The Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 is a strong choice if you value detailed, spacious sound and earbuds designed for battery replacement. Its adaptive noise cancelling is useful, but independent testing does not put it among the very best. Sound is another matter of taste: one reviewer praised its precision while noting that treble can sound hard-edged.
The 2026 redesign also brings a new case, anti-wind processing, transparency features and Dolby Atmos with head tracking. The key buying question is whether those strengths—and the promise of replaceable batteries—matter more to you than top-tier ANC or a smoother high-frequency presentation.
What changed in the Momentum True Wireless 5?
Sennheiser announced the MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 on August 20, 2026, describing it as a top-to-bottom redesign. The company lists a redesigned earbud and case, adaptive hybrid ANC, automatic anti-wind mode, real-time transparency, Dolby Atmos with interactive head tracking, and replaceable batteries in both earbuds and the Qi-enabled case. How do the MTW 5 sound?
What Hi-Fi praises the MTW 5 for spaciousness, detail, precision and dynamic handling. In its comparison, the Sony WF-1000XM6 sounds more textured and expressive. The reviewer also finds that cymbals or edgy strings can come across as slightly hard-edged in the Sennheisers’ upper treble; adjusting the in-app EQ may help if you are sensitive to that range. These are that publication’s listening impressions, not a universal response. What Hi-Fi review

Sennheiser characterizes its tuning as retaining the family sound while refining the midrange, bass control and upper treble. The earbuds support aptX Adaptive, aptX Lossless and wireless audio options up to 24-bit/96 kHz, as well as Dolby Atmos spatial audio with head tracking. Actual playback depends on the phone or other source, software, content and settings; those specifications do not mean every device or streaming service will provide lossless or high-resolution audio. Are noise cancelling, fit and calls good enough?
Noise cancelling and transparency
RTINGS reports that the ANC reduces noise across the frequency spectrum and is useful for travel and office work, but falls short of the very best noise-cancelling earbuds. Sennheiser’s feature set includes Adaptive ANC, anti-wind processing and Natural Transparency. The available assessments do not establish that transparency performance leads the category. Fit and durability
RTINGS found the redesigned fit comfortable and stable, including during workouts, and lists IP54 resistance. SoundGuys says its reviewer tried different tip sizes and was comfortable listening for several hours. Ear shape and tip choice still affect the seal and comfort, so the reviewers’ experience cannot guarantee your fit. RTINGS review SoundGuys review
Calls
Sennheiser says its call processing combines microphones, bone-conduction voice sensors and AI speech extraction. In SoundGuys’ two-week review, call noise attenuation was generally good, with echoes and wind as exceptions. That is a reported test experience, not a guarantee of clear calls in every setting. How long does the battery last—and can you replace it?
Sennheiser claims up to 12 hours of continuous playback per charge and up to 40 hours with the case. It also says an eight-minute quick charge can provide up to one hour of listening. These are manufacturer maximums and depend on usage and settings. RTINGS measured 6.5 hours of continuous playback with ANC enabled; that test condition is different from Sennheiser’s maximum claim, so the figures should not be treated as a like-for-like comparison. The distinctive ownership feature is that Sennheiser says the batteries in both earbuds and the charging case are replaceable. SoundGuys describes the cells as proprietary and reports that access to the case battery involves removing its bottom plate and one screw; replacement cells must be obtained from Sennheiser. The supplied tool makes the design more serviceable, but does not establish that cells are in stock or available in every region. Check local supply and service terms before buying if battery replacement is central to your decision. Sennheiser announcement SoundGuys review Sennheiser US product page

The evidence supports a priority-based comparison, not a single overall winner. What Hi-Fi directly compares sound with Sony’s WF-1000XM6 and identifies Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Generation) and Technics EAH-AZ100 as alternatives. SoundGuys also names Apple AirPods Pro 3 among close competitors when replaceable batteries are not the priority. What Hi-Fi review SoundGuys review

Who should buy the Momentum True Wireless 5?
- Consider it if detailed, spacious sound appeals to you and user-replaceable batteries are a meaningful ownership advantage.
- Compare carefully if you are sensitive to sharp treble or want the strongest available ANC.
- Check before buying if calls in wind or echo-prone rooms are a priority, or if you rely on specific codecs or spatial-audio features; performance and compatibility depend on conditions and devices.
- Verify locally if you expect to replace a battery later: the design is replaceable, but current regional cell availability and service terms are not established here.
At $299.95, SoundGuys reports the MTW 5’s original price; that is not a verified current offer. SoundGuys review
