Which shares and sectors led the rally?
IT shares outperformed
The BSE IT index gained 2.91%, and the Focused IT index rose 2.96%, according to PTI. TCS shares advanced 4.23% after the company reported July–September-quarter net profit up 15% to Rs 13,884 crore. Analysts quoted in the report described the results as a source of support for IT shares; the report does not independently establish how much of the share move they caused.

Other notable movers
ITC rose 4.78%, the strongest gainer among Sensex constituents named in the report. Adani Ports, Infosys, HCL Tech, Larsen & Toubro and HDFC Bank were also listed among major gainers. Reliance Industries was the only laggard in the blue-chip group, PTI reported.
All BSE sectoral indices ended higher. Other reported advances included Hospitals (+2.46%), FMCG (+2.02%), MidSmall Private Banks Quality Tilt (+1.91%), Services (+1.71%), MidSmall Private Banks (+1.53%), Insurance (+1.45%), PSU Bank (+1.37%) and Private Banks (+1.25%). What explanations did analysts give?
Commentators quoted by PTI characterized the move as a relief rally following the sell-off. They pointed to bargain or value buying and short covering, TCS’s quarterly results, and improved global sentiment. These are analysts’ interpretations, not proof that any one factor caused the rise.
Some commentators also cited easing crude prices and reduced concern about immediate US military action against Iran. Brent crude was reported down 1.32% to USD 102.9 per barrel. The report also described AI-related revenue opportunities as part of the positive sentiment around IT. Neither the geopolitical explanation nor expectations about AI revenue establish a broader market or company outlook.
What was the wider market context?
BSE market breadth was positive: 2,516 shares advanced, 1,867 declined and 227 were unchanged, according to the report. Asian trading was mixed: Japan’s Nikkei 225 ended marginally lower, while Shanghai’s SSE Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng ended higher; South Korean markets were closed. European markets were trading higher when the report was filed, while US markets had closed mostly lower the previous day. These were not all completed sessions at the same point in time.
PTI also reported that foreign institutional investors sold equities worth Rs 12,943.58 crore on Thursday, citing exchange data. That prior-session figure is context, not evidence that investors’ positioning changed on Friday.

What the rebound does—and does not—show
The session recovered much of the previous day’s losses, with IT stocks leading and advances extending across sectors. A single day’s move, even alongside a positive weekly close, cannot establish whether the market has entered a sustained recovery. The report covers October 9 only and does not provide subsequent sessions.
