Discord’s normal upload limit for a non-Nitro account is 20 MB (Discord raised it from 10 MB on 13 August 2026). That is the limit to work around—not the 8 MB, 10 MB or 25 MB limits often mentioned in older guides.
You can still send a larger video without Nitro by shrinking it below 20 MB, uploading it in a server with a higher boost level, or sharing a link to a hosted copy. The best method depends on whether the recipient needs an in-Discord preview or the original-quality file.
Check which limit applies first
Discord’s limit can depend on both your account and the place where you are sending the file.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Where you send the video | Upload limit |
|---|---|
| Normal non-Nitro account | 20 MB |
| Level 2 server | 50 MB for all server members |
| Level 3 server | 100 MB for all server members |
| Nitro Basic account | 50 MB |
| Nitro account | Up to 1 GB |
The Level 2 and Level 3 limits are server-wide. They do not automatically apply to your direct messages, group messages, or other servers. Discord is also experimenting with different upload limits, so some accounts may see a limit different from the standard one. The upload size shown in Discord when you select a file is the practical limit for that particular upload.

Method 1: Compress the video below 20 MB
This is the most dependable no-Nitro option for a DM or an ordinary server. Re-encode the video, reduce its resolution or frame rate if necessary, and make sure the finished file is comfortably below 20 MB. Aim for about 19 MB rather than exactly 20 MB, because file-size rounding and metadata can push a borderline file over the limit.
Using FFmpeg on Windows, macOS, or Linux
FFmpeg is a free command-line video converter. After installing it, run a two-pass conversion for a predictable target size. Replace input.mp4 with your video’s filename:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -vf "scale=-2:720" -r 30 -b:v 700k -c:a aac -b:a 64k -movflags +faststart output.mp4
This example produces an H.264 MP4 at up to 720p, limits the frame rate to 30 fps, and uses relatively low video and audio bitrates. The result may still be larger than 20 MB if the video is long. If it is too large, reduce the video bitrate, resolution, or duration:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -vf "scale=-2:480" -r 24 -b:v 450k -c:a aac -b:a 48k -movflags +faststart output-small.mp4
For a short screen recording or clip, the first command may be enough. Long, high-motion footage needs much more compression than a mostly static screen recording. Check the output file’s size in File Explorer, Finder, or your file manager before attempting the upload.
What to reduce first
- Trim unwanted sections. Removing an introduction, dead air, or repeated footage preserves more quality than compressing the entire video.
- Lower resolution. Moving from 4K to 1080p, or from 1080p to 720p, can substantially reduce the size.
- Lower the frame rate. 30 fps is usually adequate for ordinary clips; 24 fps can reduce the size further.
- Lower the video bitrate. This is the main control for file size, but too much reduction creates blocky motion and blurry text.
- Keep audio modest. Speech generally does not need a high audio bitrate. Do not remove audio if it is important to the clip.
Discord’s current attachment documentation lists MOV and MP4 files encoded with H.264, HEVC/H.265, or AV1. MP4 is generally the safest choice when you want broad playback compatibility, but the container and codec do not override the upload-size limit.

Upload the compressed file on desktop or in a browser
- Open the target text channel, voice-channel text chat, or group message.
- Select the plus sign beside the message field.
- Select Upload a File.
- Choose the compressed video.
- Add optional message text.
- Send the message.
If Discord rejects the file, check its actual size rather than relying on its duration. A 20-second 4K recording can be larger than a several-minute low-resolution clip.
Method 2: Use a Level 2 or Level 3 server
If you have permission to post in a boosted server, you may not need to compress the video at all. A Level 2 server permits uploads up to 50 MB for all members, while a Level 3 server permits up to 100 MB. Nitro is not required for members to use those server limits.

Method 3: Send a link to the original video
For a video that is far above 20 MB—or one where compression would ruin text, gameplay footage, or camera detail—upload it to a file-hosting or cloud-storage service and paste the sharing URL into Discord. Set the link permissions so the intended viewers can open it, then test the link in a private browser window or with a second account.
Discord can show previews for supported website links when link previews are enabled. The setting is:

A link is not the same as a Discord attachment: the recipient may need to open another website, the host may impose its own download limit, and access permissions can stop the file from opening. It is nevertheless the best option when preserving the original file matters more than inline playback.
Upload from a phone without Nitro
Mobile Discord can compress a video during upload. Before sending, choose the quality in:
Avatar in the bottom-right → User Settings → App Settings → Text & Media → Video Uploads
| Setting | Non-Nitro result | Nitro result |
|---|---|---|
| Best Quality | Up to 720p | Up to 1080p |
| Standard | 480p | Up to 720p |
| Data Saver | 360p | 360p |
Standard is Discord’s documented default and recommended setting. Choose Data Saver when the priority is a smaller upload or lower cellular-data use. These settings control compression quality; they do not create an unlimited upload allowance. Discord does not publish one fixed maximum video duration for each setting because the resulting size depends on the source video.

Also check:
Avatar → User Settings → App Settings → Data Consumption → Data Saving Mode
When Data Saving Mode is active on cellular data, it overrides the selected video-upload quality and uses the data-saving quality. On Wi-Fi, your selected Video Uploads setting remains active.
Send the video from mobile
- Open the target text channel, voice-channel text chat, or group message.
- Tap the plus sign in the message field.
- Tap Upload a File.
- Select the video.
- Add optional text and send it.
Mobile compression may mean the uploaded video is not identical to the original. For example, a non-Nitro upload using Best Quality may be limited to 720p. If preserving the original is important, upload it to a file-hosting service and share the link instead.
Why a video upload can fail
- The file is above the applicable limit: A normal non-Nitro upload over 20 MB is expected to fail unless your account is part of an upload-limit experiment or the destination server has a higher boost-level limit.
- You are relying on a server limit in a DM: A boosted server’s 50 MB or 100 MB allowance does not carry over to direct messages.
- The video is technically supported but still too large: MP4 or MOV only describes the file type. Size and codec compatibility still matter.
- The cellular upload is unexpectedly low quality: Data Saving Mode can override your chosen mobile upload setting.
- The file uploads without the expected playable preview: Discord does not guarantee an identical preview for every video codec and container combination. Re-encoding to a standard H.264 MP4 can help, but a link may be preferable for unusual files.
- Several videos look merged together: Multiple videos, images, or GIFs sent in one message are grouped and displayed in a mosaic format. Send them in separate messages if that presentation is undesirable.
Which method should you use?
| Requirement | Best option |
|---|---|
| Short clip under 20 MB | Attach it directly |
| Video between 20 MB and 50 MB | Use a Level 2 server, compress it, or share a link |
| Video between 50 MB and 100 MB | Use a Level 3 server or share a link |
| Original quality must be retained | Share a hosted-file URL |
| Smallest practical mobile upload | Use Data Saver, then verify the resulting file |
FAQ
What is Discord’s free upload limit now?
The normal non-Nitro direct file-upload limit is 20 MB (it was 10 MB until 13 August 2026). Discord is experimenting with different limits for selected accounts, so the limit shown in your app may differ.
Can I send a 50 MB video on Discord without Nitro?
Yes, if you send it in a Level 2 server, which provides a 50 MB upload limit for all server members. That server limit does not apply to DMs or unrelated servers.

Can changing mobile video quality bypass Discord’s size limit?
No. Best Quality, Standard, and Data Saver control compression. Discord still applies the relevant account or server upload limit.
What is the easiest way to send a large video in a DM?
Compress it to below 20 MB and attach it, or upload the original to a file-hosting service and paste a shareable link. A boosted server limit does not apply to a DM.
Does Discord have a maximum video length?
Discord does not publish one universal maximum duration for its mobile quality settings. The maximum length varies with resolution, bitrate, codec, motion, and the resulting file size.

The Bottom Line
Without Nitro, first try the direct route: compress the video to about 19 MB, then use plus sign → Upload a File. If the destination is a Level 2 or Level 3 server, its 50 MB or 100 MB server-wide limit may be enough. For larger files or videos that must retain their original quality, share a hosted-file link instead.
