You can transfer files without plugging in your phone, but the best method depends on the devices. Use Quick Share for a nearby Android-to-Windows transfer, Phone Link if your Android phone and Windows PC are already paired, or AirDrop between an iPhone and Mac. For combinations that lack a direct sharing option, upload the file to cloud storage on your phone and download it on the computer.
Choose a transfer method for your phone and computer
| Devices | Good starting point | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Android and Windows | Quick Share | Direct nearby sharing; both devices need wireless connectivity and compatible software. |
| Android and Windows, already paired | Phone Link | Send files through the connected PC; locally saved files transfer as files, while cloud-stored items may be sent as links. |
| iPhone and Mac | AirDrop | Nearby sharing between Apple devices; enable AirDrop and select the Mac from the iPhone’s sharing options. |
| Other device combinations | Cloud storage | Upload from the phone, then access or download on the computer; requires an account and internet access. |
There is no substantiated universal speed winner among these methods. Choose based on compatibility, proximity, network restrictions, account needs, and whether you need a one-time copy or continuing access to files.
Send files from Android to Windows with Quick Share
Google’s Quick Share guidance says Android 6.0 or later can share with a 64-bit Windows 10-or-later computer. ARM-based Windows computers require Windows 11 or later. Both devices need Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and Quick Share availability varies by location.
- Install or open Quick Share on the Windows computer. Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the PC.
- On Android, select the file or files, tap Share, then choose Quick Share.
- Select the Windows computer from the devices shown.
- Accept the incoming transfer on the computer and wait for it to finish.
Google’s Quick Share app instructions describe selecting a recipient and accepting the transfer. If installation or device discovery fails, check Google’s compatibility information because availability can differ by location and system.

Use Phone Link to send Android files to a paired PC
Phone Link offers another Android-to-Windows route when the phone and PC are connected. Microsoft’s file-transfer instructions specify Android 10 or later and minimum versions of the Phone Link and Link to Windows apps for the documented sharing feature. Requirements are feature-specific, so check Microsoft’s Phone Link requirements and setup for current details. Pairing typically uses a QR code and the same Microsoft account; Microsoft’s setup guidance also says the devices should be on the same Wi-Fi network.
- On Android, select the file and tap Share.
- Choose Link to Windows – Send to PC.
- Select the connected computer and keep the transfer page open until it completes.
- On Windows, look in
DownloadsPhone Link. You can change the destination folder in Phone Link settings.
A notification appears on the PC when a transfer arrives. Microsoft’s sharing documentation distinguishes local files from cloud content: locally saved items transfer as files, but cloud-stored items are shared as links. Download the item from its cloud service if you need a local copy.

Send files from iPhone to Mac with AirDrop
AirDrop is Apple’s nearby-sharing option for an iPhone and Mac. On the iPhone, open the item’s sharing menu, enable AirDrop if needed, and choose the Mac. Accept the item on the Mac if prompted. Apple’s AirDrop guide for iPhone and AirDrop guide for Mac provide the steps and visibility settings; menu wording and options can vary by operating-system version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse cloud storage when direct sharing is unavailable
Upload the file from the phone using a cloud service, then sign in or open that service on the computer to access or download it. This is an upload followed by a download or cloud access, not a direct local transfer. It requires internet access and an account, and may use mobile data or available cloud storage. Google’s Android file-transfer guidance describes using a Google Account to access files across a computer and device; it directs photos and videos to Google Photos.

Fix common wireless transfer problems
- The computer does not appear in Quick Share: Check Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, visibility settings, and that Quick Share is installed on Windows. Keep the devices nearby; Google recommends bringing them within about 30 cm if discovery is unreliable. Where possible, connect both devices to the same network. See Google’s Quick Share troubleshooting guidance.
- The network blocks Quick Share: Google suggests a phone-hotspot workaround for restrictive networks: turn off Wi-Fi on the phone, enable its hotspot, then connect the computer to that hotspot. This is a troubleshooting option for that network problem, not a requirement for every transfer. Details are in Google’s Quick Share help.
- Phone Link does not send the file: Confirm the phone is paired, the required app versions are installed, and the devices meet the relevant feature requirements. Keep the transfer page open until completion, then check
DownloadsPhone Link. Microsoft lists setup details in its Phone Link requirements guide. - Phone Link sends a link rather than the file: That is expected for cloud-stored content. Open the link and download the item from its cloud service when you need a local copy. Microsoft explains this distinction in its file-sharing guidance.
Phone Link’s separate cross-device clipboard feature is not a substitute for transferring full-resolution originals: Microsoft says it can copy text and images, and images larger than 1 MB are resized. See Microsoft’s feature limits.
