Self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) is a version of dark matter in which particles can scatter off one another instead of behaving as perfectly collisionless matter. Those collisions can move heat through a galaxy’s halo, lowering its central density and producing a broad, nearly constant-density core. Simulations show that suitably chosen interactions can change the inner structure of dwarf and low-surface-brightness galaxies while leaving large-scale clustering and halo abundances close to the predictions of cold dark matter (CDM).

SIDM is not established as the correct dark-matter theory. Dwarf-galaxy cores provide motivation, while cluster densities, halo shapes, merging systems and rare small-scale collisions impose complementary constraints. The key question is whether one interaction law—often with a velocity-dependent cross-section—can explain all scales once ordinary matter and observational systematics are modeled consistently.

What SIDM changes compared with ordinary cold dark matter

In the simplest CDM picture, dark-matter particles interact gravitationally but almost never collide. Their halo settles into a centrally concentrated profile, often approximated by a cusp. SIDM adds non-gravitational scattering. The relevant quantity is the interaction cross-section divided by dark-matter mass, written σ/m and measured in square centimetres per gram (cm² g⁻¹).

A collision does not make dark matter behave like a conventional gas on every scale. In the weak-scattering regime, particles still orbit through a halo, but occasional deflections redistribute energy and momentum. Particles in the hotter, denser inner region can transfer energy outward. That heat transport lowers the central phase-space density and can turn a cusp into a core. If scattering is very strong or persists for a long time, the direction of heat flow can eventually reverse: the centre loses energy, contracts and enters gravothermal core collapse.

The attractive feature is scale separation. A cross-section near the level explored in cosmological simulations can substantially alter inner kiloparsec-scale structure while preserving the subhalo population, large-scale clustering and circular-velocity statistics that make CDM successful. As Matthew R. Buckley and colleagues reported in a 2013 study, “the subhalo content of SIDM haloes is only modestly reduced compared to CDM.”

How the interaction strength is measured

σ/m combines the microscopic scattering area with the particle mass, so astrophysical limits can be stated without knowing the dark-matter particle’s identity. The same value can have different consequences in halos with different densities, ages and velocity distributions. A constant cross-section is therefore only one model class; many viable constructions use a velocity-dependent interaction.

Cross-section per mass What the cited studies found How to interpret it
0.02 cm² g⁻¹ An earlier halo-shape limit discussed by Peter and collaborators The limit was revised upward when halo evolution and modeling were treated more carefully.
At least 0.1 cm² g⁻¹ The same line of work found that values at this scale could remain compatible with halo-shape information Halo shape alone does not exclude all interactions strong enough to affect dwarf galaxies.
0.1 cm² g⁻¹ A 2013 cosmological-simulation study found this scale capable of matching reported core sizes and central densities in dwarfs, low-surface-brightness galaxies and clusters This is a simulation benchmark, not a universal measurement or detection.
1 cm² g⁻¹ The same study produced cores that were too low-density for some clusters, low-surface-brightness galaxies and dwarf spheroidals A large, velocity-independent interaction can overcorrect the inner profile.

These values are not interchangeable “allowed ranges.” A result may be a preferred scale in one simulation, an upper limit from a cluster sample or a bound that depends on how an observable is inferred. The velocity distribution of the tested halos and the assumed baryonic physics must accompany every quoted number.

Why dwarf and low-surface-brightness galaxies motivate SIDM

Rotation curves and stellar motions in some dwarf and low-surface-brightness galaxies have been interpreted as evidence for cores: central regions where density changes slowly with radius rather than rising steeply toward the centre. SIDM naturally creates such cores through self-scattering, providing a physical mechanism rather than requiring each halo to receive a separately tuned modification.

The case is not decisive because the same data can be affected by ordinary astrophysics. Supernova-driven gas outflows can repeatedly change the gravitational potential and push dark matter outward. Gas inflows, the stellar mass-to-light ratio, molecular-cloud heating and non-circular gas motions can also alter a fitted rotation curve. Different halo profiles can fit the same sparse or noisy kinematic measurements, especially when the stellar distribution is uncertain.

Simulations therefore compare SIDM and CDM using matched galaxy-formation models, not idealized dark-matter-only halos. Moderate interactions can lower central densities while retaining realistic halo masses and substructure. Stronger interactions can make dwarf spheroidals or low-surface-brightness systems too diffuse. The observational question is not simply “is a core present?” but whether one interaction model reproduces the distribution of core sizes, densities and halo-to-halo diversity after baryonic effects are included.

Does the Bullet Cluster rule out self-interacting dark matter?

No. The Bullet Cluster provides an important constraint, but it does not eliminate SIDM as a class. In a high-speed merger, self-scattering could transfer momentum between the dark-matter components, causing dark matter to lag behind collisionless galaxies or be stripped from the subcluster. The observed separation between galaxies, hot X-ray gas and gravitational-lensing mass can therefore limit the interaction rate.

The numerical bound is sensitive to how each component’s position is defined. Robertson and collaborators emphasized that “the way in which the positions of the various components are measured can have a larger impact on derived constraints.” Their observationally matched hydrodynamical simulations found that simplistic treatments can produce overly strong limits. Gas physics, viewing angle, merger stage, halo concentration and the distinction between a density peak and a lensing centroid all matter.

A single merger also samples a narrow range of collision velocities and an unusual geometry. New merger simulations argue for testing a population of clusters, groups and galaxies with different velocities. That approach can distinguish a constant cross-section from a velocity-dependent interaction instead of treating one famous system as a universal laboratory.

What halo shapes and weak lensing can tell us

Self-scattering tends to make the inner halo rounder by erasing some of the anisotropic orbital structure that supports a triaxial shape. This sounds like a clean test, but observations usually measure a projected two-dimensional shape. Projection combines the line-of-sight orientation, the three-dimensional halo, outer triaxial material and the distribution of luminous matter.

A 2013 analysis revised an earlier approximately 0.02 cm² g⁻¹ shape limit upward and found that at least 0.1 cm² g⁻¹ could be allowed under improved modeling. This illustrates why a shape constraint is conditional on halo dynamics, radius and the assumed mapping between a measured projection and the inner dark-matter distribution.

Fischer and collaborators’ 2023 mock weak-lensing study reached a related conclusion at cluster scales: “The distributions of weak-lensing-inferred cluster shapes are almost indistinguishable.” SIDM and CDM halos in the simulations had different three-dimensional structures, yet projection and lensing noise made their inferred shape distributions nearly overlap. Weak-lensing shape catalogs alone are therefore unlikely to provide a decisive detection; combining them with internal kinematics or density information is more informative.

Cluster density profiles set an upper-scale test

Clusters are valuable because their deep potentials, high characteristic velocities and well-measured central mass profiles probe a regime far above dwarf galaxies. If scattering is too strong and independent of velocity, it can flatten cluster centres more than observations permit. The Particle Data Group review summarizes a preference for σ/m less than or approximately equal to 0.1 cm² g⁻¹ from cluster central densities.

X-COP analyses combine observed cluster density profiles with BAHAMAS-SIDM hydrodynamical simulations to tighten this type of constraint. Such comparisons must account for gas pressure, stellar mass, the assumed hydrostatic equilibrium and the radial range being fitted. A limit from a cluster core does not automatically apply to a dwarf halo if the microscopic interaction weakens at high relative velocity.

Bullet-dwarf systems offer a different probe

Small, high-velocity collisions involving dwarf galaxies could leave a trail of systems that are deficient in dark matter. In this scenario, self-scattering separates dark matter from stars and gas, potentially producing a remnant whose stellar component survives with little associated halo material. These objects would complement cluster mergers because they probe lower masses and different collision histories.

A 2022 Nature study searched IllustrisTNG progenitors for candidate head-on, high-velocity collisions. It reported 248 collisions in a simulated volume of 1003 Mpc3, with about eight occurring within 20 Mpc in that analysis. Those counts describe identified candidates in a simulation, not an observed population and not a confirmed SIDM signal.

Interpreting a candidate requires reconstructing the progenitor halos, impact parameter, relative velocity, viewing angle and baryonic history. Tidal stripping, feedback and an initially low dark-matter fraction can imitate some of the same signatures. A statistically useful test will need a well-defined selection function and a matched set of CDM and SIDM predictions.

Why velocity dependence may be essential

Dwarf galaxies have characteristic dark-matter velocities of tens of kilometres per second, whereas clusters reach thousands of kilometres per second. A constant σ/m that produces sizable dwarf cores may over-flatten cluster centres or create too much merger drag. This tension motivates interactions whose cross-section falls as velocity rises.

Particle models with a light mediator can generate resonant or smoothly varying scattering. They may allow strong effects in dwarfs, weaker scattering in groups and clusters, and acceptable merger offsets. The exact velocity curve matters more than quoting one cross-section at an unspecified speed. Multi-scale observations are required to determine whether the same curve fits dwarf rotation curves, galaxy shapes, group density profiles and cluster mergers.

The major sources of uncertainty

Baryonic degeneracy

Feedback, gas redistribution and stellar structure can produce cores or alter cusps without any dark-matter self-interaction. SIDM analyses must evolve baryons and dark matter together, propagate uncertainty in stellar mass and test whether the inferred interaction survives alternative feedback prescriptions.

Projection and lensing systematics

Projected shapes and lensing maps compress three-dimensional information into a two-dimensional observable. Triaxiality, line-of-sight structure, source-galaxy redshift errors and lens-model choices can shift the inferred halo shape or density. A nearly identical projected distribution does not prove identical three-dimensional halos.

Tracer and dynamical assumptions

Rotation curves depend on gas motions and the adopted geometry. Stellar-dispersion studies depend on the tracer population, anisotropy and equilibrium assumptions. Cluster masses may rely on hydrostatic equilibrium, which can fail when non-thermal pressure is important. These effects can move a quoted cross-section limit without any change in the underlying physics.

Gravothermal core collapse

A core produced by SIDM is not necessarily permanent. Continued heat conduction can eventually make the centre contract, especially in old, dense halos or models with strong scattering. The onset time depends on halo assembly, concentration, cross-section velocity dependence and baryons. Predicting when collapse occurs is an active modeling problem, not a universal clock that can be applied to every halo.

Unknown particle identity

Astrophysical observations primarily constrain a scattering rate and its dependence on relative velocity. They do not uniquely determine the dark-matter mass, mediator mass or hidden-sector composition. Several microscopic theories can produce similar halo-scale behavior, so an astrophysical preference for SIDM would not by itself identify a particle model.

How to judge a claimed SIDM result

When reading a new constraint or claimed detection, check five items before comparing it with another paper:

  • Interaction definition: Is the result stated as a cross-section per mass, and at what relative velocity?
  • Halo scale: Does it concern a dwarf, ordinary galaxy, group or cluster?
  • Observable: Is the evidence a rotation curve, lensing shape, X-ray density profile, merger offset or dark-matter-deficient remnant?
  • Astrophysical modeling: Are baryons, projection, non-circular motions and selection effects simulated or marginalized?
  • Statistical status: Is the result a detection, a preference, a consistency statement or an upper limit?

A dwarf-core fit and a cluster upper bound are not contradictory until they are evaluated at the same velocity and under comparable assumptions. Conversely, agreement between two analyses using the same tracer and systematics is weaker than agreement across independent observables.

What would count as decisive progress?

The strongest future case would be a single velocity-dependent interaction that predicts the diversity of dwarf cores, preserves galaxy and cluster populations, satisfies merger-offset limits, reproduces cluster density profiles and makes testable predictions for bullet-dwarf remnants. It would also need to remain preferred when feedback, stellar masses, projection and dynamical assumptions are varied.

That standard is demanding because no current observation isolates self-scattering from all astrophysical alternatives. The most informative strategy is a joint, baryon-inclusive analysis spanning dwarf, galaxy, group and cluster velocities, rather than a tighter limit from one system alone.
