A semiconductor is a material whose electrical conductivity can be controlled. That property lets semiconductor devices switch, shape, sense, store, and process electrical signals. Silicon is widely used, but it is not the only semiconductor material.
No answer choices were included with the question, so a specific option cannot be selected. Use the principles below to identify a true statement—or share the choices to pinpoint the correct one.
What is true of semiconductors?
The defining idea is controllable electrical conductivity. Manufacturers process semiconductor materials to create structures with electrical behavior suited to particular functions. A semiconductor is therefore not simply a material that either conducts electricity or does not; its behavior can be engineered for use in electronic devices.
Silicon is a common example, but the statement “all semiconductors are silicon” is false. Gallium arsenide and silicon carbide are also used. The National Science Foundation gives silicon in computer chips and solar panels, gallium arsenide in satellite communications, and silicon carbide in electric vehicles as examples. Those examples show different applications, not a universal performance ranking of the materials. National Science Foundation: semiconductors and silicon.

How does controlled conductivity make electronics work?
Processing creates useful electrical behavior
Chip manufacturing starts with semiconductor wafers, which are processed and patterned using other materials and dopants to form device structures. A wafer is not itself a finished computer chip: it contains multiple dies, which are separated, tested, packaged, and assembled. The Semiconductor Industry Association outlines this production flow in its semiconductor overview.
Transistors switch or shape current
A transistor is a semiconductor device that can act as a switch. NIST describes a transistor as a switch whose on-or-off state depends on changes in voltage; combinations of transistors can form complex devices. NIST’s semiconductor glossary provides that definition.

Integrated circuits combine devices
An integrated circuit combines many semiconductor devices to perform functions such as logic, memory, analog signal handling, or sensing. A chip is a manufactured product built from processed materials—not just a piece of raw silicon.
What kinds of semiconductor devices are there?
Semiconductor devices do more than run computer processors. They are often grouped by what they do:
Rank #3
- Discrete devices: perform a basic electronic function.
- Optoelectronic devices: produce or detect light.
- Sensors and actuators: detect signals or convert electricity into motion.
- Analog devices: translate real-world signals to or from digital data.
- Memory devices: store data or instructions.
- Logic devices: perform logical functions.
A system-on-a-chip may combine several of these categories. The Semiconductor Industry Association describes these device types in its semiconductor overview.

The Semiconductor Industry Association reported $630.5 billion in semiconductor shipments in 2024, with over two-thirds going into computers and communications systems. This is a historical shipment figure for 2024, not a current forecast. SIA’s 2024 shipment report.
Rank #4
In its 2025 report, SIA described modern smartphone chips as having more than 15 billion transistors and chips at the heart of AI data centers as having hundreds of billions. These are broad descriptions in that report, not counts that apply to every smartphone or data-center chip. SIA’s 2025 State of the Industry report.

How to judge a multiple-choice statement
- True in principle: semiconductor conductivity can be controlled, and transistors use semiconductor behavior to switch or shape electrical signals.
- False if stated as an absolute: silicon is the only semiconductor material, or every semiconductor device is a transistor.
- Misleading: a bare silicon wafer is a finished computer chip. A wafer is processed to form devices and later separated into dies.
- Needs qualification: one semiconductor material is always better than another. Application examples do not establish a universal ranking.
