Your next customer might never visit Google—or any search result. An AI answer can satisfy a question before someone clicks through to a website, which makes “Will AI search reduce my website traffic?” a practical concern, not a reason to abandon SEO. The evidence shows that clicks can fall in some search situations, but it does not establish one outcome for every site or prove that AI Overviews alone caused publisher traffic declines.
Does SEO still matter in AI search?
Yes. Google says its generative search features, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, are built on core Search ranking and quality systems. They retrieve information from Google’s Search index, and a process called query fan-out can issue related searches to gather material for an answer. Google Search Central says SEO best practices remain relevant to these features: Google’s Guide to Optimizing for Generative AI Features on Google Search.
That does not mean every well-optimized page will appear in an AI answer, or that an appearance will bring a visit. It means the familiar foundations—being crawlable, technically eligible for Search, and useful to people—still matter for discovery. “How do I get found in AI search?” starts with making a page accessible and worth retrieving, not with a guaranteed ranking formula.

A 2025 Pew Research Center study found fewer traditional result clicks on Google visits where an AI summary appeared. In its analysis of browsing data from 900 U.S. adults, 8% of visits to Google pages with a summary led to a click on a traditional search result, compared with 15% of visits without one. A link inside the summary itself was clicked in 1% of visits to pages with a summary.

Those figures describe a specific study, not a universal or current click-through rate. Pew examined 68,879 unique Google searches from March 2025; 12,593 produced an AI summary. Search results were collected in April 2025, and 18% of the study’s searches produced a summary. The study measured users’ next actions in that sample, not the performance of every business or the long-term effect on conversions. Read the Pew Research Center findings and methodology.
In the same dataset, question-word searches and longer searches were more likely to produce summaries: 60% of queries beginning with question words and 53% of searches with ten or more words produced one. These are characteristics of Pew’s March 2025 U.S. sample, not a forecast for what any particular query will show.

Why do reports on search traffic appear to conflict?
They measure different things. Reuters Institute’s 2026 Digital News Report cites Chartbeat data for more than 2,500 publisher sites: Google organic traffic was down 33% globally and 38% in the United States between November 2024 and November 2025. The report says it is unclear how much of that decline was due to AI Overviews. The figures concern a publisher sample and do not establish the trend for all businesses or its cause. See the Reuters Institute overview and key findings.
Google, meanwhile, said its own data showed that “Overall, total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year.” Liz Reid, Google’s VP and Head of Search, made that statement on August 6, 2025, in Google’s account of AI in Search. This is the company’s account of its aggregate data, not an independent measurement of every site.
Rank #3
The Pew study tracks what users did after particular Google searches with or without summaries. Reuters Institute reports referral changes across publisher websites over a year. Google describes aggregate click volume and click quality in its own data. Different populations, periods, and measures can produce different findings. Taken together, they support neither “all sites are losing traffic because of AI” nor “AI has no effect on clicks.”
What should a site do now?
Publish something more valuable than a generic summary
Google recommends distinctive, useful content rather than material that merely repeats common information. Add what your organization can uniquely provide: first-hand experience, original analysis, specific examples, expert explanation, or an answer grounded in your own products and customers. Google’s Liz Reid said people are more likely to click into web content that helps them learn more, such as “an in-depth review, an original post, a unique perspective or a thoughtful first-person analysis.” That is Google’s characterization of its data, not a promise that any format will earn a click.
Clear organization and relevant images or video can also help people understand a page. Build for the reader first; do not reshape useful material into awkward fragments simply to chase an AI system.

Keep pages technically accessible
Check that important pages can be crawled and meet Google Search’s technical requirements. Google says site owners do not need to create an llms.txt file or special markup for its AI Search features, split content into tiny “chunks,” rewrite pages solely for AI, or pursue inauthentic mentions. Those are not Google requirements. Its guidance is available in Google’s generative AI features guide.

Measure visibility separately from business results
Use Google Search Console’s generative AI performance report, where available, to understand discovery through Google’s generative features. Then assess whether that visibility matters to your business by looking at outcomes beyond impressions or citations. A mention or citation in an AI answer is not, on its own, evidence of a new customer.
- Visibility: Search impressions and performance in Google’s generative features.
- Visits: Organic clicks and referral sessions, separated by source where your analytics supports it.
- Business outcomes: Leads, purchases, sign-ups, or other conversions tied to the channels you can measure.
- Demand and resilience: Branded searches, direct visits, returning customers, and engagement with email, community, social, or video.
Compare these measures over consistent periods and against your own baseline. A change in one channel does not automatically describe another: Google organic, Discover, AI chatbot referrals, direct traffic, email, social, and video have different sources and user behavior.
Build ways to reach people without relying on a search click
SEO can introduce a customer to your site, but a business is more resilient when it can also bring people back directly. Where appropriate, give visitors a reason to subscribe to email, join a community, save a useful resource, or return for a service. Those relationships complement search; they do not require you to predict exactly how AI answers will change.

No book is a prerequisite for adapting your site. If you prefer a book-length introduction, Ahrefs says its beginner SEO guide is available in hardcover and covers AI’s relationship to SEO and AI search engines. Treat it as an optional way to learn the fundamentals, not as a substitute for measuring your own pages and customers. See Ahrefs’ SEO: The Complete Guide for Beginners.
