-install backup considerations
Pair each site’s document root and configuration with its corresponding database backup. Separate databases make selection unambiguous. With a shared database, record the table prefix and ensure the restore process cannot overwrite neighboring prefixes.

- Restore a site into an isolated staging environment with no production DNS.
- Import the database and files using the documented ownership, permissions and configuration values.
- Test the home page, representative content, media, login, forms, scheduled tasks and outbound integrations.
- Confirm that URLs, TLS settings and cache keys point to staging rather than production.
- Record elapsed time, missing dependencies and corrective steps, then update the runbook.
Keep backups on storage that is operationally separate from the web root. Monitor backup age, size anomalies and failed jobs, and retain enough versions to recover from an unnoticed content or configuration error.

Use a site inventory
For every site, record its public hostnames, document root, operating-system user, PHP pool, database and credential owner, cache policy, scheduled jobs, backup location, code version and recovery priority. Mark shared components in a Multisite network so an apparently local change is not mistaken for a site-only change.
Separate deployment and rollback paths
Independent installations can be updated and rolled back one at a time. A Multisite network needs a coordinated change window, a tested rollback and a way to disable or revert a network-wide plugin or theme without taking every site offline. Never rely on an untested “latest” update as the rollback plan.
Monitor per-site symptoms
Collect status checks, response time, PHP errors, database errors, disk usage, certificate expiry and backup age with the site identity attached. Aggregate dashboards are useful for capacity, but alerts must identify which hostname, pool, database or filesystem is failing.

Common failure modes and fixes
The domain shows the wrong WordPress site
Check DNS resolution first, then the web server’s hostname rule and document root. Verify that the HTTPS virtual host is configured separately from HTTP and that a default-server rule is not catching the request. Finally, confirm WordPress’s stored home and site URLs.
All sites become slow at once
Inspect PHP worker queues, database connections, disk latency and host memory before changing individual plugins. A shared reverse proxy, database service or exhausted filesystem can affect every site even when each site’s code is healthy.

Only one site is slow
Compare that site’s uncached request rate, plugin activity, scheduled jobs, database queries and media operations with a healthy neighbor. A per-site PHP pool, database schema or access log makes this comparison much faster.
Cache serves another site’s page
Ensure the cache key includes the requested hostname and relevant protocol, and bypass caching for authenticated or personalized requests. Purge affected entries after correcting the key; otherwise old cross-domain responses may remain visible.
A Multisite change breaks several sites
Disable the change using the network’s documented recovery method, restore the known-good code or database state, and use staging to identify the incompatible component. Network-wide maintenance is why backups and rollback steps must precede the change.
A restore works but uploads or permissions fail
Check that the restore recreated the expected upload directories, ownership, non-privileged user and write permissions. Confirm that the web server is serving the restored document root and that no stale cache points to the old files.
When to split a shared architecture
Move a site out of a Multisite network when it needs an independent owner, plugin policy, release calendar, domain lifecycle or recovery point. Move from a shared database to separate databases when contractual isolation, per-site restores or protection from database mistakes outweighs the additional administration.
Conversely, consolidating related independent sites into Multisite can be reasonable when the same team owns them, coordinated updates are desirable and a network-wide outage is acceptable. Plan the migration as a reversible project: inventory URLs and tables, take verified backups, stage the conversion, test redirects and media, then schedule a rollback window.

A practical architecture for most multi-site hosts
For unrelated sites, use one explicit virtual host per domain, separate non-privileged identities, independent document roots, separate databases and credentials, a reverse-proxy cache configured with hostname-aware keys, and per-site file-and-database backups. For a coordinated family of sites, use Multisite with the same edge, PHP, cache and backup discipline, but treat network administration and shared users as a single high-impact control plane.
In both cases, add sites only after measuring the current workload, preserve resource headroom, and prove that each site’s backup can be restored. That combination—not a nominal site-count promise—is what makes the architecture dependable.
