For frequent flights, noisy offices and regular video calls, the Sony WH-1000XM6 is the safer default. Comparative testing finds that Sony delivers stronger active noise cancellation (ANC), clearer microphone performance and a lower carrying weight. The Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless is the better choice when your priorities are exceptional ANC-on endurance, USB-C audio, wider high-quality codec support and a battery you can replace.
The decision is therefore less about which headphone is universally “better” and more about which compromise fits your routine. Sony’s published battery figure is up to 30 hours with noise cancelling enabled, while Sennheiser claims up to 57 hours in the same mode. Sony weighs about 254 grams versus approximately 291 grams for the Sennheiser. Those differences become significant on a long flight or a day of meetings.
Quick verdict: Sony for noise and calls, Sennheiser for endurance and longevity
Choose the Sony WH-1000XM6 if you routinely fly, work in an open-plan office or spend much of the day in video meetings. Its stronger ANC is the decisive advantage in aircraft-cabin noise and office chatter, and comparative testing reports a better microphone system. The lower weight also makes Sony easier to carry and wear for long stretches.
Choose the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless if you often travel between outlets, listen over USB-C, own a device that supports aptX Adaptive or aptX Lossless, or plan to keep the headphones for many years. Its up-to-57-hour ANC battery claim is unusually high, and comparative reviewers identify both USB audio and a user-replaceable battery as practical longevity benefits. It is also positioned as the lower-price/value option, although the amount you pay depends on your country, retailer and current promotion.

Battery figures are maximum manufacturer claims rather than a guarantee for every listening pattern. Codec choice, volume, wireless conditions, temperature and call use can reduce runtime. Treat the table as a planning guide, not a promise of exactly 57 or 30 hours in your own routine.
Which has better ANC on a plane?
Sony has the advantage. SoundGuys’ comparative testing finds the WH-1000XM6’s ANC stronger than the MOMENTUM 5’s. That distinction matters most in an aircraft, where low-frequency engine rumble continues for hours and a small performance edge can reduce the volume you need to hear music or spoken audio.
Aircraft cabins
For a frequent flyer, the most useful ANC behavior is consistent attenuation of the cabin’s broadband and low-frequency noise rather than a spectacular result in one narrow test. Sony is the safer pick when the goal is to make engine noise less intrusive across an entire flight. It also weighs roughly 37 grams less, which reduces the load in a carry-on and may feel easier on your head during a long journey.
Sennheiser still provides hybrid adaptive ANC and a transparency mode. Its eight microphones give the system substantial sensing hardware, but the cited head-to-head testing gives Sony the final edge in measured overall ANC performance. Do not assume that a larger microphone count automatically means better isolation; tuning, seal and signal processing all affect what you hear.
Trains, cafés and open offices
In mixed environments, Sony’s advantage remains the more dependable choice when you cannot control the surroundings. Open-plan offices combine voices, keyboard noise and air-conditioning, and the microphone system also affects how much of that environment reaches your callers. The MOMENTUM 5 can still be effective, especially when its ear-pad seal fits you well, but comparative evidence does not support choosing it specifically for the strongest isolation.
Fit is part of ANC
Neither specification sheet can predict your individual seal. Glasses, hair, ear shape and pad position can create gaps that reduce bass attenuation on either model. If possible, test both with your usual eyewear and in your normal listening position. A lighter headphone with a secure seal can be more comfortable than a heavier one that has to be adjusted repeatedly.
Which is better for work calls?
The Sony WH-1000XM6 is the safer work-call choice. SoundGuys reports a better microphone system on Sony, and its stronger handling of surrounding noise is useful when you join a meeting from a shared office, airport lounge or street-side café.

Microphone quality is not simply about making your voice louder. The headset must separate speech from fans, nearby conversations and keyboard clicks while avoiding an unnatural, processed sound. The Sony comparison advantage covers that practical combination. If your calls regularly happen in unpredictable locations, this is more valuable than a codec specification that your meeting application may not use.

Sennheiser equips the MOMENTUM 5 with beamforming microphones and Own Voice Detection. Those features are designed to focus on the wearer and manage speech awareness, and they can be useful in quieter rooms. However, the available comparative testing still places Sony ahead for microphone performance overall. Buyers who spend several hours a day in calls should weigh that evidence more heavily than the Sennheiser’s longer battery claim.
Calls consume more battery
Sony publishes separate communication-time figures: up to 24 hours with noise cancelling on and up to 28 hours with it off. That is lower than its music-playback maximum because microphones and voice processing are active. Sennheiser’s supplied product information does not provide a comparable communication-time number, so you should not infer that its 57-hour music figure equals 57 hours of meetings.
Battery life: the Sennheiser advantage is substantial
The MOMENTUM 5 has the clear endurance lead. Sennheiser specifies up to 57 hours with ANC on, while Sony specifies up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on. On paper, that is 27 additional hours before a recharge—nearly enough to cover two more typical workdays or several long-haul segments.

What the numbers mean in practice
If you listen for eight hours per travel day with ANC enabled, Sony’s maximum works out to roughly three and three-quarter days, while Sennheiser’s maximum approaches seven days. Actual results vary with volume, calls, temperature and wireless features, but the relative difference remains meaningful. A traveler who forgets to charge on Friday has a much better chance of reaching Monday with the Sennheiser.
Sony also claims up to 40 hours with noise cancelling disabled. That is useful for quiet rooms, but turning ANC off is not a realistic substitute for a traveler who bought headphones primarily to suppress aircraft noise. Compare the ANC-on figures when that is your normal mode.
Charging and emergency use
The supplied specifications do not establish charging times or a specific quick-charge result for either model, so do not rely on an unverified “minutes for hours” expectation. Pack a USB-C cable and charge before departure if you choose Sony; choose Sennheiser when minimizing charging frequency matters more than minimizing carry weight.
Connectivity, codecs and USB-C audio
Sennheiser’s wireless and wired flexibility
The MOMENTUM 5 supports Bluetooth 5.4, AAC, aptX Adaptive and aptX Lossless. aptX Adaptive can adjust performance to connection conditions, while aptX Lossless is relevant only when both the source device and the playback path support it. Bluetooth version numbers alone do not determine sound quality; the codec negotiated by your phone, computer or tablet does.
Sennheiser also supports USB-C audio. That lets a compatible computer or mobile device send digital audio through the cable instead of relying on Bluetooth. USB listening can be useful on aircraft with a laptop, in offices where wireless radios are restricted, or when you want to avoid Bluetooth latency. The comparison sources identify this as a longevity and connectivity advantage, although the supplied information does not establish every supported USB audio mode or device compatibility list.

Sony’s codec coverage
The WH-1000XM6 supports Bluetooth 5.3 with SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3. LDAC can carry higher-bitrate audio on compatible Android devices and settings, while AAC is widely used across Apple hardware. LC3 is associated with newer Bluetooth LE Audio systems, but support depends on the source device and operating system. Sony’s codec list is broad, yet the practical benefit depends on the devices you actually use.
The supplied Sony specifications do not establish USB-C audio support. If connecting a cable for digital listening is a requirement, the Sennheiser is the less ambiguous choice based on the cited comparisons.
Weight, comfort and packing for travel
Comparative testing reports approximately 254 g for Sony and 291 g for Sennheiser. The 37 g difference may sound small, but it is present every minute the headphones sit on your head and every time they go into your bag. Sony therefore has the advantage for travelers who prioritize low carry weight and long wearing sessions.

Long flights
Weight is only one part of comfort. Clamp force, pad depth, heat buildup and the shape of the headband determine whether you can wear a headset for six or ten hours. The available sources establish the weight difference and performance results, not a universal comfort winner. Try both models if you are sensitive to pressure or have a larger frame; the nominally lighter Sony may fit you better, but that cannot be guaranteed from specifications.
Folding and storage
Both are over-ear travel headphones designed for carrying, but the supplied material does not provide a verified hinge configuration, folded dimensions or case measurements. Do not buy a case based on a generic “fits most” claim without checking the model’s actual folded shape. If your bag has a tight electronics compartment, compare the included case and folded footprint at the retailer or manufacturer before ordering.
Battery replacement and long-term ownership
Sennheiser has an important durability advantage: RTINGS and SoundGuys identify the MOMENTUM 5’s battery as user-replaceable. A replaceable cell can extend the useful life of the headset after its original battery loses capacity, reducing the chance that the entire headphone becomes impractical simply because it no longer lasts a workday.
The cited comparisons do not identify the Sony battery as user-replaceable. That does not predict a particular failure date, but it makes Sennheiser the more defensible choice if you plan to keep one pair for many years or operate far from service centers. Check local parts and service availability before purchase; replaceability is valuable only if replacement hardware and instructions are accessible in your region.

Sound and listening features
Sennheiser lists a 42 mm dynamic driver and Dolby Atmos spatial audio. The driver size is a physical specification, not a direct ranking of sound quality. Tuning, equalization, fit and the recording itself matter more than diameter alone. Dolby Atmos can create a more spacious presentation with compatible content, but the effect depends on the source and the listener.

Sony’s supplied specification set emphasizes ANC, codecs and battery rather than a driver-size figure, so a direct driver comparison is not established here. The safest approach is to choose by your listening preference: audition the two with familiar tracks, spoken podcasts and films instead of assuming that a codec or driver number guarantees a preferred sound.
Price and value without a misleading fixed figure
Comparative reviewers position the MOMENTUM 5 as the lower-price/value option and the WH-1000XM6 as the premium option. What Hi-Fi? describes Sennheiser’s feature set and battery as strong for its price, while recommending Sony for buyers seeking the stronger return from a larger investment. SoundGuys reaches a similar practical conclusion: Sennheiser is the value choice, while Sony earns its higher price through ANC, call quality and overall performance.
Headphone prices and stock change by country, retailer and promotion. Check the live price in your market rather than relying on an old review figure. The premium is easier to justify when you fly often or take calls in noisy places; the Sennheiser’s value improves when you would otherwise need a spare pair, frequent charging or an early battery replacement.

How to choose before you buy
- Identify your noisiest environment. If it is an airplane or shared office, give Sony’s ANC and call advantage priority. If noise is occasional and charging is difficult, continue evaluating Sennheiser.
- Measure your real listening day. Add music, podcasts and meeting time with ANC enabled. A headset rated for 30 hours may be enough for you, while a 57-hour model may be unnecessary—or essential—if you travel for days.
- Check your source devices. Confirm whether your phone and computer support LDAC, aptX Adaptive, aptX Lossless, LC3 or only AAC/SBC. Do not pay for a codec your main devices cannot negotiate.
- Decide whether USB audio is mandatory. Choose Sennheiser if USB-C listening is a firm requirement based on the cited specifications. Sony’s supplied specification information does not establish that feature.
- Test the physical fit. Wear each model with your glasses, hairstyle and normal posture. Listen for at least several minutes and check whether the pads create a complete seal without excessive clamp.
- Price the ownership period. Compare current regional prices, warranty terms, replacement-battery access and return windows. A cheaper initial purchase is not automatically better value if the headset will be used heavily for many years.
Common pitfalls
Choosing by battery number alone
The 57-hour and 30-hour figures are maximum ANC-on claims, not standardized independent measurements. Call time is different from music time, and Sony explicitly publishes lower communication figures. Use the claim to estimate charging frequency, not to predict an exact number of meetings.
Assuming every codec works everywhere
A headset cannot force a phone or computer to use a codec it does not support. Operating-system settings, wireless conditions and application behavior can change the negotiated mode. Keep AAC or SBC compatibility in mind even when you own a source capable of a higher-quality codec.
Ignoring fit when evaluating ANC
A gap under an ear pad can erase much of the benefit of either electronic ANC system. Test the seal in the position you will use on a flight, and do not interpret a poor fit as a definitive verdict on the model’s technology.
Expecting a microphone to fix every room
Even Sony’s stronger reported microphone system cannot make a loud room silent to callers. Mute when you are not speaking, position yourself away from hard reflective surfaces and use a quieter location when a meeting is important.

For the title question—travel and work together—the Sony WH-1000XM6 is the more dependable all-round recommendation because its ANC, microphone performance and lower weight address the problems travelers and remote workers encounter most often. Buy the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless instead when 57-hour ANC endurance, USB-C audio, aptX options, a replaceable battery and a lower price matter more than having the strongest isolation and call quality.
