Semtech and Tower Semiconductor have a documented SiGe manufacturing relationship for high-speed optical-networking components used in AI and data-center links. However, the available official announcements do not confirm that Semtech secured a dedicated block of Tower SiGe capacity. They do establish an existing supply relationship and a separate Tower plan to expand silicon-photonics and SiGe capacity in Japan.

What is confirmed about Semtech and Tower

On December 10, 2024, Tower Semiconductor said Semtech recognized it for manufacturing excellence and execution of 2024 wafer shipments. Tower connected the award with high-volume products and demand for SiGe integrated circuits in AI and data-center applications.

Tower described the companies as jointly supplying SiGe products including transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs), modulator and laser drivers, clock-and-data-recovery (CDR) devices, and active-copper-cable (ACC) components. Semtech executive vice president and chief operating officer Asaf Silberstein said Tower’s SiGe solutions had been essential to Semtech’s optical-networking products.

That evidence supports a continuing technology and manufacturing partnership. It does not specify a newly signed reservation, wafer-allocation agreement, volume commitment, facility, price, or contract term dedicated to Semtech.

Why SiGe matters in AI data-center interconnects

Silicon-germanium, or SiGe, is used for high-speed analog and mixed-signal circuits that sit between electrical systems and optical links. In an optical transceiver, these chips condition, amplify, recover, or drive signals as data moves between switches, servers and the fiber plant.

Component Role in an interconnect
Transimpedance amplifier (TIA) Converts the photodetector’s very small current into a usable voltage while supporting high-speed reception.
Driver Supplies the electrical drive signal for an optical modulator or laser, shaping the outgoing data stream.
Clock-and-data recovery (CDR) Reconstructs timing and data from a received high-speed signal.
Active copper cable (ACC) electronics Conditions electrical signals in copper links that include active signal-processing components.

These functions become increasingly important as AI clusters increase link speeds and the number of connections between accelerators, switches and storage systems. The announcements identify the products’ context as high-speed optical networking and AI/data-center connectivity; they do not provide a complete performance comparison with alternative process technologies.

Tower’s 2026 Japan expansion is broader than the Semtech relationship

On July 14, 2026, Tower announced a two-track expansion in Japan supported by the Government of Japan. The plan covers 300mm silicon photonics, SiGe and advanced packaging, but the announcement does not name Semtech as a customer or identify customer-specific SiGe volumes.

Tower’s silicon-photonics programs

Tower said on February 5, 2026, that it was scaling silicon photonics for 1.6T data-center optical modules designed for NVIDIA networking protocols. That is relevant market context, not evidence that Semtech receives dedicated SiGe capacity.

On May 13, 2026, Tower reported signed silicon-photonics contracts representing $1.3 billion of 2027 revenue and $290 million in customer prepayments for capacity reservations. Those figures concern Tower’s silicon-photonics business and are not attributed to Semtech or described as SiGe commitments.

$3.6 billion revenue and $1.2 billion net profit Tower’s 2028 targets in the July expansion announcement Targets, not results
$2.8 billion revenue and $750 million net profit A separate 2028 model discussed in Tower’s May silicon-photonics announcement Different release context; not silently interchangeable with the July targets

Semtech’s September release also reproduced Cignal AI analyst Scott Wilkinson’s estimate that the optical-components market was $9 billion in 2024 and could reach $37 billion in 2026. Those are attributed analyst estimates, not an independently verified market measurement here.

What remains unverified

No Semtech or Tower primary announcement or filing identified in the available material confirms a dedicated SiGe-capacity agreement specifically reserved for Semtech. The unresolved details include whether any arrangement covers wafer starts, a particular facility, product-specific supply, committed volumes, or a fixed term.

Until a dated company statement or securities filing provides those details, the accurate description is narrower: Semtech and Tower have an established SiGe relationship serving AI and data-center interconnects, while Tower is separately pursuing a major Japan capacity expansion.
