Indian stocks rebounded in Friday morning trading on 4 September 2026 after four consecutive losing sessions. The BSE Sensex rose 531.88 points, or 0.70%, to 76,684.74, while the NSE Nifty 50 gained 78.25 points, or 0.33%, to 23,951.70 in the early-trade snapshot reported by PTI.

The levels in the supplied headline—Sensex 73,154 and Nifty above 22,750—do not match the figures reported by PTI through DT Next, ETBFSI and Rediff Money. Those headline levels should be checked against the original publisher or exchange record before being used.

Sensex and Nifty levels in early trade

Index Early-trade level Change Previous close
BSE Sensex 76,684.74 Up 531.88 points (0.70%) 76,152.86
NSE Nifty 50 23,951.70 Up 78.25 points (0.33%) 23,873.45

These are morning-market readings, not final closing values. The previous session, Thursday, ended with the Sensex down 417.49 points at 76,152.86 and the Nifty down 41 points at 23,873.45. That decline extended the market’s losing run to four sessions before Friday’s rebound.

Why did Sensex jump?

Reports attributed the recovery primarily to stronger global risk sentiment. Asian markets were broadly higher, while US equities had gained more than 1% overnight. The cited morning snapshot showed Hong Kong’s Hang Seng up about 2%, South Korea’s KOSPI higher by 1.3%, Japan’s Nikkei gaining 1.11% and Shanghai’s SSE Composite rising 0.35%.

That international backdrop encouraged buying in Indian large-cap shares after the four-day decline. The move was a rebound from recent selling rather than evidence that the session’s final direction had been established; prices and breadth can change throughout the trading day.

Stocks leading the early rally

Major gainers

The early-trade list named Bajaj Finserv, Bharat Electronics, IndiGo, Trent, Reliance Industries, Infosys, Titan, Adani Ports, UltraTech Cement, Bajaj Finance, Kotak Mahindra Bank, HDFC Bank and State Bank of India among the prominent Sensex-related gainers.

Rank #2

Stocks that lagged

Buying was not uniform. Axis Bank, Eternal, ICICI Bank and Asian Paints were identified among the laggards in the same snapshot, showing that index gains were being driven by stronger performance in selected heavyweight constituents rather than every listed share moving higher.

Crude oil and investor flows

Brent crude

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.48% to USD 95.98 per barrel. Higher oil prices are an important variable for Indian markets because India imports much of its crude, although the early reports did not quantify any specific impact on the indexes from this move.

FII and DII activity

Exchange data reported by PTI showed foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold Indian equities worth ₹2,345.87 crore on Thursday. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought ₹4,977.46 crore during the same session. The contrasting flows indicate domestic institutions provided buying support while overseas investors remained net sellers before Friday’s opening rebound.

How to read this market update

  1. Separate points from percentages: the Sensex’s 531.88-point gain equals 0.70%, while the Nifty’s 78.25-point rise equals 0.33%; the two indexes have different point scales.
  2. Compare with the prior close: Friday’s early levels were measured from Thursday’s closes of 76,152.86 for the Sensex and 23,873.45 for the Nifty.
  3. Check the time stamp: an early-trade quote can move materially before the closing bell and should not be treated as the day’s final result.
  4. Look beyond the headline index: the named gainers, laggards, overseas markets, crude and institutional flows explain the context behind the move.

What the conflicting headline levels mean

The figures 73,154 for the Sensex and “above 22,750” for the Nifty are inconsistent with all of the retrieved 4 September 2026 morning reports, which place the indexes at 76,684.74 and 23,951.70 respectively. Readers relying on a live quote should verify the number, date and whether it refers to an index level, a prior session or a different market snapshot directly with an exchange feed or the original publisher.

What to watch next

  • Whether gains in heavyweight shares broaden to more constituents as trading continues.
  • Whether Asian and US market strength persists through the Indian session.
  • Further movement in Brent crude near USD 95.98 per barrel.
  • Fresh FII and DII data after Friday’s session, following Thursday’s contrasting institutional flows.
