Semantic HTML uses elements to describe what content is and how it fits into a document, rather than choosing tags only for their default appearance. Use <main> for the page’s dominant content, <nav> for navigation, <article> for a self-contained composition, <aside> for tangential supporting material, and <section> for a meaningful general grouping. Use CSS for visual styling.
What semantic HTML does
HTML elements give content structure and purpose. A browser may display some elements with familiar default styling, but their meaning is not determined by how they look. A paragraph remains a paragraph if CSS makes it look like a heading; a generic container does not become a navigation region just because it resembles a menu.
Choose an element by asking what the content does in the document. The WHATWG HTML Living Standard is the normative reference; MDN’s HTML elements reference is a practical lookup. The standard result was updated 5 October 2026.
When to use the main structural elements
<main>: the dominant content
Place the document’s primary content in <main>. As the WHATWG standard puts it, “The main element represents the dominant content of the body of a document.” A page must not have more than one <main> without the hidden attribute. See MDN’s main element reference.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
<nav>: a navigation region
Use <nav> for a section whose purpose is navigation: for example, a site menu, table of contents, or index. It is not a general-purpose wrapper for every group of links. The element is useful when the links form a navigational region rather than incidental links within ordinary prose.
<article>: a composition that can stand alone
Choose <article> for a self-contained composition that could make sense independently of the surrounding page, such as a post or comment. Independence is the key test: if the item could be distributed or understood as a distinct piece, <article> is often appropriate.

<aside>: tangential supporting content
Use <aside> for material related to the surrounding content but not central to its main flow, such as related links or an author bio. If the content is essential to the central explanation, it likely belongs in the main flow instead.
<section>: a meaningful general section
Use <section> to group a meaningful part of a document when no more specific element fits. MDN advises that sections generally have a heading. A section is not simply a box for styling or layout; if the grouping has no particular document meaning, use a generic container such as <div> instead.

MDN’s section element guidance also helps distinguish a standalone composition from a general section and from tangential supporting material.
How to choose between article, section, and aside
| Question | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Can this composition stand on its own? | <article> |
A post or comment |
| Is it related but tangential to the surrounding content? | <aside> |
Related links or an author bio |
| Is it a meaningful document grouping, but neither a standalone composition nor tangential material? | <section> |
A headed part of a longer page |
| Is it grouped only for layout or styling, without a distinct document role? | A generic container, such as <div> |
A layout wrapper |
Apply the tests in this order: identify the content’s purpose, check whether a specific element describes it, then use <section> for a meaningful grouping that lacks a more specific fit. If there is no meaningful semantic grouping at all, use a generic container. Style the result with CSS rather than selecting a semantic element for its appearance.

Headers, footers, and headings
<header> and <footer>
These elements mark introductory or footer material for the page or for their nearest relevant sectioning ancestor. They are not limited to one global page header and one global footer; a section or article can have its own introductory or footer material.

The six heading levels express the hierarchy of sections. Pick a heading level to reflect the content’s place in that hierarchy, not as a shortcut for a desired font size. Use CSS when a heading needs a different visual treatment.

Why semantics matter for accessibility—and what they do not guarantee
Structural elements can expose implicit landmark regions to assistive technology. Landmarks can help users locate major areas of a page; the W3C WAI technique H101: Using semantic HTML elements to identify regions of a page gives <main> and <nav> as examples. This is a technique example, not a complete conformance checklist.
MDN’s Semantic HTML learning material explains that assistive technology can use headings and landmarks as navigation signposts. Those cues help when elements are used for their intended purposes and the heading hierarchy and link text are meaningful. Semantic structure alone does not make every part of a page accessible.
Quick Recap
A quick review before publishing a page
- Does
<main>contain the dominant content, without multiple visible main elements? - Are
<nav>elements reserved for actual navigation regions? - Can each
<article>stand as an independent composition? - Is each
<aside>supporting material tangential to the central content? - Does each
<section>express a meaningful grouping, generally with a heading? - Are headings ordered to communicate content hierarchy, with CSS handling appearance?
- Are generic containers used when a wrapper has no special semantic role?
