You can sell courses on WordPress without WooCommerce by using a learning-management plugin with its own checkout or direct payment integration. LearnDash documents a Stripe checkout; LifterLMS offers its own ecommerce checkout; and MemberPress Courses adds course features to a membership-focused platform. The right fit depends on supported payment methods where you operate, whether you need recurring billing, and how you want to structure course access.
How course sales work without WooCommerce
Instead of routing a course purchase through WooCommerce, you can use an LMS or membership plugin that handles checkout itself or connects directly to a payment gateway. The plugin then grants course access according to the purchase or membership rules you configure. These approaches are not identical: some are centered on course access plans, while others fit a membership-led site.
Before choosing, decide whether learners will pay once or on a recurring schedule, which payment methods you need, and whether you are selling individual courses, memberships, or bundles. Check the platform’s current documentation for the precise checkout features and integrations available to you; capabilities and setup screens can change.

LearnDash says a separate membership plugin is not required for its built-in content protection. That may simplify a course-first setup, but compare its access controls with the membership rules you actually need.

Choose based on how you will sell
If you want direct card checkout
Compare LearnDash’s documented Stripe flow with gateway availability in your country. LearnDash describes connecting an account through its settings, but availability is not universal. Review the current setup instructions and confirm that the account and payment flow you plan to use are supported before launch.
If you need one-time and recurring access plans
Assess LifterLMS’s native ecommerce checkout and the specific payment method you intend to use. A gateway being listed does not by itself establish that every method or configuration supports recurring billing. Confirm recurring-payment support for your chosen method and access plan.

If memberships are the center of your site
MemberPress Courses may be a candidate when course access is part of a broader membership setup. Check the current cart experience and steps in the product documentation; the referenced guide labels the shopping cart beta, so do not assume every site will see identical labels or behavior.
If you need a gateway or cart feature not listed
Inspect each product’s current integration list before committing. LearnDash lists additional ecommerce integrations, and LifterLMS describes WooCommerce as an alternative ecommerce system. An integration may change the checkout route and setup requirements, so verify that it supports your intended payment method and sales model rather than assuming the native checkout does.

Set up and verify the sales path
- Define the offer. Decide whether the learner buys a single course, a recurring access plan, a membership, a bundle, or a presale.
- Confirm payment availability. Check that your chosen gateway and payment method are available for your business location and can handle the intended billing model.
- Choose one checkout approach. Select the LMS’s native checkout or a documented integration that meets your needs. For LifterLMS, its documentation says to choose either LifterLMS ecommerce or WooCommerce rather than treating them as a single checkout.
- Follow the current product setup guide. For LearnDash Stripe Connect, use the product’s current instructions to connect the payment account from LearnDash settings. Labels and screens can change.
- Test the learner journey before launch. Verify the purchase flow, payment confirmation, and course access using the actual configuration you plan to publish. Ensure recurring plans behave as intended before offering them to customers.
What to verify before committing
- Gateway support: Is the payment provider available where your business operates?
- Billing model: Does the selected method support recurring payments if you are charging on a schedule?
- Access structure: Do you need course-level sales, memberships, bundles, or a combination?
- Checkout behavior: Does the documented cart flow match the experience you want, and is any relevant feature marked beta?
- Current terms: Check the vendor’s live documentation for features, plan inclusions, fees, and availability; these are not established here and may change.
