Sensex and Nifty 50 are not the same index. Sensex measures a 30-company, BSE-listed large-company universe, while Nifty 50 measures 50 stocks selected for the NSE’s benchmark. Both use free-float market-capitalisation weighting, but they have different constituent pools, eligibility rules, review processes and historical bases.
There is no universal winner. Track the benchmark that matches the exchange universe you want to monitor, and compare the two only with identical dates and matching return series—price with price, or total return with total return. Their displayed point levels are not directly comparable.
Sensex vs Nifty 50 at a glance
| Feature | BSE SENSEX | Nifty 50 |
|---|---|---|
| Provider and exchange universe | BSE Indices; companies listed on BSE | NSE Indices; stocks in the NSE benchmark universe |
| Number of constituents | 30 companies | 50 stocks |
| History supplied by the index owner | Launched on 2 January 1986 | Base period: close of 3 November 1995; base value 1,000 |
| Weighting principle | Float-adjusted market capitalisation | Free-float market capitalisation; used since 26 June 2009 |
| Selection universe | Derived from the BSE 100, subject to eligibility and selection screens | NSE methodology screens liquidity, impact cost, free-float capitalisation and other requirements |
| Review pattern | Governed by BSE’s current methodology and review rules | Generally reconstituted semi-annually under the September 2026 methodology, with stated limits and exceptions |
These are separate benchmarks maintained by separate index providers. A company can appear in both, but neither index is simply a smaller or larger version of the other. The constituent lists and weights change over time, so a current overlap or sector comparison must use files dated for the same day.

BSE describes SENSEX as a bellwether index of companies listed on BSE. Its eligible universe is derived from the BSE 100 rather than from every company traded on the exchange. The index then applies eligibility and selection rules intended to identify a liquid, large-company sample.

BSE says SENSEX launched on 2 January 1986. That date is a launch date, not a base-period statement equivalent to the Nifty 50’s published base period. The distinction matters when interpreting long historical charts: an index’s starting convention and scaling affect its point value, but do not make one point in Sensex equal to one point in Nifty 50.
Sensex selection in the current methodology
BSE’s methodology describes a minimum six-month listing history and trading on every BSE trading day over the relevant reference period. Eligibility also includes derivative linkage among the stated factors. Eligible companies are ranked using six-month float-adjusted and total market capitalisation. The process then applies annualised traded-value and constituent-weight screens before selecting a target of 30 companies.
The exact screens can change when BSE revises its methodology. If you need to reproduce a selection decision, use the current BSE methodology document rather than relying on a summary written for an earlier edition.
What Nifty 50 represents
NSE Indices defines Nifty 50 as a diversified 50-stock index representing important sectors of the economy. It is the NSE’s large-company benchmark and uses a free-float market-capitalisation approach.
The Nifty 50’s base period is the close of 3 November 1995, with a base value of 1,000. This is index-construction context, not a price that can be compared directly with the current Sensex level or used to decide which index has “grown more” by looking at the headline points alone.
Nifty 50 eligibility and review
The September 2026 NSE Indices methodology says a company’s average free-float market capitalisation must be at least 1.5 times that of the smallest Nifty 50 constituent to qualify under that criterion. The methodology also specifies liquidity and impact-cost requirements and describes semi-annual reconstitution.
Under the ordinary annual limit, no more than five additions may be made in a calendar year, although the methodology lists exceptions. Because the rules and constituent files are periodically updated, a historical article should not be treated as a permanent list of qualifying companies.

How the weighting systems work
Both indexes use a form of float-adjusted market-capitalisation weighting. In simple terms, a company’s influence depends on its market value multiplied by the portion of shares considered available for ordinary market trading. A company with a large total value does not automatically receive a proportionate index weight if much of its stock is held by promoters, governments, controlling shareholders or strategic investors.
Free float is not total company value
Free float is a methodology concept, not a guarantee that every share classified as available can be bought instantly. NSE Indices says its investible weight factors are derived from publicly disclosed shareholding information and seek to reduce the influence of promoter or strategic holdings that are generally not available for trading.
Suppose two companies have the same total market capitalisation. If one has a larger proportion of shares available to public investors, its free-float market capitalisation can be larger and its index weight can be higher. Conversely, a company with substantial locked-in or strategic ownership can have a smaller index weight than its total market value suggests.
Weighting also means that the largest eligible companies usually have more influence on an index’s daily movement than smaller constituents. The exact contribution depends on each stock’s price change and its weight on that day; it is not determined by the number of companies alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy Sensex and Nifty 50 can move differently on the same day
The indexes respond to overlapping but non-identical portfolios. Their constituent counts differ, their exchange universes differ, and their selection and weighting rules differ. A sharp move in a heavily weighted stock can therefore affect one index more than the other, even when the broad Indian market appears to be moving in one direction.
Differences can also arise when a company is present in both indexes but carries a different weight. The same share-price change then contributes different amounts to each benchmark. Companies present in only one index contribute nothing to the other index’s calculation.
Daily divergence does not by itself show that one benchmark is wrong or inferior. It is the expected result of measuring different baskets. To investigate a particular day, compare the dated constituent and weight files, then identify which holdings made the largest weighted contributions.

Do not compare the headline index points
A Sensex reading and a Nifty 50 reading are scaled from different historical conventions. Sensex’s cited date is its launch on 2 January 1986, while Nifty 50 publishes a base period at the close of 3 November 1995 and a base value of 1,000. Their point levels therefore have no common unit.
For example, saying that one index is “higher” because its displayed number is larger confuses scale with performance. The correct comparison is a percentage change over the same start and end dates, using the same type of return series.
Price return versus total return
The index name alone does not tell you whether dividends are included. A price index reflects changes in constituent prices. A total-return index adds dividends and assumes they are reinvested according to the index methodology.
NSE Indices distinguishes the Nifty 50 price index from Nifty 50 Total Returns. The total-return series includes reinvested dividends and is the appropriate benchmark for mutual funds that receive dividend distributions, according to the NSE Indices FAQ.
The matching rule
- Choose the measurement dates, such as the close on a specified start date and the close on a specified end date.
- Choose price return for both indexes, or total return for both. Do not compare a price series for one index with a dividend-inclusive series for the other.
- Use the same frequency and treatment of non-trading days. If one market series is unavailable on a chosen date, document the next common trading day rather than silently changing only one side.
- Calculate percentage change from each series’ starting value. Do not use the absolute point difference.
A total-return comparison answers how a reinvesting investor’s benchmark wealth changed under the stated convention. A price-return comparison answers how quoted constituent prices changed. Neither automatically describes an investor’s realised return after fund fees, taxes, cash flows or tracking differences.

Which index should you track?
The answer depends on what you want the benchmark to represent. Constituent count alone is not a decision rule, and there is no evidence-based universal recommendation that every reader should follow one index.
Track Sensex when your reference point is BSE’s large-company universe
Sensex is the natural headline measure if you follow companies listed in the BSE-defined benchmark universe or regularly use BSE market coverage and publications. Its 30-company design gives you a concentrated large-company barometer. Concentration can make heavily weighted constituents especially important to daily moves, so a reader should understand that it is not a complete measure of every listed company.

Track Nifty 50 when your reference point is NSE’s 50-stock benchmark
Nifty 50 fits a reader who wants the NSE-defined diversified 50-stock benchmark, including its stated liquidity, impact-cost and free-float-capitalisation criteria. Its larger constituent count provides a broader sample than Sensex within the specific rules of the Nifty methodology. “Broader” here means more constituents, not a guarantee of lower volatility or a complete representation of all NSE-listed shares.
Track both for a cross-check
Following both can be useful when you want to see whether the BSE and NSE benchmark universes are moving together. Treat divergence as information about composition and weights, not as a signal to switch automatically. For a meaningful comparison, keep the date, return type and data source consistent.

You can monitor either index with a simple, repeatable process. The objective is to avoid mixing an intraday quote, a closing level, a price-return chart and a total-return chart in one conclusion.
- Define the question. Write whether you want the BSE large-company benchmark, the NSE 50-stock benchmark, a market-news barometer or a dividend-inclusive performance measure.
- Choose the series. Select the official price index for price movement or the corresponding total-return series when dividends should be included.
- Record the timestamp. Note the trading date, close or intraday time, currency and source. Index values are time-sensitive.
- Keep a consistent history. Save observations at a regular frequency, such as daily closes, and avoid comparing one index at a close with the other at an unrelated intraday time.
- Review methodology changes. Check the latest BSE or NSE Indices methodology when a constituent change, eligibility revision or weighting-rule update is announced.
- Separate the index from an investment product. An index is a calculation. An index fund or exchange-traded fund is a separate product with fees, tracking differences, risks, tax treatment and availability that must be evaluated independently.
What the published Nifty statistics mean
NSE Indices reported that, as of 30 March 2026, Nifty 50 represented 53.73% of the free-float market capitalisation of stocks listed on the NSE. This is a dated share of the stated NSE universe, not a permanent percentage and not the proportion of India’s entire economic output.
For the six months ending March 2026, NSE Indices reported that Nifty 50 constituents represented 29.24% of total NSE stock traded value. That figure describes the specified period and turnover measure; it should not be reused as a timeless liquidity statistic.
The Nifty 50 base value of 1,000 and its 3 November 1995 base period explain how the series is scaled. They do not establish a current performance advantage over Sensex.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating the indexes as interchangeable
They are separately maintained benchmarks with different constituent counts and eligibility universes. Use the name of the index that matches the exchange universe in your analysis.

Mistake: comparing point levels
Point levels reflect different bases and scaling. Convert both series to percentage returns over identical dates.
Mistake: overlooking dividends
Check whether a chart is labelled price or total return. A total-return series includes reinvested dividends; a price series does not.
Mistake: assuming more constituents means automatic diversification
Nifty 50 has 50 stocks and Sensex has 30 companies, but diversification also depends on weights, concentration and constituent relationships. Do not infer risk characteristics from the count alone.
Mistake: using stale methodology
Selection screens and review rules can change. The September 2026 Nifty methodology and the current BSE methodology are the appropriate references for decisions made now; older summaries may describe rules that no longer apply.
Mistake: presenting a dated statistic as current
Market coverage, traded value, constituents, weights and sector shares change. Label figures with their measurement date and refresh them before publishing a current chart or making an investment decision.
Using the comparison for investment research
Indexes are useful reference points, but they are not automatically investable instruments. If you evaluate a fund or ETF intended to track Sensex or Nifty 50, examine its current objective, fees, tracking difference, taxation, liquidity, replication method and availability. Those product questions are separate from deciding which benchmark best describes the market segment you want to observe.
For a rigorous head-to-head study, download the two providers’ constituent files and factsheets dated the same day. Compare the overlap, top-stock concentration, sector weights and matching price-return or total-return histories. A chart that mixes dates or series labels can create a persuasive but invalid conclusion.
Bottom line
Sensex is BSE’s 30-company large-company benchmark; Nifty 50 is NSE Indices’ 50-stock benchmark. Both use float-adjusted market-capitalisation principles, but their universes and rules are different. Track Sensex for the BSE-defined barometer, Nifty 50 for the NSE-defined benchmark, or both for a composition cross-check. When comparing performance, use identical dates, matching return types and percentage changes—not the raw index points.
