For a general benchmark of India’s large-cap share market, Nifty 50 is the better default. It contains 50 securities across 13 sectors and is designed for portfolio benchmarking, index funds and derivatives. SENSEX remains useful when you want a shorter 30-stock signal from the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). Neither index represents every listed Indian company: both are float-adjusted market-capitalisation indexes, so the largest investible companies have the greatest influence.
Sensex and Nifty 50 at a glance
The two indexes answer slightly different tracking needs. Nifty 50 offers a broader large-cap basket, while SENSEX is a more compact blue-chip gauge. The table uses the latest dated figures supplied by the exchanges; constituents, weights and trading statistics can change.
| Feature | Nifty 50 | SENSEX |
|---|---|---|
| Number of securities | 50 | 30 |
| Sector description | Diversified across 13 sectors, according to NSE India | Tighter 30-stock basket; the supplied exchange material does not state an equivalent sector count |
| Weighting | Free-float market capitalisation | Float-adjusted market capitalisation |
| Main exchange association | National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) | Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) |
| Typical use | Portfolio benchmark, index funds, exchange-traded funds and futures/options | Compact BSE flagship indicator and blue-chip market signal |
| Nifty base information | Base date: November 3, 1995; base value: 1,000; calculated online | Comparable base details were not stated in the supplied exchange material |
“Better” therefore depends on the job. If you need one reference for a diversified Indian large-cap allocation, choose Nifty 50. If you follow BSE’s headline barometer or specifically want a 30-company basket, SENSEX is the closer fit.
What the two indexes actually measure
Nifty 50: a 50-stock large-cap benchmark
Nifty 50 is NSE’s 50-security index. NSE describes it as “a diversified 50 stock index accounting for 13 sectors of the economy.” Its breadth makes it a common reference point for assessing large-cap Indian equity portfolios. A fund manager can compare portfolio performance with Nifty 50, and an index product can seek to hold the same securities in matching proportions.

NSE also identifies Nifty 50 as a basis for index funds and derivatives. That does not mean every fund or contract has identical costs or trading conditions; it means the index is used as the reference asset for those products.
SENSEX: BSE’s concise flagship
SENSEX contains 30 securities, so it is a shorter summary of prominent BSE-listed companies. A 30-stock basket can be easier to follow on a daily dashboard and can serve as a compact blue-chip signal. Its smaller constituent count also means that an individual company can matter more to the index than it would in a 50-stock basket, especially when that company has a large float-adjusted market value.
Neither index is the whole Indian market
Both benchmarks focus on large, investible companies. They do not include every listed business, smaller companies, unlisted firms, bonds, commodities or the wider Indian economy. A day when either index rises says that the weighted basket rose; it does not establish that every Indian share, or every sector, gained.
Constituent count and sector breadth
Why 50 versus 30 matters
Fifty holdings provide more room for companies from different industries and reduce dependence on any one constituent. Thirty holdings still provide substantial diversification compared with owning one or two shares, but the basket is more concentrated by design. The difference is structural, not a guarantee that Nifty 50 will outperform SENSEX.
Constituent lists and index weights are reviewed under each index’s methodology. Membership can change, so a historical comparison should use the constituent and weight data for the specific date being studied rather than assuming today’s basket existed unchanged in the past.
What the 13-sector description tells you
NSE’s official description gives Nifty 50 exposure across 13 sectors. That is useful evidence of intended breadth, but the sector count alone does not tell you how much of the index each sector represents. Market-cap weighting can leave a few large sectors with much greater influence than several smaller ones. SENSEX’s tighter basket may also span several industries, but the supplied exchange material does not establish a matching sector-count figure.

How free-float market-cap weighting works
The basic calculation
Both indexes use a form of market-capitalisation weighting adjusted for the shares available to public investors. In simplified terms, a company’s influence depends on its share price, its shares outstanding and the proportion regarded as free float. Shares that are not readily available for public trading, such as strategic or closely held stakes under the applicable methodology, do not receive the same weight as freely investible shares.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe result is a weighted index rather than an equal-weight list. The largest investible companies exert the greatest effect on the index’s daily movement. If a heavily weighted constituent moves sharply, it can lift or pull down the benchmark even while smaller constituents move in the opposite direction.
What weighting means for your interpretation
- A higher index level does not mean that all 50 or 30 stocks rose.
- Owning an index fund does not give every constituent an equal rupee allocation.
- Concentration can develop when a few companies or sectors become much larger than the rest.
- Weight changes can occur as prices, free-float estimates and membership change.
Free-float weighting is intended to reflect the portion of company value that investors can actually trade, but it remains a model. It is not a census of every rupee invested by Indian households or institutions.
Coverage and liquidity: what the dated NSE figures show
NSE reported that Nifty 50 represented 53.73% of the free-float market capitalisation of NSE-listed stocks on March 30, 2026. That percentage is a snapshot for that date, not a permanent coverage ratio. Prices, listings, free-float classifications and index membership can all change it.
NSE also reported that Nifty 50 constituents accounted for 29.24% of NSE traded value during the six months ending in March 2026. This is a traded-value statistic for that six-month period, not a promise that the index will always have that share of market activity.
Recommended Free Tools
These figures support Nifty 50’s role as a substantial large-cap reference, but they do not make it a complete market index. They also should not be compared with a SENSEX coverage percentage unless the same exchange, date, definition and measurement period are available.

History and calculation details
Nifty 50’s base
Nifty 50 uses November 3, 1995 as its base date and 1,000 as its base value. NSE states that it is calculated online. The base is a calculation convention: it allows subsequent index values to express the weighted change in the basket relative to that starting point. It is not the amount an investor had to pay to buy the index.
Why an index level is not an investment return by itself
An index level tracks the methodology’s price movements. A product that follows the index may have expenses, cash balances, taxes, rebalancing effects and tracking differences. Before judging a fund or ETF, check whether its published performance is a price return or a total-return version and read the product documents. The supplied exchange material does not establish a matched long-term total-return comparison between Nifty 50 and SENSEX.
Which index should you track for your purpose?
For one broad Indian large-cap benchmark
Choose Nifty 50 as the default. Its 50 securities and official 13-sector description provide a wider large-cap snapshot than a 30-stock index. It is also explicitly used for portfolio benchmarking, index funds and derivatives, which makes it practical when you need a common reference across reports and products.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a compact BSE headline signal
Choose SENSEX when your objective is to follow BSE’s flagship 30-stock barometer. Its concise basket is convenient for a quick market read, provided you remember that fewer constituents can make the signal more sensitive to the largest members.
For comparing an actively managed portfolio
Use the benchmark that matches the portfolio’s mandate. A portfolio restricted to a particular exchange universe, sector mix or large-cap definition may not be fairly judged against either index. If the mandate is broad Indian large caps, Nifty 50 is usually the closer starting point; document any deliberate differences in sector or size exposure.
For futures, options or index-linked products
Use the underlying named in the contract or fund documents. Nifty 50 is widely used for derivatives according to NSE, but the practical choice depends on the product’s listing, liquidity, contract specifications and costs at the time you trade. Do not assume that a product referencing one index can be substituted freely for a product referencing the other.

Is Nifty 50 safer or more diversified than SENSEX?
Nifty 50 is broader by constituent count and is officially described as spanning 13 sectors, so it generally offers more diversification within the large-cap segment. Diversification can reduce the effect of one company’s problem on the basket. It cannot remove market risk, sector concentration or declines in large-cap Indian equities.
Neither index is automatically safer, and neither is guaranteed to outperform. Because both are float-adjusted and market-cap weighted, a handful of very large companies can dominate returns. Nifty 50’s extra 20 holdings may help with breadth, but the actual difference in concentration depends on current weights. Examine the latest factsheets when concentration is important to your decision.
Past performance also cannot settle the question on its own. A period in which one index leads may reflect changing constituent weights, sector leadership or membership changes. It does not prove that the same index will lead in the future.
Can you invest directly in Sensex or Nifty 50?
No. An index is a measurement benchmark, not a security that you purchase directly. NSE explains the concept this way: “If you buy all 50 stocks in the NIFTY 50, in correct proportions, that would be called ‘an index trade’.” In practice, most investors use an index mutual fund or an exchange-traded fund designed to track the chosen benchmark.
What to check in a Nifty 50 or SENSEX fund
| Check | Why it matters | What to verify today |
|---|---|---|
| Tracking error | Shows how closely the product has followed its benchmark. | Read the latest factsheet and the period used for the calculation. |
| Expense ratio | Costs reduce the return retained by investors. | Confirm the current, recurring charge rather than relying on an old article. |
| Assets under management | Can indicate product scale, but does not by itself prove quality or liquidity. | Check the latest disclosure date. |
| Replication method | A physical portfolio and other structures can have different operational details. | Read the scheme or ETF documents to see how the index is replicated. |
| Availability and dealing mechanics | Mutual funds and ETFs have different purchase, sale and pricing processes. | Confirm the exchange listing or fund-platform availability in your jurisdiction. |
No current expense ratio, tracking-error figure, asset total, tax treatment or product availability is established here. Those are product-level facts and must be checked in the latest official documents before investing.

- Define the job. Decide whether you need a market dashboard, a portfolio benchmark, a passive investment vehicle or a derivatives reference.
- Choose the breadth that fits. Select Nifty 50 for the broader 50-stock large-cap snapshot; select SENSEX for the compact BSE 30-stock signal.
- Check the date. Record the index factsheet date, constituent list and weights. Do not apply a current composition to a historical analysis without checking changes.
- Match the product. If investing, identify a fund or ETF that explicitly tracks the selected index and read its current documents.
- Compare implementation details. Review tracking error, expense ratio, assets, replication method, bid-ask conditions for an ETF and availability through your chosen platform.
- Monitor the benchmark, not headlines alone. Follow changes in constituent membership, sector weights and free-float classifications so you understand what the index represents at that time.
Common mistakes when comparing the indexes
Calling either index “the Indian market”
Both are large-cap indicators. Smaller companies and securities outside the baskets can behave very differently. Use the phrase “large-cap Indian equities” when describing what they cover.

Assuming more stocks means equal diversification
Nifty 50 has 50 constituents, but market-cap weighting means holdings are not equal. Always inspect current company and sector weights if concentration affects your decision.
Comparing raw index levels
A Nifty value of 1,000 at its base and a SENSEX level quoted on a different scale are not directly comparable. Compare percentage returns over the same dates and use the appropriate price or total-return series.
Treating an index as a guaranteed portfolio
An index fund can deviate from its benchmark because of fees, cash flows, rebalancing and trading costs. The index itself does not promise a return, capital protection or lower volatility.

Using stale constituent or coverage data
The 53.73% free-float-capitalisation figure is dated March 30, 2026, and the 29.24% traded-value figure covers the six months ending in March 2026. Recheck current exchange data before making a present-day allocation or liquidity claim.
Bottom line for most readers
Track Nifty 50 if you want one broad, widely used benchmark for Indian large-cap stocks. Its 50 securities, 13-sector description and established use in benchmarking, index funds and derivatives make it the stronger general-purpose default. Track SENSEX when the BSE flagship and a concise 30-stock blue-chip signal are more relevant. Treat both as weighted measurements of large-cap equities—not complete market portfolios—and use a current, well-documented fund or ETF if you want investable exposure.
