Verdict: Sennheiser’s Momentum True Wireless 5 is a genuine 2026 flagship for listeners who want high-end sound and a battery system they can maintain instead of discarding. The earbuds cost $299.95 in the US, deliver up to 12 hours per charge and 40 hours with the case on the manufacturer’s rating, and let owners replace both the two earbud cells and the case cell with a Phillips PH000 screwdriver. Its adaptive noise cancellation, excellent calls and Dolby Atmos head tracking are compelling, although the fit may be too snug for very small ears and the ANC is not class-leading.
What the Momentum True Wireless 5 is and what changed
Sennheiser announced the Momentum True Wireless 5 on August 20, 2026, as a top-to-bottom redesign of its flagship true-wireless line. The headline change is repairability: the rechargeable batteries are intended for end-user replacement. That addresses the usual failure point in sealed wireless earbuds and can extend the product’s useful life well beyond the first battery cycle.
The official US price is $299.95. Sennheiser sells the earbuds directly and through retailers; regional pricing and stock can differ. Tom’s Guide listed the earbuds at $299 in the US and £249 in the UK at the time of its September 3, 2026 review, so check the live price before buying.

Replaceable batteries: exactly what you can change
Sennheiser’s support documentation says both the earbuds and charging case have batteries that end users can replace. The required tool is a standard Phillips PH000 screwdriver.

| Part | Replacement identifier | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Earbud battery kit | BA 501 | Set of two earbud batteries |
| Charging-case battery | BA 502 | One case battery |
The batteries are not the same part: BA 501 is the paired earbud set, while BA 502 is for the case. Sennheiser says these compatible batteries will be available in the EU and selected countries. Availability, pricing and installation documentation may vary by market, so confirm local parts support before purchase.
What replacement does—and does not—mean
Replaceability is a service-life feature, not a hot-swappable design. You must open the relevant housing, disconnect the old cell, install the correct replacement and reassemble it. Work slowly, use the specified PH000 driver, and avoid puncturing or bending a lithium battery. If a screw, connector or seal is damaged, stop rather than forcing the assembly; water and dust resistance can be compromised after incorrect reassembly.
Battery life and charging
Sennheiser rates the Momentum True Wireless 5 for up to 12 hours per earbud charge and up to 40 hours total with the charging case. Tom’s Guide presents the same 12-hour/40-hour figures with ANC off. These are manufacturer-rated endurance figures, not independent laboratory measurements; ANC use, codec, volume, spatial audio and call time can reduce runtime.

- Earbuds: up to 12 hours per charge.
- System total: up to 40 hours including the case.
- Quick charge: an eight-minute charge provides up to one hour of playback.
- Case charging: Qi wireless charging is supported.
Replaceable cells make these figures more meaningful over several years: when capacity eventually falls, you can replace the worn battery rather than replacing the entire earbud set. The published evidence does not establish a guaranteed number of charge cycles or a replacement procedure time.
Sound quality and spatial audio
The Momentum True Wireless 5 uses 7 mm proprietary drivers with a stated 20 Hz–20 kHz frequency response. It supports Bluetooth 6.0 and aptX Lossless, plus a 24-bit/96 kHz high-resolution mode. Compatible phones and music sources are required to benefit from the higher-quality codec modes; otherwise playback falls back to the formats negotiated by the device.
Tom’s Guide described the sound as “awesome,” highlighting the combination of aptX Lossless and Dolby Atmos head tracking. Dolby Atmos tracking changes the apparent position of audio as you move your head, creating a more speaker-like presentation for supported content. It is an immersive option rather than a guarantee that every recording will sound better, and it can affect battery use.

ANC, transparency and wind handling
Adaptive hybrid ANC adjusts to surrounding noise, while an automatic anti-wind mode is designed to reduce turbulence-related noise. In everyday use, Tom’s Guide found that ANC removed most environmental sound but allowed some low-frequency rumble and high-frequency noise through. That makes it effective for commuting and offices, but not the strongest isolation available; the review specifically pointed to Bose’s QC Ultra Gen 2 as the better choice when maximum ANC is the priority.
Transparency controls are available in Sennheiser’s Smart Control Plus app. The earbuds also provide sound zones, allowing settings to change by location or context. These controls are useful if you move between travel, work and outdoor listening without wanting to adjust every mode manually.
Call quality and microphones
Sennheiser built the earbuds around a four-microphone array, with six microphones and two bone-conduction voice accelerometers used for voice capture and processing. The system includes AI-powered speech extraction or voice isolation intended to separate your voice from surrounding sound.

In Tom’s Guide’s hands-on call test, the reviewer heard a clear voice without metallic coloration or echo. A loud city-noise track was not audible to the other caller. That is strong evidence for noisy streets and cafés, although call quality still depends on phone Bluetooth implementation, network conditions and how the earbuds fit.

The bean-shaped earbuds use a snug fit. Tom’s Guide expects that shape to suit normal-to-large ears but warns that people with very small ears may struggle. Use the Smart Control Plus app’s fit test before judging sound or ANC: a poor seal can reduce bass and noise isolation even when the hardware is working correctly.

The earbuds carry an IP54 rating for dust and weather protection. IP54 is not waterproofing for swimming or showering, and the charging case’s protection should not be assumed to match the earbuds. Keep the case and opened battery compartments away from liquid, especially after service.

Smart Control Plus app and everyday features
The companion app includes a fit test, personalized equalizer, head-tracking controls, transparency settings and sound zones. Wear detection pauses or resumes playback when you remove or replace an earbud. Multipoint lets the earbuds maintain connections with two devices, which is useful when switching between a phone and computer.
These features make the Momentum True Wireless 5 more adaptable than a set that relies only on a phone’s Bluetooth menu. They also mean that the best experience depends on configuring the app, selecting supported codec modes and deciding whether immersive audio or maximum battery life matters more for a particular session.
Who should buy it?
- Choose it if: you prioritize detailed sound, strong call clarity, aptX Lossless, head-tracked Dolby Atmos and a product designed for battery replacement.
- Consider alternatives if: maximum ANC is more important than sound or repairability, or your ears are very small and a snug bean-shaped housing is uncomfortable.
- Check before ordering: the current regional price, stock, BA 501/BA 502 availability, phone support for aptX Lossless and your return window for fit testing.
Bottom line
At $299.95, the Momentum True Wireless 5 is expensive, but its replaceable earbud and case batteries give it a durability advantage that most premium earbuds lack. The package combines excellent reported sound, clear calls, capable everyday ANC, Bluetooth 6.0, lossless audio and useful spatial features. Buy it for long-term ownership and audio quality—not for the absolute strongest ANC or a universally comfortable fit.

Can I replace the Momentum True Wireless 5 batteries myself?
Yes. Sennheiser specifies end-user replacement with a Phillips PH000 screwdriver. BA 501 contains the two earbud batteries, and BA 502 is the charging-case battery.
Does the 12-hour battery rating include ANC?
The 12-hour-per-earbud and 40-hour-with-case figures are rated maximums; Tom’s Guide lists them with ANC off. Actual runtime varies with ANC, codec, volume, spatial audio and calls.
Is the Momentum True Wireless 5 waterproof?
The earbuds are rated IP54 for dust and weather protection. That does not make them suitable for swimming or deliberate water immersion, and the case should be kept dry.
