Sony WH-1000XM5 is the better choice if your first priority is the strongest possible active noise cancellation. Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 is the better fit if you value much longer battery life, aptX Adaptive support and a sound-focused value proposition. The MOMENTUM 4 is rated for up to 60 hours with ANC enabled, while the WH-1000XM5 is rated for up to 30 hours with noise canceling on. That makes the Sennheiser the endurance winner, but it does not make it the better headphone for every listener.
Independent comparisons from SoundGuys, RTINGS and TechRadar consistently find that Sony blocks more outside noise. SoundGuys, however, characterizes the MOMENTUM 4 as having excellent sound and battery life despite middling ANC. The right purchase therefore depends on whether you notice airplane, train and office noise more than you notice charging intervals and codec support.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 has the advantage. SoundGuys, RTINGS and TechRadar each describe Sony’s noise blocking as stronger than the MOMENTUM 4’s. If your main reason for buying over-ear wireless headphones is to reduce aircraft engine rumble, train noise, HVAC systems or a busy office, the Sony is the safer choice.

What Sony’s lead means in practice
Noise cancellation is not a single laboratory score that predicts every environment. Headphones use microphones to monitor outside sound and generate an opposing signal. The result depends on the frequency of the noise, how consistently the ear cups seal, how the headphones sit on your head and whether the sound is continuous or unpredictable. Sony’s advantage is an overall comparative judgment, not a promise that it will remove every sound.
Steady low-frequency noise is usually the easiest target for ANC. Voices, keyboard clicks, clattering dishes and sudden sounds are more difficult for any headset because they change quickly and can also leak through the physical seal. A stronger ANC system can still make those environments less tiring, but it should not be treated as silence.
When the MOMENTUM 4 can still be sufficient
The MOMENTUM 4’s hybrid adaptive ANC is useful when you want to reduce general background noise without making maximum attenuation your deciding criterion. On a commute or in an office, it can lower the constant noise floor enough for music or podcasts to remain intelligible. The trade-off is that comparative testing places it behind the WH-1000XM5 in overall blocking performance.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Fit can narrow or widen the perceived gap. Hair, glasses, a low seal around the jaw or an incorrectly positioned cup can let noise in before the electronics have a chance to counter it. If two people report different ANC results, that does not necessarily contradict the published comparisons; their head shape, seal and environment may simply differ.
Is the MOMENTUM 4 battery really twice as long?
On the manufacturers’ rated ANC-on figures, yes: Sennheiser specifies up to 60 hours of music playback via Bluetooth with ANC enabled, while Sony specifies a maximum of 30 hours with noise canceling on. Sixty is twice 30, so the MOMENTUM 4 has a two-to-one advantage on that particular rating.
Sennheiser’s stated test condition is an iPhone at mid volume. Sony’s specification states “Max 30 hrs (NC ON), Max 40 hrs (NC OFF).” These are maximum or up-to figures rather than guarantees for every listener, and the manufacturers do not present the numbers as a controlled, same-device comparison. Your volume, codec, call time, temperature, signal strength and use of other features can reduce actual runtime.
How the difference changes ownership
- Frequent travel: the MOMENTUM 4 is less likely to require a charge during a long trip when ANC remains on for the entire journey.
- Daily commuting: either model can cover repeated commutes, but the Sennheiser leaves substantially more time between charging sessions on its rated figure.
- Occasional use: the Sony’s lower endurance may not matter if you recharge routinely and value its stronger isolation more.
- ANC-off listening: Sony’s published maximum rises to 40 hours with noise canceling off. Sennheiser’s cited specification does not provide a separate ANC-off number, so there is no equivalent figure to compare.
Do not turn the rating into a promise that the Sennheiser will always last exactly twice as long. Treat it as a clear endurance advantage under the manufacturers’ stated conditions, with real-world results varying by use.

Bluetooth, codecs and source-device compatibility
Both headphones use Bluetooth 5.2, so the decision is not about which has the newer Bluetooth generation. The meaningful difference is the codec list.
| Codec | MOMENTUM 4 | WH-1000XM5 |
|---|---|---|
| SBC | Supported | Supported |
| AAC | Supported | Supported |
| aptX | Supported | Not listed in the cited Sony specification |
| aptX Adaptive | Supported | Not listed in the cited Sony specification |
| LDAC | Not listed in the cited Sennheiser specification | Supported |
Choose aptX Adaptive if your equipment supports it
aptX Adaptive is the differentiator for the MOMENTUM 4. It can be attractive to listeners whose phone, tablet or computer explicitly supports that codec and who want a higher-quality Bluetooth option than the basic fallback codecs. Support must exist on both the source device and the headphones; buying a compatible headset alone does not activate a codec that the source cannot transmit.
Choose LDAC if your source is set up for it
LDAC is Sony’s listed higher-bandwidth option. As with aptX Adaptive, the source device must offer LDAC and be configured to use it. If the source falls back to SBC or AAC, the presence of LDAC on the specification sheet does not by itself change what you hear.
Codec support is therefore a secondary decision axis behind ANC and battery life. It matters most when you already know which codec your primary phone or computer can use and you care about preserving that choice.

Sound preference is personal, but the comparative evidence gives the MOMENTUM 4 a favorable value position. SoundGuys describes its sound as excellent and its ANC as middling. That combination makes it appealing to listeners who spend more of their time listening to music than trying to eliminate every external sound.
Sony’s case is different: its stronger noise blocking can make music seem clearer in a noisy place because less outside sound competes with the recording. A quieter background can be more important than a small tonal difference when you listen on a plane or beside a road. In a quiet room, that ANC advantage matters less and your preferred tuning becomes more important.
Use your listening environment to break a tie
- For mostly quiet rooms, prioritize the sound signature you prefer and the codec your source supports.
- For planes, rail travel and open offices, Sony’s stronger isolation can have a larger practical effect than codec differences.
- For long sessions away from a charger, the MOMENTUM 4’s endurance can outweigh a modest ANC advantage.
Neither model can be declared universally “better sounding” from the available comparisons. SoundGuys’ favorable assessment supports the Sennheiser as a sound-and-value choice, not as an objective winner for every genre, recording or listener.

Price and value: use MSRP only as context
SoundGuys lists 2025 MSRP at $449.95 for the MOMENTUM 4 and $399.99 for the WH-1000XM5. Those figures establish the launch-position relationship reported at that time, but they are not current price quotes. Promotions, regional pricing, inventory and product revisions can change the amount you actually pay.

How to compare a live deal
- Check the price of both models on the same day and in the same currency.
- Confirm that each listing is the exact model, not an older generation, refurbished unit or bundle with different warranty terms.
- Include shipping, taxes, return costs and warranty coverage before declaring one the better value.
- Compare the price premium with your priority: paying more for the MOMENTUM 4 makes more sense when its battery and codec advantages will be used, while paying more for Sony makes more sense when maximum ANC is the reason for buying.
A lower transaction price can reverse the value judgment suggested by MSRP. Conversely, a small discount does not make the MOMENTUM 4 a better ANC purchase if isolation is your non-negotiable requirement.
Comfort and fit: why there is no universal winner
The available comparison does not establish a standardized head-to-head comfort measurement, so comfort should be treated as fit-dependent rather than awarded to one brand. Clamp force, head width, ear size, glasses, hair and how warm the ear cups feel can change the result from one listener to another.
What to check during a return window
- Wear the headphones for at least the length of your normal commute or listening session, not just a few minutes.
- Check whether your ears remain fully inside the pads and whether the seal changes when you turn your head.
- Listen with ANC on and off; an imperfect seal can make both isolation and bass seem weaker.
- Try them with glasses if you normally wear them, since the frame can create a gap.
- Confirm that the return policy covers opened headphones before buying, because comfort cannot be determined reliably from specifications.
These checks do not change the comparative ANC result, but they determine how much of each model’s potential you actually experience.
Which one should you buy?
Buy the Sony WH-1000XM5 when isolation comes first
Choose the WH-1000XM5 if your first question is “Which blocks the most outside noise?” Three independent comparisons—SoundGuys, RTINGS and TechRadar—place Sony ahead on noise blocking. The 30-hour ANC-on rating is shorter than Sennheiser’s, but it may be an acceptable trade if you recharge regularly and spend much of your listening time in loud environments.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBuy the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 when endurance and codecs matter
Choose the MOMENTUM 4 if a long interval between charges is more valuable than the strongest possible ANC. Its up-to-60-hour ANC-on rating is the decisive battery advantage, and its support for aptX, aptX Adaptive and Bluetooth 5.2 gives compatible source devices more codec choices than the Sony specification lists. SoundGuys’ favorable sound-and-value assessment reinforces that choice for music-first listening.
Choose by the problem you are trying to solve
| Your main problem | Better starting choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Aircraft or train noise is distracting you | WH-1000XM5 | Comparative reviews consistently find stronger ANC |
| You forget to charge headphones | MOMENTUM 4 | Rated up to 60 hours with ANC versus Sony’s maximum 30 hours with ANC |
| Your source device supports aptX Adaptive | MOMENTUM 4 | That codec is listed for Sennheiser and not in Sony’s cited specification |
| Your source device is configured for LDAC | WH-1000XM5 | LDAC is listed for Sony and not in Sennheiser’s cited specification |
| You want the sound-and-battery value favored by SoundGuys | MOMENTUM 4 | SoundGuys describes its sound and battery life as excellent |
| You have no fixed priority and the prices are close | Decide on ANC versus endurance first | The core trade-off is more important than the historical MSRP gap |
A practical buying checklist
- Rank your first priority. Pick ANC, battery endurance, codec compatibility or price before looking at discounts.
- Verify your source codec. Check the Bluetooth audio settings or documentation for the phone, tablet or computer you use most. Select a headphone whose listed codec your source can actually transmit.
- Compare current prices. Treat the 2025 MSRP figures as historical context, not as a promise of today’s price.
- Plan for your real usage. If you routinely spend more than a day away from power with ANC on, the Sennheiser rating gives you substantially more headroom. If every session is in a noisy place, Sony’s isolation may save you more frustration.
- Protect your fit. Buy from a seller with a clear return policy and test the seal, glasses compatibility and long-session comfort.
- Judge the result in your normal environment. A quiet bedroom can hide the reason to buy stronger ANC; an airplane can hide the sound differences you notice at home.
Final verdict
The Sony WH-1000XM5 is the better noise-canceling headphone because independent comparisons consistently find that it blocks more external sound. The Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 is the better all-round value for listeners who prioritize up to 60 hours of ANC-on battery life, aptX Adaptive and a sound-first experience. Its battery rating is twice Sony’s ANC-on maximum on paper, but the figures come from separate manufacturer conditions and should not be treated as a guarantee of exactly double real-world runtime.
Buy Sony for maximum isolation; buy Sennheiser for endurance, codec flexibility and sound-focused value. There is no single winner once those priorities are made explicit.
